Many years ago, I heard a record by Elsa Lancaster that had on it such priceless ditties as "Faith, Hope and Charity" (Faith took to good works, Hope began to roam....but Charity began at home...." and "I may be fast, I may be loose, I may be easy to seduce...."
Can any one tell me where I can get a copy of it?

It's a nice record. Not really bawdy but pleasantly music-hall suggestive.

I have the LP (and I think I never got around to transferring it to cassette tape). I remember the song (one of my favorites) as "When a Lady Has a Veranda", but I'm sure I'm misremembering "Piazza".

Yup! I heard the record a couple of decades ago. A friend of mine had it. Funny stuff, nothing really all that raunchy, but some pretty racy innuendo. All in the mind of the beholder. You might not want to play it for the church social....

Elsa Lanchester was married to Charles Laughton. That must have been a snicker and a hoot!

But I'd say that her first date with Boris didn't go real well....

I remember a story about her coming in one day and finding Laughton in flagrante with one of his boyfriends on the sofa. She made him sell the sofa.

interestingly when Richard Slade was putting his project together on murder ballads and , gallows broadsheets......quite early on I came upon Elsa's version of Mrs Dyer, the Reading Baby Farmer.

I have the LP (Elsa Lanchester: Bawdy Cockney Songs, Everest 2065). Of the songs listed by Jim Dixon for the CD, it has Nos. 1-11 but none of the rest. On the other hand, it includes "If You Can't Get In the Corners", which I find decidedly snickerworthy. It is devoted to badmouthing vacuum cleaners, and contains the wonderful line "All you need is a bit of spit, your finger and a rag".

I posted a version of this yesterday, but it vanished.

The story has it that Charles Laughton and a few of his friends were arrested when the police raided an illegal poker game.

When the time came for the judge to sentence Laughton, he couldn't resist a bit of drama himself. For several minutes he berated Laughton, saying things like how he, as a prominent citizen that people looked up to, had a special obligation to set a good example for them. As the judge waxed eloquent, Laughton's head was bowed, but he was looking up at the judge, like a little boy being scolded.

". . . And so," the judge concluded his remarks, "What do you have to say for yourself?"

To which Laughton responded:

"Because Mary is pure, must I be denied my cakes and ale?"
