Subject: Hobo set at NOMAD From: kendall Date: 25 Aug 02 - 09:03 PM For those interested, Sandy Paton and I will be doing a set at N.O.M.A.D. of hobo songs. Many of you had nice comments on that impromptu session we did at the Getaway last fall. I understand Sinsull was the one who suggested this. |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Jerry Rasmussen Date: 25 Aug 02 - 09:45 PM What day and time, Kendall? I just looked through the workshop schedule and couldn't find it. Of course, it's reallll small print, and my eyes ain't what they used to be.:-) Jerry |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Midchuck Date: 25 Aug 02 - 09:51 PM You did say "hobo" and not "bum," right? P. |

Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Ferrara Date: 25 Aug 02 - 11:38 PM EXcellent! Is that before or after the FSGW Getaway? :-) Rita F |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Sandy Paton Date: 26 Aug 02 - 12:17 AM The week after the Getaway, Rita. I figured Kendall and I could work a few of the kinks out of it when we run it by the good folk at the Getaway. A practice run, so to speak. The idea came up too late for the preliminary grid of NOMAD workshops, so Marc penciled it in at 10 o'clock on Saturday night. Not prime time, but the die-hards will still be around, and that's the only audience Kendall and I can expect to attract. Fortunately, I'm used to staying up most of the night, so I should still be awake. I only hope Kendall can develop such an unwholesome folkie schedule in time. He has to get up early to walk the dog, you know. Sandy |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: kendall Date: 26 Aug 02 - 07:59 AM I'll manage! Given a good reason, I can still stay up all night. |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Midchuck Date: 26 Aug 02 - 08:45 AM Since the Woodchucks have a set from 9:00 to 10:00, everyone will obviously still be there at 10:00, so you should have no trouble getting an audience. Peter. |

Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Art Thieme Date: 27 Aug 02 - 11:19 PM Wish I could be there with you two. I had a slew of those songs at one time. LUTHER THE JET (his hobo name---real name Luther Gette) is someone you all ought to have at your festivals. He has a fine new CD out of his Hobo songs that he wrote from his personal experiences. I forgot to mention, Luther is the current and former Hobo King. He was elected to that high honor at the big hobo gathering in Britt, Iowa. He also has a PHD in French Literature. Sings unaccompanied. Works a bunch as part of THE ROSE TATTOO --- a sometime music group who does hobo and I.W.W. songs. They are: Bruce U. Utah Phillips, Mudcatter Mark Ross, Larry Penn, Banjo Fred Starner, Rik Palieri and somne others... Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Big Mick Date: 28 Aug 02 - 12:03 AM I can't get you to NOMAD, but I can get you to FSGW, Mr. Thieme. The ride offer still stands. I will be leaving on Friday and returning either Tuesday or Wednesday. Drop me an email if you are interested. Mick |

Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Art Thieme Date: 31 Aug 02 - 12:29 AM I'm heading up to the Fox Valley Folk Fest tomorrow. Looking forward to just hanging out. Take your insect repellant along wherever you're going. This West Nile thing is taking root here in Illinois or so it seems. Art Thieme |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: GUEST Date: 31 Aug 02 - 01:06 AM PLEASE EXPLAIN This West Nile thing |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Big Mick Date: 31 Aug 02 - 11:04 AM The "West Nile thing" refers to a mosquito born virus that is making its way across the eastern US. It is causing a mild hysteria in my opinion, but there is some justification for concern. My understanding is that 1 in 100 of those bitten will get the virus and most of those will suffer no more than mild headache or flu symptoms. Mick |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: katlaughing Date: 02 Sep 02 - 11:04 PM For the uninitiated out here West of the Mississippi, what the haitch does NOMAD stand for? Even their website does not explain. Thank you! It sounds like fun! I sorta figured out the Music Art and Dance, and maybe the N for Newtown, right? But, that O? |

Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Barbara Shaw Date: 03 Sep 02 - 08:39 AM Kendall did a hobo trick at Thomas Point Beach this past weekend. He wandered in, wandered off, was never seen by me again, although there were a few sightings. He's got a beautiful new banjo, so he must have been off giving viewings to the many thousand banjo lovers. Just noticed on the new grid that my band ShoreGrass is doing a set called "Bulegrass Old and New" at 9. I wonder how many bule-grass fans there actually are out there? Kendall, I'm going to try to wander over afterwards and catch some of your set with Sandy. |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Midchuck Date: 03 Sep 02 - 08:54 AM Barbara, I'd be there - but we have a conflict, dammit. Peter. |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: kendall Date: 03 Sep 02 - 09:21 AM Barbara, after I visited your site that first time, I returned three times at different times, and you were not there. So, I was not the only wanderer! I look forward to seeing you at NOMAD. |
Subject: RE: Hobo set at NOMAD From: Barbara Shaw Date: 03 Sep 02 - 02:14 PM Kendall, we looked around the circle for you a few times, but you were well hidden. Rest that voice now, or you really will sound like a hobo at NOMAD! By the way, the producer announced that there will be no Thomas Point Beach Bluegrass Festival next year. She's taking a year off, but will resume the festival the following year (supposedly). It was announced after the last show Sunday night. Peter, I'd like to finally hear the Woodchucks if we get there early enough. (By the way, our set is actually bluegrass. I don't know any bule-grass songs.) |
