Thank you. I went to a Borders Books and Music Friday night, and they have local talents to come and play in their coffeeshop area. A father and daughter named Jim and Holly Lawrence from Fredricksburg, VA played traditional Scottish and Irish music. I thoroughly enjoyed them. Their CD is "Of Gaels and Saints", if any of you hear about them. Sharon

Sharon,

Which Borders did you go to, and do you know what else they may have scheduled? There is one near me, and I have been meaning to check them out to see what the line-up is there, but have not had the time of late.

Also, does anyone else have any listings for local (DC) small concerts, sessions, gatherings, and/or festivals that are not well advertised?

Well, it may be a bit early to let you know, but you can catch me at Pat Troy's Irish pub on Sunday, September 9th at 6 pm. It's in Alexandria. Website http://pattroysirishpub.com I'll be doing traditional singing.

Sorry, of course you have to put www.pattroysirishpub.com Well, if you do a search for Pat Troys Irish pub you should get it. Anyway apart from me they have a lot of Irish music and especially interesting are "Kathleen's Concerts" in which she gives exposure to bands and musicians who are not well known in the DC area. Check them out if you are in or around DC.

Well, thanks. I am not very well known, but I'm hoping there will be some folks there anyway. They are promoting it as "Grandparent's Day"! so if you are a granny or granpa or have one - come celebrate at Pat Troy's!

Check out the Folklore Society of Greater Washington for all kinds of doings in/around the DC area. They have a good website at http://fsgw.org with calendars, contact info, etc.

If you're doing a concert, let 'em know and they're likely to post it for you.

The Folklore Society of Greater Washington will be hosting a concert by the great traditional Irish singer Tim Lyons on the evening of September 5, 2001.

The venue hasn't been determined yet (probably in Takoma Park/Silver Spring area) which is why it iss't publicly posted yet. When I get a venue for it (yes, I'm the impressario here) details will be up at www.fsgw.org/calendar.htm and/or www.fsgw.org/concert.htm..

Those webpages will also keep you informed about other FSGW-sponsored events in the greater DC area.

Five more places to jam which are not in DC proper, but within reasonable driving distance:

Contra Dance Open Band, Glen Echo Park, 2nd Friday of the month, some 40 musicians for 600 dancers in the Spanish Ballroom. I don't care who your are, you never played for a contra dance until you've done this one. Get there by 7 if you're new, or you'll sit in the fifth row on stage. (A properly executed "Balance and Swing" will blow the music off your stand). Call National Park Service for more info.

Market St Cafe, Frederick, MD. Every Tuesday night from 6:30 on, alternating Tues. nights between Old-Time and Irish. (301) 540-2092 Jeanean Martin, for more info.

Boe's Strings (music store), Frederick, MD. Nothing but hard as nails Bluegrass. (They do not suffer beginners well). Every Thursday night.

Martinsburg Train Station, Martinsburg WV every Wednsday night from 7:30 on. Singer-songwriter, Celtic, Old-Time. A lot of local Folk singers work out their songs and form groups from the participants. (304) 876-0215, Don Moore for info.

O' Hurleys General Store, Shepherdstown, WV. Every Thursday night from 7:30 on. Oldest jam in the area, running for twenty years. Epicenter of the revived hammered dulcimer movement, and a hiring hall for local musicians. Primarily Celtic, with a touch of Scots-Irish Traditional. Everything from folk harps to cellos, fiddlers to autoharps, hammered and lap dulcimers. Beware of unrestrained ceili/clogging during music. (304) 876-6907 Jay Hurley or Genevive O'Loughlan for info.

Seamas!!! You old dog! I didn't know you posted here!

And for anyone near the Annapolis area, please *do* check out Seamas on select Monday nights at Harry Browns. He won't be available for a few Mondays to come, as he is going to ALASKA! (WOW!). But check his site for more details. I'd give the link Seamas, but my link failed and would not give me the address.
