Subject: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Mar 14 - 02:35 PM This Saturday, March 15, 2014, is our monthly Press Room Shanty, Forebitter, and Ballad Sing, from 3:30 until 7:30. The location is, of course, The Press Room on Daniel Street, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. I'm hoping the winter won't throw us another curve as it has in January and February. AccuWeather says the day will be cloudy with perhaps a rain shower, but with the temperature in the 40s (F). I'm looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible! The past two months' turnout, despite the snow and hideous driving conditions, has been quite remarkable. I'm still quite overwhelmed with the turnout at Tom's memorial gathering on March 1st -- and the show of respect, appreciation, and love from our many friends is amazing. I'm just sorry I couldn't get to talk to everyone there. Linn Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 12 Mar 14 - 02:38 PM I know it's smack in the middle of St. Patrick's season, but I'm hoping not everyone has a gig on Saturday. Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 12 Mar 14 - 08:34 PM Linn- I'll be there for sure but Judy is still trying to shake her chest congestion. Charlie |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 13 Mar 14 - 12:24 PM Hope today's snow (and yesterday's rain / sleet / freezing rain) is getting it out of the weather's system. Hoping for fair weather on Saturday. MY system need some good singing... Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 14 Mar 14 - 11:02 PM Fear not! It's going to be a fine, soft day. Don |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Mar 14 - 10:38 AM Don, I got Tristan and Bruce Pingree together last night and asked if it would be okay to have the August sea music sing on the SECOND Saturday of the month -- I'll have to remind them again in July or so, but it's fine with them. Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Guest Dianne Date: 15 Mar 14 - 11:51 AM I am running "Grammy's homework bootcamp" today, but hope to be done in time to join you all. Can't postpone bootcamp to tomorrow 'cause I've got another funeral. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Jeri Date: 15 Mar 14 - 09:48 PM She made it. It's been so long, I could hardly remember songs I knew. Including both which ones AND how they went. Dianne asked me to do "Blackbird", and I remembered I knew it. Duh. Must learn some new songs. It was a good session, although a bit sparse and a bit more silly. A bit more diversion from "sea" music than usual. (I guess them're the "forebitters". (better than aft-biters) A guy who hadn't been there before sang ...was it "Mother Machree"? What a lovely voice he has. What I consumed up until just a few minutes ago: English muffin, peanut butter M&Ms and a big G&T. If I was goofier than usual, it was probably because of the M&Ms. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 15 Mar 14 - 10:06 PM Good session! Smaller than usual because a lot of regulars have St. Patrick's season gigs. The gentleman with the lovely voice just moved to town and had been told about the weekly sessions, but came across today's rather by fortuitous accident. Thanks to modern technology we were also able to satisfy some tourists' demands for Irish songs. More tomorrow. I'm trying to peck this out with a purring cat on my chest... Linn |

Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 17 Mar 14 - 01:22 PM Well, I just got all the way to within 3 songs of the end and my browser quit on me. Sigh. So here I go again. The errands got accomplished, though...car now runs better and without stuttering (dry gas and new tank of high test), Freecycled vacuum cleaner picked up, Chinese take-out picked up and, now, posting this a second time, it's eaten as well. 38. Clear Away the Morning (Gordon Bok) - Dianne 39. Farewell to Tarwaithie - Don 40. Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Mar 14 - 09:23 AM Does anyone read these session wrap ups? Just curious... Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: SINSULL Date: 18 Mar 14 - 09:33 AM Actually I do. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Guest-Dianne Date: 18 Mar 14 - 09:53 AM Me too! If it is too much to keep up with though, just let it go. For anyone else out there that is reading this you should know that Linn has CD's of Tom singing and playing. For those who haven't heard his voice in years or, perhaps never heard it, get it. On Sunday I had to drive to Worcester on family business and it was so delightful to have Tom keeping me company. A gem of a CD and great to learn from as Tom's diction is crisp and clear. No muddy lyrics here. Dianne |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Sailor Ron Date: 18 Mar 14 - 12:28 PM I for one read it month by month, and how I'd love to be with you, unfortunatly I'm here in England and you're in New England |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: ChanteyLass Date: 18 Mar 14 - 03:37 PM I read them! |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: GUEST,Don Hale Date: 18 Mar 14 - 06:32 PM Of course I do, Linn! If you would like a copy (Word Document) of a list from the last year or so, I have them. Dianne is right! The CD is wonderful, a new reference collection for me. I had never REALLY heard Tom sing until the memorial at the Press Room. Don |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Mar 14 - 07:38 PM I recorded the sea music sessions up until Tom lost his voice (and I rather lost heart recording them -- right around the same time Barry Finn died, as well). I transcribed what was sung (and discussed) onto the j-cards, which are digitized. (The j-cards, not the tapes, alas.) I was recording mostly so I could hear myself and improve my delivery and because I liked to keep track of what was sung. And I tried to point out to Tom that his voice was getting quieter, but he didn't pay any attention. Since I stopped recording I write down what's been sung and then post them here. Not a problem and I WILL continue doing it. (But I also should start bringing the digital recorder and recording, too.) I was just curious as to whom it mattered. For the past year or so I've been keeping a record (for my own use) of what I sing at the Friday sessions. Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Bat Goddess Date: 18 Mar 14 - 08:32 PM Sailor Ron, we'd love to have you join us someday. There's quite a list of Mudcatters from your side of the Atlantic coming to our weekly session or the monthly sea music sing. Micca, of course, has been here many times. John MacKenzie, Carole Etherton and Andrew McKay,...plus non-Mudcatters Mike and Diane Dibble, Roy and Mary Clinging, Andy Kenna... Plus others I've neglected to mention because my brain is still chewed up from losing Tom. (I truly hope I've put my brain and vocabulary in a safe place so I can someday retrieve them.) I'm just about ready to submit my passport application ...primarily to visit Canadian friends (to be fair, canada does not require a passport...but I'll need one to come back home!) but who knows what might happen if I can scrape together some travel money. Linn |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: maeve Date: 18 Mar 14 - 09:45 PM Linn- I seldom post these days, and I've never been able to join the Sessions , but I read every word. |
Subject: RE: March Press Room (NH) Shanty Sing From: Charley Noble Date: 18 Mar 14 - 10:33 PM Actually I posted the other day, in between the song lists, and I guess it didn't take. It was especially nice to see some less familiar singers join the session, Nicole and Dave. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |
