Subject: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Barry Finn Date: 28 Oct 99 - 01:46 AM This coming Wednesday night, Dec.1, our own Dan Milner will be the featured guest singer. It'll probably start around 9:30 & who knows what'll happen after that. There's no charge, the way we work this is that weekly the singers or listeners who come, donate a dollar & when the kitty starts burning a hole in the holders pockets we start looking for a guest singer who'll be enjoyed by the regulars & any who just happen on in & Dan is a sure bet. He follows our last guest Frank Harte. It happens at Paddy Burke's on Portland St. Boston, that's near the old Boston Gardens or now known as the new Fleet Center. See ya, be there or be square. Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Vixen Date: 28 Oct 99 - 08:37 AM Dear Barry-- Have you read the thought for 10/28, actually 27 thread? This coming Wednesday is NOVEMBER 3. 1 December *does* fall on a Wednesday, but which is it? This Wednesday? or 1 December? If it's December, Timbo and I might be able to make it! V |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: paddymac Date: 28 Oct 99 - 01:24 PM Good observation, Vixen, but don't be too hard on the boy. Look at the time on his post. He probably just had a pint too many. I'm jealous, both for the pints and for the singing session. |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Barry Finn Date: 28 Oct 99 - 07:05 PM Thanks Vixen, it's on Dec 1, sorry, will ya look at that, I stay out to late one night singing & I go & lose a month, a mind & a memory all in a moments notice but as always the music was great & it was worth the loss of every little brain cell. Are you & Tim coming to the area around then, let me know it'd be great. If so, be prepared to loose all your marbles for the month. Barry |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Liam's Brother Date: 28 Oct 99 - 08:04 PM Thanks, Barry. I just want to take a minute to talk about on the format of the Singers' Circle. The guest is, as Barry mentioned above, the featured singer... or should I say only the featured singer. Because virtually everyone else who will be in the room is a singer too, anyone who comes along to Paddy Burke's will both have a chance to hear an assortment of good singers and get to sing too. Hope to see you all there.
All the best, |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Barry Finn Date: 25 Nov 99 - 11:41 PM After losing a month somewhere in between I thought I'd refresh this. It's definitly Wed. Dec 1. I believe that there is a suggested donation though ($2 - $5). See ya there. Barry |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Dec 99 - 02:02 AM Well I just got in & what a time. Dan was in great style & form, charmed the ears & hearts of all, as well as drove the big terrible snow storm back into the sea. We didn't even see a flake. Grand job Dan. Barry |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Liam's Brother Date: 02 Dec 99 - 04:23 PM Hi Barry! It was great to spend the night with a crowd of like minded folk. I think we all had a ball! If there was a single high point of the night for me, it was seeing Peter Johnson again... a guy who did so much for folk music in Greater Boston. He's the first guy I've kissed in a long time but that was just what came into my mind. I am pleased to say I am now a card carrying member of The Boston Folk & Traditional Singers' Club and I will do all I can to promote the weekly Wenesday singing session. Thanks to your and our other friends for the invitation. I'll see you as soon as I'm in the neighborhood again.
All the best, |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: RiGGy Date: 02 Dec 99 - 08:46 PM Booop - Booop !!!!! What IS Peter like these days ?????? Is he a part of the Scene ? Too many stories; deserves his own thread or 2 !! RiGGy |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Liam's Brother Date: 02 Dec 99 - 10:22 PM Peter has his own thread. Just seach for "Peter Johnson" and you'll find him.

