Subject: Singer's Circle at Swan's
From: Dave Swan
Date: 09 Dec 99 - 12:10 AM

Monday last 'seed banged on the door bearing beer, a huge platter of fresh veggies, his banjo, travel guitar (big sound, little frame), about a gross of harmonicas, and our friend Joy. The first of the folks arriving to swap songs, we took a minute to celebrate 'seed's new position with Starboard Watch, a local seafaring band. Some folks drove 90 minutes to be there, others ten. In the end a dozen folks showed up, one of whom we'd never met (he heard about it from a friend of ours), another a visitor from Toronto who knows Rick! Everyone lead songs, everyone sang along, many people played at one time or another. Instruments included a hammered dulcimer, whistles, guitars, banjos, fiddles, an accordion, and a mandolin. It was singer's choice, we heard from a huge variety of traditions, styles, and periods. Of course it isn't a successful party unless the cops know about it, and we had a call from the music police at about 9:00. Officer Patterson called to investigate reports of Mr. Kratz performing unnatural acts with a banjo. I wish all of you could have been there for 'seed's ventures into Flanders and Swann, he's a master. This was the first singer's circle we had hosted and long before things broke up about 11:00, we decided to do it again. Now we know why annap is so enthusiastic about the get-togethers she holds. What a priviledge to have that much talent and kindness in one's home. Y'all come to the next one.

Do one on the first Monday in January, and I'll come (assuming I have any voice left after Harmony). I'll be in the Bay area for a few days from Jan 2 thru probably 5, 6. Before that I'll be at the SFFMC NYs campout at Boulder Creek. YOu all going to make any of that?
Blessings,
Barbara

"Position with the Starboard Watch"? That may be putting it a bit strongly: For all I know they may have told me to come back wearing black so they could notify the police that there was a six foot six ninja stalking them). We'll see tomorrow night--if I can get enough sleep to have the energy to go. I've got to force myself away from the Mac...NOW. (well, maybe in ten more minutes...)

BTW, Dave. I hope you're feeling better than you look in the pictures I just had processed. I'll try to get some shots to bbc via email in the next day or so--and to you and Pam, Dave--or maybe I'll let you forward the pix to bbc with names of possible mudcat connections). Thanks again for a fantastic time (and it would indeed be a blessing if we could put one together for Barbara).

Or send me a mudcat message.

The silver swan, who living had no note
When death approached unlocked her silent throat
Leaning her breast against the reedy shore,
Thus sang her first and last and sang, no more.
Farewell all charms; O death come close my eyes,
Thus sing more geese than swans,
Thus live more fools than wise.

Speaking of swan songs, Anyone else sing that madrigal? Has gorgeous harmonies.
Think the words are right, it's been a while.
Blessings,
Barbara

I've seen the lyric, but don't recall having heard it, but speaking of madrigals, at one point in the Swong Circle, someone (Steve) started singing corny old traditional mountain songs madrigal style and the harmonies soared: for some reason, even though I've never been part of a madrigal chorus, I find madrigal style harmonies much easier than mountain harmonies, pop harmonies, etc. Just one more note about the session: a fiddler/singer whose name I didn't catch turns out to be Shelly--according to Dave, an old friend of our merry rickster, Fielding. Talk about six degrees of seperation, small world, and all such stuff, sometimes it really is true. She'll be among the pictures I post of Swong Circle #1.

Say folks, are we on for tomorrow or not? I'm typing from a friend's computer in Berkeley, now that I am back from Camp Harmony. I can't do personal messages, but reach me here on this thread. I'm going to see if I can reset my cookie and read my messages. If not, I'll tell you how to reach me here.
Happy New Millennium all,
Blessings,
Barbara

So Dave. We were at Shelly's New Year's party and she's RAVING about you. Are you some kind of hunk or something? I'm currently trying to fix her Mandolin peg.

Rick

Negative hunkage here, sir. I did, however, bring a pretty nice bottle of single malt to dinner. Chicks dig a guy with a fancy cork. E.S.

Wal, shoot, Dave, I was so looking forward to checking out your fancy cork. I thought I'd be seeing you last night. What happened? I can also do private messages (I reset my cookie) if what happened is too embarrassing to post in public.
Blessings,
Barbara
I left you a private message as well.

FROM PJ WHO CAN'T RESET HER COOKIE

Rick,

I sang with Shelley many times while she was on sabbatical here in SunnyCaliforniland, but never once did I realize her mandolin was named Peg...

Give her a big, wet, sloppy kiss from me and tell her we missed her at New Year's Day song circle, but I'll see her at Winter Weekend next month. HEY!! WHY DON'T YOU COME WITH HER????

grins n' hugs

PJ

Is this why we sometimes call "singaround" "sinaground"?

Read it carefully.

Singaround is the universal name in England.

Traditionally, the Anglii are blond, (non Anglii sed Angeli)
