Subject: Suitable gift for a musician
From: Emma B
Date: 08 Jul 02 - 02:37 PM

Two friends (a couple with teenage children) are both celebrating their 50th birthday later this summer with the customary weekend-long 'bash' Assorted friends and family would like to commemerate this achievement in the time-honoured tradition but, being mostly fifty-somethings ourselves, have run out of ideas for original presents. They are both versatile musicians with a talent and fondness for celtic and Klezmer music. Any suggestions (however zany) welcome and, if either of you are reading this (you know who you are), just say (anonomously of course) what you would really like.

Well, I should hope they're both celebrating! ;^)

It may not be very original, but a gift certificate to their favorite folk-music shop might be appreciated. Or perhaps you could pay their admission and camping fee for their favorite music festival.

I'd vote for a gift certificate to either a music shop or a store with a good selection of folk/traditional cd's.

If you're all going to get together for a BIG present, how about a trip to Ireland and admission to a festival there? Willy Clancy Summer School (Willie Week) or the Scoil Eigse associated with the All Ireland fleadh spring to mind- workshops and plenty of associated sessions and jollity...

A A 440 tuning fork (small gift)

A MUSSEHL AND WESTPHAL MUSICAL SAW----out of Wisconsin---Put in a search engine and there they will be.----28 inch length (larger gift)
I played one of these for the last 30 years and I still mess with it and I can't play hardly anything these days. Comes with a bow of nylon cord. The 28-inch length is the best sound and the easiest to play (control).

DO NOT USE THE BOW ON THE SIDE WITH TEETH. THAT SIDE ALWAYS PLAYS SHARP !!!)

You might check out www.theMusicStand.com (sorry I haven't learned how to do blue clickies yet...). They have everything from T-shirts to mugs to clocks to tote bags to lamps to music cabinets to god knows what else, all with a music -- even particular instruments -- theme. Some of it is dreck, but some is fairly cool. I get their print catalog, which I find a bit easier to use than the website, and have ordered quite a few things over the years.

Cheers, Nancy

I heartily recommend a gift I, myself, have given to a number of musical friends: CURRENCY. Versatile, useful, and never out of fashion. Sorry, I apologize but the spirits have taken control. I'm being forced to tell you that in German, gift means 'poison'.

Well, gee, you could do some of the party. In our house, we have made: Life sized banjo cakes, as well as mandolin cakes, and bodhran cakes. Howabout a mandolin pinata, filled with strings and picks and stuff? Had the treasure hunt one year for each and all with a small gift at the end. If you have a banjo player: we got ours 2 dozen 5th strings one year......he's not playing if he doesn't break one per session. Of, if you have the $$$$, really nice music stands (ours are wooden, and hold at least 4 books) or really nice stand up's for stringed instruments. Or, if they play accordian.....the care and feeding of your diatonic accordian by Jehan Paul. Yeah, we take b'days SERIOUS in these parts!

Hire a Celtic or Klezmer group to come and play for them.

If you want to drive them nuts give them one of the following.... an old sitar, a poorly made hurdygurdy, a bagpipe of some sort with the wrong drones, or a C-melody saxophone. Oh and then an appointment with a psychologist.
