Jon Loomes is one of the growing number of young singers and musicians that have begun making a name for themselves on the folk scene in the past few years. His repertoire is traditional, with a few self-composed tunes thrown in for good measure, and accompanied on a range of instruments including the guitar (he has been favourably compared with Nic Jones), fiddle, melodeon, English concertina, cittern and hurdy-gurdy.

Admission £9.00 - Members £8.00
Commences 8.00pm

Litle as I like to agree with Froots, Loomes is great, his sense of humour deadly at times - and when he has "and friends" on to play as well they are usually damned good too..

I strongly recommend this gig.

I remember Jon Loomes from a few years ago as a regular Catter, though I haven't seen him active here in a while.

On the strength of his posts, and I think it was links to a couple of soundclips, I sought out his Fellside CD, and it's very nice. I'd like to hear, and meet, him in person.

(But I'll have to miss this particular gig, being reident on the US side).

I believe he's also recently formed a hurdy-gurdy duo with Anna Elliott which rejoices under the name of Mediaeval Knieval. I wish I'd thought of that name first!

My husband thinks he used to be in a band called Whorticulture. Is that true? We saw them a lot in Cambridge a few years ago, and they were very good.

I have never been sure why Whorticulture did not become a "must have" band. My suspicion was that it was because what they did was too English. Others have told me they disliked they way the band joked around on stage and amused each other with "in" jokes.

Jon's moved on but what he's doing taking gigs in snooty Surrey is a bit incomprehensible.
Though I suppose a gig's a gig.
The sooner he gets back to Islington + or - Paul Scourfield the better.

Well, back in the 1970s, the Communist Party in Surrey was controlled by a Stalinist shit and I find it difficult to believe that anything wholesome could ever emanate from the county (Lawrence Heath excepted).

Jon's 'Fearful Symmetry' is a marvellous album. I love the hugeness of his voice. It's two years old now... 'bout time for something new?

Coincidently, Paul Scourfield's 'Freshly Squeezed' arrived in the post yesterday (I'd followed the link from Anahata's website to find him) and on first hearing it's most enjoyable, with lots of great contributions from Jon.

I'd also be intrigued to hear Jon's hurdy-gurdy project with the inestimable Philip G Martin. How many pies has Mr Loomes got his fingers in?

Anyone who thinks the current UK folk scene is knackered must have cloth ears. There's so much good stuff about. Yippee!

Well done guest, I searched hard for that yesterday but couldn't find it so I thought it must be defunct. Brings back good memories.
