Shall All Be Reunited

We shall all be reunited in that land beyond the skies
Where there'll be no separation, no more parting, no more sighs.

Also a Doc Watson song. A mountain classic.

I would like the Karnes version as well.

Google is coming up empty with or without quotations. I tried sheet music, but no luck. I expect it will be in one of the library collections. It was released in 1927.

I haven't played this since the 80s:

WE SHALL ALL BE REUNITED
(Alfred Karnes)

Where is now my father's family
They were here so long ago
Seated round the old home fireside
Brightened by the ruddied glow.

CHORUS
We shall all be reunited
In that land beyond the sky
Where there'll be no separations
No more partings, no more sighs.

Some have gone to lands far distant
And with others made their home
Some upon the earth have wandered
All their lives have chose to roam.

Some have gone from us forever
For with us they could not stay
They have all dispersed and wandered
Gone away, so far away.

We shall meet beyond the river
In that land of pure delight
Without sickness or our sorrows
We'll have joys ever bright.

12-stringer, can you verify that the song was written by Alfred Karnes? I'm aware that Karnes recorded the song during the famous 1927 "Bristol Sessions." Did you post them from memory, or from another source?
I added the title and songwriter name in Digital Tradition format.

Gary Dodee also posted these words at his website, but no composer or information included.

Tune? The lyrics fit a couple of old tunes.

Reminded me of the old hymn "Shall We Meet?," but it is unrelated.

Shall we meet beyond the river,
Where the surges cease to roll;
Where in all the bright forever,
Sorrow ne'er shall press the soul?
etc.

Also Atkinson's "We Shall Meet By and By," also unrelated.
(from the Otterbein variant, not the original)

We shall meet beyond the river, By and by, by and by,
And the darkness will be over, By and by, by and by.
With the toilsome journey done,
And the glorious battle won,
We shall shine forth as the sun, By and by, by and by.
etc.

Joe,

I read on a site that it was indeed written by Karnes. I will go seek verification.

Alfred G. Karnes- Listed as traditional in the cd Country Gospel vol. 2, 1929-1946. Issued by Fremeaux & Assoc.

Also included as track 16, Karnes 1927, with three more tracks by Karnes, in "The Music of Kentucky- Early American Rural Classics 1927-1937, vol. 1-2." Much from the Bristol sessions (Lomax). Yazoo 2-cd.

Probably a traditional gospel tune, but revised by Karnes. But "ain't proof."
I still haven't found anything on the Doc Watson recording.

Does anyone have the Yazoo set? Sounds like it is worth having.

Included on the Doc Watson and Son cd, where the composer is listed as B. Bateman.
The Freighthoppers list it as traditional.

No further data at allmusic.com except more renditions.

Alfred is da man. Heard a black Baptist preacher do Never Grow Old... fascinating to hear the song done in a completely different style.

Yazoo 2013 'Music of Kentucky Vol I', mentioned above by Q, has no information about its provenance, nor has the Document 'Kentucky Gospel' album. Surprisingly, Meade has no entry for this song even though 8 of Karnes' recordings have entries. Of the 8 Karnes recordings referenced, none has compositional attributions to Karnes except 'Days of my childhood plays' which Meade suggests may 'possibly' have been composed by him. Tony Russell gives no composer information in his short piece titled 'The Recordings of A.G. Karnes' in 'Old Time Music #7', but he does mention an extensive article on Karnes by Donald Lee Nelson in JEMF Quarterly Vol VIII, No 25, Spring 1972. Does anyone have access to this?

JEMF (John Edwards Memorial Foundation) is held in partial runs by some 40 libraries, the first issues mimeographed; not the easiest journal to find.
The information may be in a book by Nolan Porterfield, "Exploring Roots Music," surveying the 20 years of publication. Karnes, a sometime Baptist preacher and gospel singer, is covered in the book according to some notes found on Google.
The book was published by Scarecrow Press for $37.50; Amazon.com and others have or can locate copies.

Ah, Alfred G. - No one quite like him!

Thanks to being introduced to his work by Stewie, his recordings became firm favourites of mine and of my late husband (who also used to sing Mr Karnes' songs wonderfully well :)

Thanks for the memories!
Cheers,

Hymnary.org confirms that WE SHALL ALL BE REUNITED was indeed written by N. S. Sitzlar; furthermore, it was published in Evangel Light, edited by G. M. Bateman (Knoxville: Bateman Bros., 1920), as hymn #160. I could not find the original text, but I listened to Karnes’ recording, and I have marked corrections to 12-stringer’s version below:

WE SHALL ALL BE REUNITED
As recorded by Alfred Karnes, 1928.

1. Where is now my father's fam’ly
That was here so long ago,
Sitting round the kitchen fireside,
Brightened by the ruddied glow?

CHORUS: We shall all be reunited
In that land beyond the skies,
Where there'll be no separation,
No more parting, no more sighs.

2. Some have gone to lands far distant
And with others made their home.
Some upon the world of waters
All their lives have chose to roam. CHORUS

3. Some have gone from us forever,
For with us they could not stay.
They have all dispersed and wandered,
Gone away, so far away. CHORUS

4. We shall meet beyond the river
In that land of pure delight,
Where no sickness or no sorrow
Will our joys ever blight. CHORUS TWICE

[This has also been recorded by Patty Griffin, Doc Watson, and several others. I suspect 12-stringer got his version from Doc Watson.]

I can tell you from certainty the song "We Shall All Be Reunited" WAS NOT written by Alfred Karnes. Alfred Karnes was the 1st to record it. The Song was written by my Grandfather Newton S Sitzlar. I have posted this several times on YouTube. As far as I know, my grandfather never had the song copyrighted. My mom, aunts and uncles are all deceased now. But we who remain, know who really wrote the song. My grandfather among other things taught music. and when the song was published he used shaped notes (not round notes that are now used). There are many who have sung the song and posted it on YouTube. I appreciate all that have done so, because my grandfathers music lives on.

It won't be the first or last time a recording company messes up the credits.
