Hi all! I've been having a lot of fun lately playing songs from Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" (New York versions) in open D (sometimes with a capo to make it open E tuning). Anybody got any other tunes they can recommend in this tuning? Chords?

Well, for chords, I am so perverse that I am doing almost everything in open D -- Rick F. (bless his heart) has helped create all sorts of jazz chordings (the trick seems to be to focus on the Em7, F#m7, Gm7 setup in open D, since that gives you the low bass, and also the bass runs on the fifth string and sixth, and then you can decide on what you want to do on the high strings, with a few changes you can get the maj7, etc.).

One that is hard to find is the B7, which is 4th string, first fret, 5th string, second fret, first string, first fret. Also, try barring the fifth fret (G) and using the other fingers as if you were doing a G or an A7 in the open D. Voila, C, and D7. You can do the same thing at A (7th fret, voila D and E7). You can bar up and down the whole guitar in all keys, naturally, and also get the different IVs and V7s. Another good Gm is 5,3,2 strings, all in the first fret.

yours, Peter T.

Use the standard tuning 'E major' (022100) chord shape, and slide it up the frets without a barre, so the unfretted strings play the same notes for all positions - instant Joni Mitchell!

To add to wes w's Emajor suggestion, try the E7 slide up as well. Also, if you haven't tried yet, get yourself a slide and try something like "Walkin' Blues" or "Come On in My Kitchen". Lots of slide licks will just roll off the neck with a bit of practice. SB

The tuning is great for picking out the melody on nearly any kind of dance melody, from reels, jigs, or hornpipes to Balkan kolos, even to bellydance tunes, because you've got built in rhythm and bass support--

I was watching the Martin Carthy BBC4 programme again last night, to see him playing Heartbreak Hotel with guitar tuned to G. Wonderful.

There's a lot of Black Crowes in open E tuning. My favorite one to play is "She Talks to Angels".

Walkin Man and Chiggers by SeasickSteve are great tunes in open D. Tricky if you aren't used to playing fingerstyle slide blues, but with a bit of practice and watching Steve play on Youtube, you'll hae them sounding good in no time

make a diagram of the finger board in this tuning.
then work out what three or more notes make up all your major and minor chords seventh sixths ninths etc,and you will be able to spot all your chord shapes on your fingerboard.
understanding how chords are made up is important.http://www.dickmiles.com

Payday ~ Mississippi John Hurt

Lakes of Pontchartrain ~ Paul Brady arrangement
(Excellent tab available as downloadable PDF at paulbrady.com)

Twelve Gates to the City ~ Fred McDowell (w/ bottleneck)

That's pretty much my entire open-D ("Vastapol") repertoire, plus I can slide around indefinitely in a 12-bar or 8-bar blues context.

Isn't the Stones' "Street Fighting Man" in open D?

I'm fairly sure that "Love In Vain," the Robert Johnson song popularized by the Stones, is in open-D/E Vastapol (unless it's in open-G/A "Spansih").

the hip's "Grace, Too" is in open e.

driving bass and rhythm! there are 7 alternate tunings on the Day for Night lp.

I think joni's "California" escaped mention, and my favourite "A Case of You".

thanks above for the "Shine" reference. jazzy when leaving high b and e strings open on the upward slide of 'e' fingering.

Here's Joni doing BYT in OPEN D... which is how I do it, too.

An interesting arrangement (with oodles of chorus pedal)!
