Subject: Incongruous lines From: Gurney Date: 25 Jan 05 - 04:38 AM 'Hey Lord, I've got some Green Alligators, and long-necked Geese, some humpy-backed Camels and some Chimpanzees. Some Cats, and Rats, and Elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn, I just can't find any Unicorns.' Why on earth did the songwriter ((Bruce?) Silverstein?) think that the Ark was needed to save Alligators or Geese. And why would anyone want to save Rats? Just an invitation to contribute any lines that strike you as incongruous. |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Liz the Squeak Date: 25 Jan 05 - 04:58 AM Why did He bother saving rats? Well, rats form a useful function in life... we'd be knee deep in all kinds of crap if rats didn't eat it.... And what would we test new drugs on? You have a better chance of catching something far nastier from one of those pigeons in Trafalgar Square than you do any rat. Besides, I like them. Mosquitoes though, nah.. neither use nor ornament! Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: GUEST Date: 25 Jan 05 - 09:37 AM The example of 'incongruous' words that always springs to my mind is that load of 'IHate All Men' garbage about the slaughter of the witches where the number of women killed by the Inquisition quoted is something like ten times the total population of Europe at the time ! Or perhaps 'The Alamo' - with 'Young ' Davy Crockett laughing and dying !! - Young ?? For crying out loud !! |

Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Bill Hahn//\\ Date: 25 Jan 05 - 06:12 PM When watching the 11 O'clock News the usual line by neighbors is---"...he was a quiet fellow---very nice". I think it is a tape that they just replay like every baseball season on radio. Bill Hahn |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Charley Noble Date: 25 Jan 05 - 06:27 PM See the new thread about "Armstrong Tourist Rest Home" for some incongruous words. This thread provoked me into finally transcribing them from the record. Cheerily, Charley Noble |

Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: GUEST Date: 26 Jan 05 - 08:19 AM "'Twas on Good Friday morning, all in the month of May..." Oh yeah, since when?? |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: GUEST Date: 26 Jan 05 - 08:28 AM True - it was, in fact, April 16th, methinks. Still, it beats "It was early in the month of Spring"! Regards |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: GUEST,Puffenkinty Date: 26 Jan 05 - 09:34 AM I never understood the "moral" in the song "Dinah and Villikens". "It's better by far to die and grow cold Than to marry a suitor for silver and gold." Since When???? |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Liz the Squeak Date: 26 Jan 05 - 10:24 AM What about currying those horses? And just how do you let a toast go free? (Yes, I know how to curry a horse, and it's nothing to do with Indian cuisine) LTS |

Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Teresa Date: 26 Jan 05 - 03:50 PM It's a song Andy irvine does; sorry I don't remember the name and only heard on radio and in concert: "She procured a pair of pistols on the ground where she did stand." She was lucky. Teresa |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Gurney Date: 27 Jan 05 - 03:44 AM Nah, Liz, it isn't often that I disagree with you, but rats are the pits. Their habit of living in sewers, in cities anyway, makes them persona non grata in my book, their exploitation of food rubbish (or rubbish food) would be better served by the similarly inclined but far prettier black-backed gull which also won't sneak into your house and crap in your larder and eat your baby's face if there's nothing else. If there were rats on the Ark -if there WAS an Ark- they'd be like Lulu. They'd come by themselves. There are also better subjects for vivisection, but they are much more likely to get the sympathy vote, though. I did initially suggest lyrics, though. |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Dave Hanson Date: 27 Jan 05 - 03:48 AM Some great lines from the song ' Plains of the Buffalo ' If you do get homesick, and try to run away, You'll starve to death out on the plain, And also lose your pay. eric |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Les in Chorlton Date: 27 Jan 05 - 12:44 PM Rats are simply a device used by genes to make more of the same genes. (Dawkins R, relentlessly). They do not have to exist for some purpose at all, especialy one that suits people. |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: MartinRyan Date: 27 Jan 05 - 01:02 PM Teresa The song is "Willy Taylor" and sometimes she, a bit more reasonably, "produces" a pair of pistols"! Regards |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: Bert Date: 27 Jan 05 - 01:56 PM Actually rats make great pets. They are intelligent, playful and affectionate. They are soft and cuddly as well. |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Jan 05 - 03:40 PM One good thing about sewers, from a rat's point of view, is that there aren't too many human beings down there. |
Subject: RE: Incongruous words From: robomatic Date: 27 Jan 05 - 04:01 PM More from Warren Zevon: "Jungle Work": We parachute in, We parachute out, "Death from above!" We're screaming now. I'm sure it was tongue very much in cheek. |
