I'm having a problem with Yahoo e mail and IM. It's been going on for months and I'm sick of it. Suddenly it just locks up and I get a message, that it is temporary, but it never is. Now, I got a notice that my Instant messenger desktop icon will no longer work. Well, that aint all, the whole IM program is gone. I've complained over and over to no avail, so I have a question. How do I switch e mail servers without laboriously letting everyone in my address book know? Is there a way to send one message to all? google G mail is one option.

Also, I keep getting this anti spam thing that shows very cryptic combinations of letters and numbers that I have to type into a box before the e mail will be sent. They are so hard to read I often have to try 3 or 4 times to send it. They say is is to prevent spam, but I still get spam!

Kendall, you could try looking here.

As I said I have no personal experience with these producta, but the search revealed others have had too - maybe some of them may have some solutions, or at least explanations.

You could always try asking a more specific Yahoo Question, too.

I have similar problems with my old email account which I will dump at some point. I am also using gmail in a limited sense. If I understand it right, gmail will copy your old address book and automatically notify everyone in there.

PM Jeri for more details as she also uses gmail - Tom

Sounds like you have a real problem Kendall. Sorry I can't be of any help.

GMAIL is a great choice. I have tried quite a few different email programs and GMAIL is the best one of the bunch. GMAIL has caught three   email containing a virus. Also like the way they handle spam ~ you never have to look at the stuff.

You can also get an iGoogle page and customize it to suit your needs. It helps me keep on track with appointments etc.

Tom, I don't know anything about the address-copying feature.

G mail does offer a way to switch my Yahoo contacts, but it looks like it doesn't work for Vista. Another reason to hate Vista.

Switching to a new email address can be a pain, but it doesn't have to be. To get personalized help on how to switch to Gmail, enter the domain for the email address you no longer want to use, and click "Help Me Switch". Or view general instructions on switching from any email address. Change is good. It can be easy too.

Switch from...
your_username @

e.g. yahoo.com, hotmail.com

What I did was to print out all my e mail contacts , so when I get an e mail on Yahoo, I will just answer on G mail and request that the recipient switch.

kendall,

sometimes that sort of low level non-technical approach is just the simplest and easiest - as long as you keep both accts running for a while.

Actually, it can be a very good idea to have a 'backup acct' - one of my friends found that her ISP just 'lost' her original email acct - when they transferred to another reseller - she never got it back, or the important stuff stored there.

Yes, that's to prevent THEM from getting SPAM, not you!
(Automatically generated mails do not get through)

Yahoo has a "new" version over the last year that never worked well for me, it kept hanging, so I switched back to the old version. I'm not sure which version I'm using now, but it seems to work better. Maybe everyone else got moved over--maybe you were a late adopter--so late they left you and your connections behind?

I have too many email accounts, an accretion over the years. I've been looking for a good way to check several at once. There is software to do it, but I haven't downloaded one yet.

The only thing about g mail that I don't like is, no desk top icon. I asked them but no response.
