TV programme on (among other things) Yorkshire Christmas carols, featuring Kate Rusby, which aired earlier today*. I taped it but haven't had a chance to see it yet. Anyone watching? Any feedback?

I totally agree - I'd have missed it too, except for my eagle-eyed partner who actually READS all the morning stuff listed in small print at the top of the page. He pointed it out just as it was about to air, so I barely had time to jam a tape into the machine & set it running. Otherwise I'd have posted a heads-up. :-(

......caught the last few minutes accidentally.

KR & Lesley Garrett singing a duet/harmony? of some modern Xmas arrangement.

KR seemed dubious of LG's harmonies & kept giving her funny looks.

Can't IMAGINE what the voice blend must have sounded like! Were there ever two more dissimilar singers?

Caught the last carol. I thought it just didn't really work. Some strange harmonies. Chiming Chrsitmas Bells needs lots of voices, lots of harmonies and, if you are going to have a brass section, one that gives it wellie. The musicains looked as if they were having to play 'politley'.
Merry Christmas

Very disappointed, me. A strange variant of the tune and arrangement of Sweet Chiming Bells which owed nothing much to the tradition they were talking about. I'm not sure that we have French horns in Yorkshire Brass Bands, do we?

I thought it sounded great. Kate seemed out of her comfort zone with LG's harmonies but I thought it sounded wonderful. an almost mathematically precise harmony. better than the gang at Fagan's.

Kate appeared to be very nervous in 'Sweet Chiming Bells', but it was a brave attempts and came off OK, IMHO.

The programme's on at the same time every week Jim. Why expect it to be on at a different time just because Kate was appearing? Don't make no sense guvnah!

I downloaded via BBC iplayer, and the lady was quite wonderful. L Garrett was really hideous and almost Bruce Forsyth like.

Finally got to see it, last night by the fireside with the Christmas Eve hot port, after the carols from King's finished. Kate only appeared once earlier in the show, where Lesley chatted with her for a minute and then she sang (can't remember its exact title) a song about servant girls being given only one day off in the whole year, that being Christmas. She was accompanied by some sensitive button accordion playing - don't know his name but he got it exactly right - and it was a lovely number, but the mics were balanced wrong and you couldn't hear the vocal clearly enough. Her line should have been front and center but was mixed too far back.

I think this was probably the cause of Kate's later apparent discomfort, that with someone singing harmony as well as brass and accordion in the background, she just couldn't hear properly. I noticed one (and only one) small slip in intonation, and from the look on Kate's face I think she noticed it too. But then, Lesley went out of tune (also only once) much more dramatically when she tried a high harmony and shouldn't have. Overall, I thought the duet worked amazingly well. Lesley resisted the impulse to blast everyone else off stage with sheer volume, as opera singers can and too often do, and she matched her tone to Kate's quite nicely, with only a few swan dives into her "classical" sound (and it would have been better without). Sweet Chiming Bells is a stunning song, and I thought the ensemble accompaniment was beautifully played - always loved the combination of reeds and brass (plus harp!). I had expected the worst so I was pleasantly surprised.

OK, hands up - how many of you who "only caught the last bit" of this show were REALLY tuning in to watch "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" ?! ;-) (Go on, admit it...) Great film, that -

My best wishes to everyone for the holiday season

But now the problem is 2 fold - hacking the BBC 7 day self delete programme on the iplayer download (not easy), and splitting the wmv file (probably easy)

Anyone out there got any Kate Rusby TV appearances on VHS or DVD....? I can convert to DVD, it might be nice to compile her TV appearances and someone out there must have them on tape - Mercury Music Prize (Our Town), editions of Yorkshire TV's Calendar etc etc etc.......

Bonnie, that was Andy Cutting, who, as you said, is a very senstive player, he is revered by most melodeon players, I think he is the best.
It was rumoured that he was bringing out a solo album, that would be a treat. He's done some fine work with Chris Wood, and plays on Martin Simpson's latest.

I saw the programme and found it disappointing. The Servant Girl's Holiday was turned into a dirge - yes, the melodeon playing was lovely, but the whole song sounded really draggy and miserable, and yet it's supposed to be about how excited the girl is about her day out.

And the duet was a disaster. I couldn't really work out why Kate Rusby looked so sulky throughout. I thought Lesley Garrett rose to the occasion very well, being faced with material that isn't the genre she's used to - at least she was professional enough to carry on looking as if whe was enjoying even if there were glitches. I thought folkies were good at that :-).
