My friend has a vinyl record with the song on it, but we can't sort out the chords. So if you can figure them out, I'd be most appreciative. I've never really paid much attention to Hoyt Axton, and I see now that that was a mistake. Thanx--ww |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Hoyt Axton Song: EVANGELINA From: Lin in Kansas Date: 23 Dec 02 - 01:41 AM WW: Don't have the chords to Evangelina, but Hoyt Axton is definitely worth checking out. His Della and the Dealer has been discussed extensively on the 'Cat (do a forum/DT search), and IMHO is one of his better efforts. Have fun! Lin |

Subject: RE: Chord Req: Hoyt Axton Song: EVANGELINA From: RichM Date: 23 Dec 02 - 02:04 PM Here's how I used to play this song in the 70's, with Toronto folkies Rick Speyer, Ron (Mr.Metronome)Sherwin, and Al "Captain" Brady --aka "Ditch Diggers & the Driller" . This is a simplified version, you can add other chords, but this sounds good as it is! I chorded this in key of G. I'm not sure what key Hoyt did it in, my record player ain't currently hooked up... Enjoy, Rich ("Ditch") McCarthy VERSE (G)And I dream in the (Em)morning, (D)that she brings me (G)water And I dream in the (A)evening, that she brings me (D)wine Just a poor man's (G)daughter--(C)-- from Porto Pen(G)ãsco South of the (D)border—(C)-- in Old Mexic(G)o CHORUS And the f(D)ire I feel for that woman I love it's dr(C)ivin' me ins(G)ane Knowin' she's w(D)aiting --(C)--I can't g(G)et there G(D)od only knows that I'll wrack my brain, to t(C)ry to find a w(G)ay To reach that w(D)oman --(C)-- in Old M(G)exico |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Hoyt Axton Song: EVANGELINA From: Declan Date: 24 Dec 02 - 05:22 AM Rich, Nice chords and pretty close to the way I do it. I wrote mine out to post them this morning, but you beat me to it. I think I'll post them anyway 'cause yu can use an F Chord in the chorus, which I think makes the song. The way I play it is : (G)And I dream in the (Em)morning, (D)that she brings me (G)water And I dream in the (A)evening, that she brings me (D)wine Just a (D)poor man's daughter--(C)-- from (D)Porto Pen(G)ãsco South of the (D)border—(D7)-- in Old Mexic(G)o CHORUS And the f(D)ire I feel for that (F)woman I love it's dr(C)ivin' me ins(G)ane Knowin' she's w(D)aiting --(D7)--I can't g(G)et there (C/D) G(D)od only knows that I'll (F)wrack my brain, to t(C)ry to find a w(G)ay To reach that w(D)oman --(C)-- in Old M(G)exico |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Hoyt Axton Song: EVANGELINA From: Bullfrog Jones Date: 27 Dec 02 - 02:06 PM I agree with Declan about the F in the chorus, but I make that first chorus chord (on 'fire') to be a Bm. That's based on a live version I've got by Hoyt Axton. BJ |

Subject: Lyr Add: EVANGELINA (Hoyt Axton, Higgenbotham) From: GUEST,Dave MacKenzie Date: 19 Nov 08 - 07:40 PM It's the middle of the night so I can't check them out, but I used to do it in E (capoed up to G) and had an F# and G# (no minors). For the record, here are the words I used: EVANGELINA (Axton and Higgenbotham) Well I dream in the morning she brings me water, And I dream in the evening that she brings me wine; Just a poor man's daughter from Puerto Peñasco - Evangelina in Old Mexico. There's a great hot desert south of Mexicali; If you don't have water, boy, you better not go; Tequila won't get you across that desert - no, no, To Evangelina and Old Mexico. And the fire I feel for the woman I love is drivin' me insane, Knowin' she's waiting and I can't get there; God only knows that I rack my brains, trying to find a way To reach that woman in Old Mexico. And I met a kind man, he guarded the border, Said you don't need papers - I will let you go; I can tell that you love her by the look in your eyes now, She's the rose of the desert in Old Mexico. And the fire I feel for the woman I love is drivin' me insane, Knowin' she's waiting and I can't get there; God only knows that I rack my brains, trying to find a way To reach that woman in Old Mexico. And I dream in the morning she brings me water, And I dream in the evening she brings me wine; Just a poor man's daughter from Puerto Peñasco - South of the border in Old Mexico; Evangelina - I miss you so. By Axton and Higgenbotham. As sung by Hoyt Axton on Fantasy Double LP F-79009 "Bread and Roses". |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Evangelina (Hoyt Axton) From: GUEST,Mark Summerson Date: 20 Mar 10 - 02:10 PM The chords are: Verse G Em D G Well I dream in the morning she brings me water, G Am D And I dream in the evening that she brings me wine; G C c Just a poor man's daughter from Puerto Peñasco - d G Evangelina in Old Mexico. Refrain G Bm Am C G And the fire I feel for the woman I love is drivin' me insane, D G Knowin' she's waiting and I can't get there; Bm Am C G God only knows that I rack my brains, trying to find a way D G To reach that woman in Old Mexico. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Evangelina (Hoyt Axton) From: GUEST,Kenny Higginbotham Date: 21 Sep 10 - 07:11 AM I wrote this song with Hoyt and I'd like to share the chords we used. Both Declan and Mark are close but there are some minor differences in the actual chords as written. G Em And I dream in the morning D G/C/G That she brings me water. A7 And I dream in the evening D/D7 That she brings me wine. G Just a fisherman's daughter C G From Puerto Penasco D G Evangelina in old Mexico That is essentially the same for all verses although I use and ascending progression on the A7 to embellish. The Bridge is as follows: G F#m F C And the fire I feel for the woman I love G Is drivin' me insane. D Knowin' she's waitin' G And I can't get there. F#m F God only knows that I wracked my brain C G To try and find a way D To reach that woman G In old Mexico. Note: I originally wrote this song after I had spent a week in Puerto Penasco with a very special woman. The town was a fairly prosperous (by Mexico standards) fishing village on the Eastern side of the Sea of Cortez. I used the phrase (and still do) Fisherman's daughter which Hoyt changed to Poor Man's daughter. I also wrote a second Bridge which Hoyt chose not to use, repeating the first Bridge instead. I hope this helps anyone who want's to play this song. |
Subject: RE: Chord Req: Evangelina (Hoyt Axton) From: GUEST,Kenny Higginbotham Date: 21 Sep 10 - 07:20 AM Regarding my last post. For some reason it save a little different than what I copied from Word. Here's a slight correction: G Em And I dream in the morning D G/C/G That she brings me water. A7 And I dream in the evening D/D7 That she brings me wine. G Just a fisherman's daughter C G From Puerto Penasco D G Evangelina in old Mexico Bridge G F#m F C And the fire I feel for the woman I love G Is drivin' me insane. D/D7 Knowin' she's waitin' G And I can't get there. F#m F God only knows that I wracked my brain C G To try and find a way D/D7 To reach that woman G In old Mexico. |
