Why can't you Americans put your dates in natural progression like the rest of the world! Don't you realise what confusion it causes. OK so 6/29/00 can't be read wrong but if you tell us to listen to something on say 5/6/00 most people would have missed it!!!
You wouldn't list time as mins/hrs/secs would you?.. why on earth do you do it with dates?
Ok.. so I've had my whinge.. I feel better now.

Probably because when we speak we give month, day, year. So it is natural for us to write it that way. In the states at least,it is far more natural to say "June 30th", then "the 30th of June"

Cause it's just the way we do it! We also say stuff like June 29th, 2000....which is month/day/year. No one has ever had any problems with it.

I asked that question once before and did get a reasonable answer as to why (which I can't remember) but also agreement that our system is more logical than the American one.

If you think about it to go from small units to big units gives DD/MM/YY. I suppose the only problem with that system is we work on HH:MM:SS which works the other way round so perhaps the most logical system would be YY/MM/DD which allows the DD to be further divided int HH:MM:SS while retaining the same logic. Either way ,to go MM/DD/YY is completely illogical.

First, I am very sorry I missed, this one, it sounds as if it was great. However, Mbo, how wrong you are when you say "No one has ever had any problems with it." Coming from a family that constantly moved back and forth between the French and American systems (so 5/6 was either the 6th of May or the 5th of June) and we have missed planes, concerts, birthdays, you name it, because the Americans don't put what you need most to know, first. Generally you know what month it is, and it's the exact day you're looking for, so 6/5/00 makes more sense to me as it's the 6th (and I already know it's of May, 2000) than as yeah, it's May, OH yeah and it's the 6th.

My eldest sister circumvented this with both her daughters, born 7/7 and 4/4, so as they move between school systems at least that part doesn't matter.
It also took me forever to stop writing my name last name first, and now that is what American forms have changed to... but I still cross my 7's!

Mbo... no-one is suggesting that if you say June 29th, 2000 that anyone would have any problem with it. We in England are just as likely to say it one way as the other. The problem is when you write 6/29/00 when you really mean 29/6/00... or can't you see that? It really is time you in the US fell in line with everyone else so that we all know what we mean.

Mbo, if it really disturbs you, you could enter it as 01-Jul-00, as it comes up on thread messages. Although I'm from the US and understand your dates as you do, we need to remember we have a pretty universal community here, so we should make some attempt to make things understandable by all.

In my correspondence I now say May 6th instead of 5/6 or 6/5. From what I have observed, here in the US it is usually a pretentious person who writes 6 May instead of May 6th. I think it is considerate to make one's speaking clear, especially when addressing an international community...but please deliver me from all the snob wannabes who are so arrogant as to purposely try to use a manner of speaking or writing just to call attention to what they know. This really is a small issue which is easily solved by just writing out the month. It really doesn't matter if it's first or second.

good grief!....the things we can get upset about!....if one is talking about a contract, or explaining about someone's birthday, it CAN be confusing, and it makes sense to NAME the month..i.e. MAY 6, even if you continue doing mm/dd/yy or whatever... at other times, but in here...planning a HearMe session, it really is NOT hard to guess what month is being referred to, even if folks don't do it to YOUR standard! I am in the US, but if I were to vote, I guess I see the point about using one universal standard now that the WWW is so common..(we need to move to decimal measure, too, but just try to get THAT through the US congress!)....but I'm willing to do it, and do dd/mm/yy, too.....

now...will you Brits start driving on the RIGHT side of the road, like most of the rest of the world?..*grin*

But when one has a child at school in Scotland who is beginning to talk as if she comes from the middle of the Atlantic, has always preferred grey to gray, (I think it may have more brown in it that way) and has a hard time remembering if I should apologise or apologize...how is one to tell? Actually I do write my dates as 2 July 2000 and no one in Vermont ever says anything about it being pretentious. It's just clearer. I can't remember to do stuff on the day I'm supposed to anyway so every bit of clarity helps. However crossing the 7s doesn't always do any good. My husband does and I STILL cannot figure out what he has written...and neither can the bank!