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Barry Finn Date: 02 Dec 99 - 11:10 PM Hi RiGGy, Peter is just fine, matter of fact he seems just great. He's been out of the loop for ages but he's just started up Living Traditions again & is gonna see if he can't revive the singer's nights (really it's Peter Johnson night) at Passim's again among some other things. He's mellowed much & gone are the boop boops but watch the glaze in his eye when he starts talking music or singing, there's the spark that never died. On the way home I kept thinking about Peter & the music he exposed a city to. Some went to Scotland, Ireland or England to collect songs & bring em here for the rest of us & thank God for them. Peter on the other hand would just bring over the singers & before you knew it a full blown music party was on full tilt. It was great fun having Dan join us & us join him & it was twice the pleasure to see Peter there who ages ago put on Shay who was now putting on Dan who Peter had also put on ages ago, kind of like an old family gathering where one of the elders who may have been ill for a time had recovered to pick up where they had left off, maybe with a little less energy & a bit more age but with a greater sense of maturity & wisdom & with no less love. Dan, if ever there's a man who should be kissed or hugged by their peers he's your man. You should've seen his heart swell when I told him about the thread about him & that both (Uncle) Kendall & (Uncle) Sandy were happy to hear of him & well wished him, I was teary eyed, he was just thrilled that (not still crazy) after all these years some still thought of him, never mind in a good light. These nights keep happening like this & I'm gonna be ready for not only the poor house & the dog house but I'm gonna start thinking that that's where I should be just before dying with a smile on my face as I'm carted into some pre-dawn ER. Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Peg Date: 03 Dec 99 - 04:15 PM Wow sounds like this was great. Sorry I missed it (I had to stay home nursing a bad cold, which is still stubbornly hanging on) but I did get to hear Dan sing the night Frank Harte was a featured guest, and his stuff was just wonderful. Hope to see you there in future, Dan! Peg p.s. I am surprised Barry even got the year right, let alone the month!!! :) just joshin' ya... |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Barry Finn Date: 05 Mar 00 - 10:43 PM In case anyone's around & interested, March 22 Martin Wyndham-Read will be the guest singer & Judy who had a hand in this is pretty excited & I can't blame her. Met Martin a yr or so back at a House & Porch concert series in New Hampshire, in the after concert session meeting him was so pleasing aside from his well known talent & knowledge of the music he sings he's such a nice guy to boot. This Wed. March 8th, though not a guest singer just a drop in on his way around planet will be Peter Evans blue water sailor/circumnavigator & folk song collector will be dropping in. His book "Australian Favorite Ballads" pub. by Oak 1965 is a gem.
Yes Peg, that was our same Phillippa, hopefully we'll get to meet up with her again. See ya there. |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Judy Predmore Date: 06 Mar 00 - 12:35 AM Potentially bad news: Martyn Wyndham-Read is having VISA work permit problems. He may have to cancel his March 2000 tour. I'll keep you posted. If he cancels, I'll post a separate thread, so anyone planning to see him anywhere on the east U.S. coast will know. If he can definitely make it, i'll post a new thread for Boston, so people don't have to wade through the earlier posts here... See you Wednesday |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Peg Date: 06 Mar 00 - 01:32 PM oh I hope he can still make it! Ya know I was thinking about potential future guests: Niamh Parsons will be in town for Gaelic Roots; Dick Gaughan is scheduled to perform at Johnny D's in April; Pentangle (Jacqui McShee) is to be there in May; and Karan Casey is scheduled for Boston in May, too...all these folks would be great if we could get 'em!!! And it would add a woman or two to the mix, which is always a good thing...;0 peg |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Judy Predmore Date: 07 Mar 00 - 01:14 AM Sorry, Martyn Wyndham-Read has had to cancel his first tour in 33 years of professional touring. He's quite disappointed & frustrated, & sends his apologies to all. So that leaves us with money to burn... I vote for Niamh Parsons or Tim Dennehy from the Gaelic Roots festival. I'm sure Shay would vote for Dick Gaughan. Everyone probably wants Karan Casey. Pentangle would be nice, but where would we fit them? We'll probably have to decide on a priority list, & go down the list til we get someone who could actually make it... |
|
Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Peg Date: 07 Mar 00 - 12:14 PM Judy; yeah, they would all suit me...since Dick Gaughan is in Boston in April and Niamh Parsons in late June, maybe we could do both??? I would probably ask for Dick Gaughan if we could only have one of them... I spoke with Karan Casey several times (we kept ending up in the ladies' room together)when she performed at the Burren and she was quite friendly but I don't know how to get in touch with her... peg |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: GUEST,Philippa Date: 19 Jan 02 - 05:41 AM just doing a search for Karan Casey and I selected this thread. I was at her CD launch in Cork last Easter. Just to let you know about an on-line article about Karan, appearing in Glasgow Celtic connections series, in the Sunday Herlad Hello Barry, hope you're well. regards to the others at Paddy Burkes. I saw Roisín White wearing the T-shirt here in Ireland. |

Subject: RE: Guest at the Boston Singers Session From: Peg Date: 19 Jan 02 - 01:01 PM I actually had a fair amount of contact with Karan at Old Songs last summer; she did a lot of performing and a couple workshops. The first day of her two-part singing workshop was a concert which I think some were disappointed in..notthe concert, but that she was doing a a how-to workshop...then the next day she DID do a singing class! (Some of the folks who came the day before did not show up) She was great. She was very complimentary to me and said I should keep singing! She is one of my favorite singers and has been a real model for me (though my voice is nothing like hers). This new line-up seems to be working well for her; the new guitarist is great! though Donal Clancy who played with her and Niall briefly was also wonderful...
