last year my husband died and we had a holiday planned in the u.k. We are from New Zealand and would have loved to have visited together having never seen any of the world. I thought 'bugger' I'm not going to give up life and have decided to go myself. At 70 it's quite exciting to do something so scarey for the first time and I have now booked everything!! BUT I have no idea how to get to Whitby and neither does my kiwi travel agent.So i thought I would ask Mudcat advice. Can i take a train? or a bus perhaps. Do i have to book my fare?
I would be very grateful for any suggestions.

Hi, Sheala. There are two main Whitbys in England. There is one in Flintshire on the west coast and another in North Yorkshire on the east coast. Which is it you wish to visit?

Where will you be staying prior to your journey to Whitby?

On the assumption that you would be travelling from London to Whitby North Yorkshire lets say on Monday August 21st and returning a week later, then have a look at this train link.

Peace, you seem confused. Flintshire is in WALES. They wouldn't like being called English. Both your links seem to lead to the same Whitby, the E coast seaside resort with great folk festival (see other threads). There is one in the North West near Ellesmere Port (which is near Liverpool). No-one would want to go there. (Duck)
I couldn't find one in Flintshire, though they have a volleyball team! Well, Ellesmere Port is near the Welsh border.

Hi Sheala
From London, GNER trains run to York. change at York for Scarborough & then a bus from Scarborough to Whitby. Trains from York to Scarborough run every hour & buses from Scarborough to Whitby run every hour too.
This souds onerous but I live in Whitby & regularly have to go down to london & it's really not too bad. Would suggest that you bookthe London to York train seat but otherwise no need to book.
Have to report that the sun is shining in lovely Whitby!

Hi Sheala ,
If you find yourself north of York ( you may well be tracing Captain Cook's footsteps who was born / schooled near Middlesbrough ).
One of the best kept secrets, apparent by the answers given in this thread ,is, the Main line Railway from Middlesbrough to Whitby.
Very beautiful and relaxing route.
You would need to check timetables as this is not a regular hourly-type run .

Have to agree with Betsy here. The Middlesbrough-Whitby train route is one of the most picturesque in the UK - it goes right over the North York Moors. An even prettier diversion would have been to take a day or two out on the North York Moors while you're here - there are buses and trains that will take you out there from Whitby.

Whitby is very pretty and the festival is wonderful! I've booked a week there myself. You'll enjoy your stay.

Accommodation is generally very hard to get in Festival week (August 19-25 this year), but you should be ok at other times provided you book in advance.

i think they all forgot to say how expensive and unreliable uk train and bus service is..


if i lived anywhere near whitby i'd volunteer to meet you and find somewhere for you to kip on a sofa or floor..

i wish my mum was as adventurous and lively as you ..

I hadn't thought much about shortage of accomodation.B&B would be nice but I will bring a tent though. We've always been great on camping .... and I still am. I'm more concerned about getting there in the first place. You have all been so helpful.I feel I need to choose between the train journey all the way there as suggested by The Villain. ... Struth i hope that's a name to be trusted!. and the journey that Guest aelfleda suggested,With the experience of local knowledge,but we'll get there. I've been told the fish and chips are something.

This is an option, that may well be suitable for you, because of lack of transport and taking into account the safety aspect of travelling alone, if that is what you are doing.
