Subject: RE: Any November Songs? From: GUEST,henryp Date: 01 Jan 25 - 07:51 AM Saint Martin's Day or Martinmas and historically called Old Halloween or All Hallows Eve, is the feast day of Saint Martin of Tours and is celebrated in the liturgical year on 11 November. The feast day has widely been superseded by Remembrance Day. Farm hands were once engaged for the next year at a hiring fair, often held in October on Old Martinmas Day. Jack Beeforth, a retired farmer interviewed by Dave Hillery in 1974, recalled going to hire staff at the hiring fair in Whitby. And he also had a story about a hiring fair, published by Roy Palmer in his book, The Sound of History (1988). As Roy Palmer wrote, hiring was a very speculative and hazardous enterprise for both parties. A lad goes to t'hirings and meets a farmer who says, 'Ista for hiring?' 'Aye', says t’lad. 'What can you deea?' says t'farmer. 'Oh, ommost onnything on a farm', says t'lad. 'Well thoo looks a likely lad', says t'farmer. 'Wheer were you last?’ ‘Wi' him over theer', says t'lad. 'Can you get yourself a character?' says t'farmer 'and then I'll hire you'. So the lad goes over to t'feller he were wi', and asks him for a character. 'Nay, lad, you deeant want to go wi' him. He'll hunger yer and work yer and you'll have a right bad time'. So the lad goes back to t'farmer. 'Well, have you got a character?' says he. 'Why,' says t'lad, 'I haven't got one for me, but he's just given me a right one for thee'. I have put this story into verse. It’s a song about honesty; it’s needed on both sides. And, if you read the news, it’s clear that we still have problems agreeing fair terms between employers and employees! Henry Peacock THE WHITBY FARMER Tune; The Man in the Moon - see The Full English on youtube A farmer he goes to the Martinmas Fair To see the farm workers who all gather there. Lad, ista for hiring? Hasta got a strong arm? Says the lad, I can do onnything on a farm. Chorus; Now you may be a farmer or follow the plough But in this rough world we must rub along now Wherever you go and whatever you do In all of your dealings be honest and true Well, thoo looks a good lad. Wheer were you last year? Says the lad, Wi’ t’feller as stands over theer. Now if he will put in a good word for thee, Then I’ll hire thee this year – tha can come wham wi’ me. Chorus Now the lad he steps over to get a good word. Nay, says his owd master, Lad, have yer not heard? You deean’t want to go wi’ him and mek a new home. He’ll hunger thee and work thee reet dahn to the bone. Chorus So the lad he goes back to the farmer again. Have you got a good word, lad? the farmer says then. Nay, says the lad, I’ve not got one for me, But he’s told me to never go working for thee. Subject: RE: Any November Songs? From: GUEST,Bill F Date: 09 Nov 25 - 05:29 AM NOVEMBER 12th Capo on 2 D My name is Private Joe Carpenter G of the 51st Rifles in France. And I'm here to pick up the pieces of people D left when the armies advanced. The rats here grow fat on the flesh of my comrades G rotting out in no-man's land. Now, I'm trying to give some poor old bugger his name back D when all I can find is his hand. Chorus D November 11th, they rung out the bells. C The crowds hit the streets as they silenced the shells. D And I bet old Lloyd George were proud of himself C G D but he weren't digging graves on November the 12th. My brother died up in Ypres last winter he'd signed up as soon as he could. Now bits of his body lie buried forever in ten foot of Passchendale mud. There is no graveside my mother can mourn at; she cries out into the night. She said that his death is a message from heaven that God never meant us to fight. Chorus I were digging some place when I come face to face with two unblinking eyes staring back. It give me a fright, by some trick of the light, I swear, it looked like our Jack. But it were only some German boy, barely sixteen, I stood there and whispered a prayer. I said, “You weren't ever really my enemy, son No, he's sat in some office, somewhere.” Change to last two lines of chorus And I hope all warmongers rot down in hell 'cause I'd make 'em dig graves on November the 12th.
