Get "paid" in beer to sing/play at a beer festival.
Rotten job but someone has to do it…
Sat 28th August

A friend of mine was having a quiet beer in the Little Gem in Aylesford (Kent, near Maidstone, banks of the lovely/smelly (delete to taste) river Medway when the landlady started telling him about her forthcoming beer festival on the bank holiday weekend. Beers include Goachers IPA, Marsden Pedigree, Ruddle's County, Wadworth's 1744, Titanic White, Cornish Knocker, White Star, Tanglefoot, Fiddler's Elbow, Everards Old Original, Black Sheep Special, York IPA, Coppernob, Exmoor Gold, Crop Circle, Archer's Best, and Sandy Hunters, according to my telephone notes.

Anyway my friend who tends not to be shy says "It'd be nice to have some folk singing then" and she says "yes" so then he phones me.

Folk singers and players are promised some free beer (not sure how much). So I will be there at 11 am on the Saturday morning. The beer festival lasts the whole weekend if the beer holds out.

There are some B+Bs in the village and there may be room to pitch a tent at the community centre in the village but do your own research.

Dave and Linda I am told to tell you they would love to see you again.

See you all there?

Yes, Linda and I must get back to "The Little Gem" it's a lovely little pub, unfortunately we'll be at Towersey on the 28th Aug, so can't make it.

Yeah and me, but I am going to Towersey as well. And it's my birthday one that day. Someone should call Towersey and have it cancelled.

How about some of the FolkMob?

Woodsie, it's on an island near Australia called "Kent" and I think the Pink Fairies played there once

The trouble is that Woodsie, Dave K. etc don't drive - that's why most of them think that Knockholt is deepest Kent.

If anyone can get there, it's a superb little pub - with the accent on little - it claims to be Kent's smallest.   It has an upstairs gallery rather like a minstrel's one and the acoustics are wonderful. Linda and I have sung there often and really should have been trying to run some folk events for them, but we've been busy with other things.

Ah, Maidstone. I imagine Allington Castle's still there. What about a pub called the Malta Inn?
Cool Beans (in Detroit)

Yes, Allington Castle still stands.

THe Malta is now more of a restaurant, but is only just up the road from Aylesford and the Little Gem, so if you are passing you could check us out (long trip from Detroit).

Pete and Val HIcks (Slats and Dilligaf, depending on who has the cookie this week) will be there.

You'll have to show Pete & Val how to manage a cookie each sometime Richard. Mind you, I'm not sure if Val trusts Pete to use the PC on his own.

Looks like I may also have Jeff Cole (Jeff Cole, when he re-sets his cookie) there. Since Val is driving we may be trying for the drunkest folk singer record (I was in training with John Barden at Ely)

"we may be trying for the drunkest folk singer record"

That's all I need Richard, a CD of you and Streaky pissed out of your minds !

Try not to upset the landlady - Linda & I do hope to sing there again.

Incidently - where are they going to put all these people who will be attending the Beer Festival ? - our lounge at home is probably bigger than the bar at The Little Gem.

This Sounds nice. I'm due to be at a historical re-enactment event (which always seem to clash with good folk festivals) with the family at Detling that weekend, which I understand isn't too far away,is that right? So may be able to call in on the Saturday.
It would be nice to meet some other catters.

Sally, if you're driving, Aylesford is only one junction west along the M20 - see map. Take the road thats signed to "The Museum of Rural Life". There's no parking in Aylesford High Street, but there is a car park here in the road behind and there is a footpath through.

Yo Dave, you've been there.

My impression is there is a pub garden possibly with marquee and beer (and, if it rains, rising Medway and bog underfoot)

Am I barking mad (onthis point)?

Richard, I can't remember a garden, but there is a strip of land between the car park and the High Street. Still it's great that there should be a few of you going. It would be a great place to get a regular session going, but it's really just that bit too far away for Linda and myself to commit to running - I've suggested it to several people, including you of course. Pity it clashes with Towersey or we'd be there.

Noted Dave.

I am quite enjoying not running (or helping to run) anything and my only commitment being to turn up at the Canopus
