Subject: A Zoom concert for Syria and Turkey
From: Anne Lister
Date: 11 Feb 23 - 12:42 PM

On Saturday 18th February there will be a concert via Zoom to raise funds for the survivors of the earthquakes in Syria and Turkey. Because I'm in the UK, it's for the DEC which unites a range of charities, and the UK government has pledged to match funding, so doubling the result. Performers confirmed so far are: Kathy Wallis, Robb Johnson, Alex Peers, Maggie and Dick Trickey, Christine Genders, Eileen McGann, Aileen Vance, Sara Grey, Mike O'Connor and Barbara Griggs, Keith Donnelly, Dave Rowe and Frankie Armstrong. As well as myself. This links to the Just Giving page and once you've donated (making sure you leave an email) I'll ensure you get the zoom link for the event. It will start at 5 pm UK time and end when it ends - it won't be a late one! Please support this if you can.

It would be good to have some support from the 'Cat! A bit depressing to see it sinking down the list of posts with no reactions at all.

This is a very good idea. Perhaps people haven't responded because they have already made donations to the appeal?

I'd like to think you're right, Tom, but my experience is that an announcement can quickly disappear from sight if no one reacts to it, which would mean that no one would see it (or attend the concert) from this site, at least.

The publicity about this is quite muddled. The first posting says Saturday, February 18. However, the JustGiving web page says nothing about this concert; instead, it discusses a concert for Ukraine last April 3. There is nothing on that page about this year's concert.

Personally, I'm reluctant to donate or attend until the web page through which I'd donate clearly specifies the event I want to support and attend.

I have no idea why the link changed. When I posted it, it connected to the concert on Saturday 18th February. Somehow it has reverted to last year's concert. Let's try again: Concert for the Survivors
If in doubt, please message me directly or email me at anne@annelister.com for the link. I would hate to lose potential donors and audience because of a URL glitch.

Unfortunately, the web page still has problems. The top of the image is cut off, so there is no indication of the date or time there. It looks as if the bottom of the image may be cut off, too, suggesting a mismatch between the aspect ratio of the image and what the page requires.

Below the image, there is a date, but it's February 17 (Friday), rather than February 18.

Howard, I would like to think you're trying to be supportive but that's not what's coming across. The image doesn't fit perfectly, largely because we have had more performers joining the event, and also because I am many things but not a graphic designer. The event is clearly advertised as 18th (I don't know where you have seen 17th). On the page as I view it, this is perfectly clear. This Mudcat thread, from the title onwards, also makes it clear that it's the 18th, starting at 5 pm UK time. Please stop complaining about the JustGiving page. If you don't want to donate or watch the concert, kindly just ignore this thread. I am spending hours of my own time to set it up, and other performers are donating their time to perform. What are you doing, apart from suggesting that the JustGiving page isn't as pretty as you would prefer? To re-state - it is a concert to raise money for the Disasters Emergency Committee, via JustGiving. The performers come from the UK and the US, with a video from Italy. It is taking place on Saturday February 18th, starting at 5 pm UK time. Why is this hard for you to understand? The page exists for donations and announcements to be made, and the promotion is taking place via Facebook and other social media, not primarily via JustGiving. I am about to make a few more editorial changes to the graphic side of things but I could really do with support, not nitpicking.

Following on from the last post, because I'm really annoyed now, this is why I have very little to do with Mudcat these days. I am so tired of the negativity. I had hoped for lots of support. It's a brilliant line-up to raise money for an important cause. No, instead let's moan about something trivial.

Don't despair! You can't please everyone.

I'm sure you will have many more supporters than detractors.

And we can easily keep the post in view.

Anne, you deserve all possible support with this entirely worthy initiative.
Banish negativity!
And let's keep this thread refreshed! Only three days to go...

Here's a note about filling out the donation form, since this is a donations site rather than a ticketing site, and things may work a bit differently.

Anne didn't explicitly say so, but there's a checkbox at the bottom of the donation page labeled "I’m happy to share my contact details with Anne Lister for the purpose of thanking me."

I assume that one needs to check that box if one wants Anne to send the Zoom link, even if one doesn't need a thank-you note.

The link from Anne's post of the 13th worked just fine for me, complete with updates. Sorry to see that Kathy & George won't be on the program, but I've seen David & his partner doing some fine bits on zoom as an alternating-singing kind of duet in a zoom sing sessions I frequent. I've been enjoying David's maritime repertoire on several different zoom sessions; he knows some splendid songs.

This seems like an ambitious undertaking with lots of complicated moving parts. I wish you all the best technical luck for this event.

Joanne in Cleveland

Thank you, Joanne - I'm just beginning to get jittery about the actual mechanics of the whole thing. We were lucky when we did the concert for Ukraine because we had someone else (the lovely people from the Beyond the Border festival) twiddling the knobs. Oh well. It will be as good as we can make it, and I hope my technical flubs don't get in the way of the fine musicians. I'd also like to pay tribute to the people who wanted to take part but couldn't. These include Fred Gosbee and Julia Lane (US), Stacey Blythe (UK), and Kathy and George (as mentioned above).

No need to feel jittery, Anne - you're doing a grand job, and it'll be a great event.

A big thank you to everyone involved. Total raised at the time of writing is £1414. No overheads to cover. No one had to travel anywhere. And a chance to meet some new people - what could be better?
