Why is it that (in the UK anyway) records used in TV programmes are never credited whilst music composed for the programme is. It seems to be different for films where the soundtrack is often more important (and better) than the film.

Incidentally I caught a snippet of Painting Box by The Incredible String Band during a programme last night about the TV Chef Keith Floyd (it was during some archive footage of the sixties and was seting the scene). It wasn't credited at the end, though.

Damned annoying isn't it? It has to do with terms of copyright. In most cases of recorded music used in this way, there is no legal obligation to say who the recording is by, so long as the royalties are paid. In some cases, where people have specifically stipulated, the recording can only be used by permission, then the music is credited. I thinks that's right, I'm sure someone will tell me if I'm wrong.
