Subject: Looking for Recorded Nyckelharpa Music From: GUEST,Teefy Date: 30 Nov 21 - 01:14 PM Hello, I've recently been interested in the nyckelharpa (and may be getting lessons on it soon from a man who teaches and sells them in my area). It is not an instrument I am familiar with, and a lot of the music I have come across looking it up online is more in the sort of pseudo-viking-aesthetic metal and rock vein than folk. Any recommendations for folk groups or individuals who play would be appreciated, especially those who do some music traditional for the instrument. As well, any recommended reading or viewing would be very nice. It's such a beautiful instrument and I am eager to learn more about it. Thank you. -Teefy |

Subject: RE: Looking for Recorded Nyckelharpa Music From: Helen Date: 01 Dec 21 - 03:29 AM Peter, your link didn't work. An extra "m." before "youtube" in the address. Try this. Väsen: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert |
Subject: RE: Looking for Recorded Nyckelharpa Music From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 01 Dec 21 - 03:38 AM Helen, I don't seem to have much luck posting links from my phone this week. In my defense, the link does work from my phone (I did check and just did so again). Perhaps the m. goes to a mobile version? |
Subject: RE: Looking for Recorded Nyckelharpa Music From: DaveRo Date: 01 Dec 21 - 04:23 AM A YouTube link copied from a mobile will have the 'm' prefix. But it should work anywhere. It works on this laptop - YouTube detects that it's not a mobile and changes it to 'www'. I don't know why it didn't work for Helen. Perhaps an old browser which YouTube doesn't recognize? Great performance by Väsen. |
Subject: RE: Looking for Recorded Nyckelharpa Music From: GUEST,Peter Laban Date: 01 Dec 21 - 05:04 AM There was a Dutch band, Overstekend Wild, during the early nineties that made use of the nickelharpa, perhaps a slightly different context for it. Rent van der Zalm, who became one of Andy Irvine's sparring partners, was part of that outfit. I probably still have the cd somewhere. There's a YouTube playing here : Overstekend Wild |

Subject: RE: Looking for Recorded Nyckelharpa Music From: GUEST,Teefy Date: 01 Dec 21 - 06:07 AM Woah, thanks for all of these recommendations, especially for Väsen, Peter Laban! That concert as well as their album Keyed Up are really fun. I definitely want to read their liner notes. I had seen Vicki Swan's Youtube series 'Four a Day', but not heard any of her music, so that was nice, Dave Ro, and the Morris dancing was sweet, Long Firm Freddie. I will be sure to go through more of the music here over the course of the day. -Teefy |
