There was at least one who has passed away. I know of another one or two, but they don't seem to define themselves by that; rather they are musicians.

Now, if you want to talk where to hear good First Nations or "NDN" music, I can point you to some really good sites as well as several threads on the subject. Several of us have connections to First Nations, either through family members or friends.

For a start, I highly recommend listening to American Indian Radio On Satellite at www.airos.org. When you get there, click on "Listen to audio" then follow the prompts.

There's a small town in the BC where everyone's related too. You don't find so much of that nowadays.

We love to attend the Pow-Wow at Cape Croker Reserve (north of Wiarton Ontario) where the folks are friendly, the food tastey, and the music and dance fascinating. There's some good craft art too. Lots of drumming, and what to my ears sounds like chanting.

On Scoville's clickie one of the sound clips is by the late Lee Cremo of Cape Breton. I danced to his music in my younger days, He could play really well! There were and are still some great musicians in the Mi'kmaq nation.

JimLad, my apologies...I prefer First Nations to Native American and, although I know it is usually associated with Canada, I think of it as referring to any indigenous peoples of the Americas. The former members I mentioned were all in the US. Sorry about that.

No problem. I saw a display on it at . . . either the Smithsonian or the Museum of the American Indian in D.C. last year and had to go find myself a CD. The Smithsonian's music shop is a dangerous place.

If you'd like I can give you some page details....Let me know and I'll put them in this thread for you...and I've found the most incredible song called 'The Return of Crazy Horse' by Dan Britton too....Absolutely magnificent lyrics!!

I'm not too hung up on the titles at all and doubt that First Nations or North American Natives care whether it is Canada or America since they pre date both countries. I'll look into that "Myspace" thing but the place scares me for some reason.

Jim Lad, don't fear MySpace. Well, don't fear the MUSICIAN part of MySpace. Lots of folkies on there. The personal pages can be a bit horrifying but the musician pages, even if they're a primitive, are great.

There is also a fiddle tune called "Creek Nation" that, according to the book from which I learned it, was based on a Creek song. I was highly dubious but a friend who is part-Native American and knows more about the music than I do said she recognized it. It's in C. It's not a very common tune, though, and I don't know of any commercial recordings offhand (but I haven't looked hard). Sort of an interesting example of cross-acculturation.

One of the very best and one of my all-time favourite NDN artists: Keith Secola and His Wild Band of Indians. I see he just won Best of Folk/Accoustic CDs in the Aboriginal Peoples Music Awards. Yea, Keith!

Also, if you ever go into Paltalk, look in the Music Rooms for Native American related rooms. I've often found some wonderful artists and kind people in them, very welcoming.

Scoville...I can't even look at Folkways, Folk Legacy and Camsco...our bills would never get paid!**bG**

Last I knew it had lots of great MUSIC rooms, Jim. :-) Have to look at the Music rooms exclusively, but you do need to be sure you have the adult content filter off as some of them are rated for language. I don't know anything about the girls and video talk!
