On rare ocassions I get an e mail attachment, and it won't open. I get a notice that says"

This filedoes not have a program accociated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the folder options control panel.

Can someone translate that into English?

It means that, whoever sent it to you, created the attachment with a program that your computer doesn't have. For example, if the filename ends with .wst, it is a Wordstar text file, but your computer can't open it if you don't have that program.

The file extension is how windows knows what to do with it. The file extension is what's associated with a program. For instance, if it's 'file.jpg', your picture-viewing program opens it. If it's 'file.wav', your sound-playing program opens it. If there's no extension, I could tell you how to add one, but it's easier if you just let your Mac-using friends know you need an extension. Macs don't need them.

Sometimes I download pictures, to find I can't open them. There is a textbox with a cross in it. Anyone know how to deal with this please?

Assuming you're using Windows, strictly speaking it's not that your computer necessarily doesn't have the program to open the file, just that Windows doesn't know which program to use to open the file by default.

If the file has an extension, you can save it do disk then right-click on the file and select Open With... and pick the program to use to open it (at which time you get the option to permanently associate the program with files of this type - Always use the selected program to open file of this type).

If it doesn't have an extension you can save it and then rename it with the extension it needs, or you can leave it without and extension and if you double-click the file it will ask you which program to use to open it.

I presume you downloaded and installed the Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system and am thinking that perhaps you have to save the attachment to a folder and try to open it from there.

A computer has to be told which program to use to open what. Most emailed pictured are in a format called JPEG or JPG, some are in another format called GIF, and some, fewer still, are in a format called TIFF. If you haven't mapped an application to these file types your computer will balk at opening them. There are also a few more obscure and less often used image types which can make the computer choke. Some require proprietary programs to open. For example, Phtoshop saves files in a formats it likes to be the only one to open.

Miscro-Soft has always had a "backward compatable," problem 96,98,2000,NT/XT.....(it helps push compnay product) for "real people" save all your "good stuff" in ansi-TEXT.....even use ansi for your signitures.

I.E. If you have purchased the newest MSOffice-Suite with VISTA - you can read ANYTHING......HOWEVEROTHERS many may not be able to read your attachment with a

WPS

encoding. Some scrambling and downloading on their side and they can engineer a work-around.

One beauty of the DT is ----- fifteen years later it still works.

This doesn't happen very often, and in this case it's just a spread sheet that I can't open and don't really give a damn about, so I may just say screw it.It's late, and I've had it.

Have them: 1. Highlight text 2. Copy text 3. Paste Text into you persaonal Mail Message.
