lark in the clear air is gorgeous but a bit beyond my vocal talents. Was thinking possibly of song for ireland by Dick Gaughan but will check out the contemplator site!

'Song for Ireland' was written by Scottish-born Phil Colclough, not Dick Gaughan. Mary Black has also recorded it.

Another of Phil's songs is 'The Call and the Answer'... De Dannan's version is excellent.

Depends if you want the audience joining or a nice lilting Ballad. Fields of Athenry Suits a female voice well. The Rose Of Tralee too is ideal. An Old Maid In THe Garret, very suitable too. 4 I'll be doing on our Club's St Pat's party are probably the best singalongs, The Irish Rover, Fields Of Athenry, The Wild Rover and Dublin In The Rare Auld Times.Have a good one. Oh and one I've just learnt an old Rebel song by Maureen Hegarty, The Dying Rebel, actually a song from a Mother's point of view and little performed these days, lyrics and chords on www.unitedirelandtripod.ie Good luck

'I'll Tell Me Ma' - great as a song and as a session tune, too... then there's Stanley Accrington's 'update' on the story, 'Belfast City'.

'Muirsheen Durkin'... another with a good session tune.

Irish songs? The ears perk up...
Of course, it depends on where you're singing. I never had much luck singing at instrumental sessions -- they never knew what to do with a vocalist, especially if she wasn't someone's girlfriend.
If you think people are really going to stop playing and listen, try "If I Was a Blackbird" or "Galway Shawl". "Fanny Power" (aside from being a terrific feminist slogan!) is a nice tune, and there are decent English lyrics recorded by the trio Cailleach.

The session I'm singing at is run by band called " no frills" and they play celtic, bluegrass and gypsy/klezmer on an assortment of instruments and sing a little bit. I went to one of their open sessions ( they also do gigs) last week and had a blast! Its funny the whole etiquestte turning up to a session and trying to sing...much easier when its an english folk club and you just put your name on the list at the door! I mentioned to what looked like the head musician in the group that I'd like to sing and then never got asked so just before I was about to leave I said rather loudly in a brief lull " can I sing a song?" which sounded a bit pushy, but hey ho, it seemed to go down ok!! I agree the whole vibe with instrumental sessions is very different!

The no frills band are playing at the grosvenor arms in Stockwell ( London) on St Paddys night and they are great if you're around!
