Subject: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Phil H Date: 07 Feb 00 - 07:14 PM I'm going to Dublin Thursday (10th Feb) til next Tuesday. Can anyone direct me to any decent sessions, I suspect the ones in the guidebooks are just paid for entertainment put on by bar owners to attract tourists & I'd rather hoped to find the real thing, or isn't that possible in the big city? Phil |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Rob-o Date: 07 Feb 00 - 10:29 PM Phil . . . I'm interested, too, as the wife and plan a trip in June. I'd appreciate your filling us Mudcats in on what you've found when you get back! |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 08 Feb 00 - 04:33 AM The most reliable place for good traditional music in Dublin is Huhghes's pub in Chancery St. Its behind the main Courthouse in Dublin (known as the "Four Courts"). Easy to find: walk about a km upriver from the city centre, on the right hand side. When you reach the courthouse (large imposing building with a dome!) - ask! Music every night - often two sessions in separate rooms. Regards |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 08 Feb 00 - 10:15 AM Make that "Hughes's pub" - and make mine a pint! Regards |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: Eric the Viking Date: 08 Feb 00 - 01:29 PM Try "Oliver St John Goggerty" in the Law courts area over the liffey bridge and turn left if you go from the north side of town. If not then walk up to the park and keep on the left hand side of it. Can't remeber the pub name but one you have gone past the park there is a major left hand turn just after the posh hotel that has good music-enjoy the greatest town in the UK. |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: Melbert Date: 08 Feb 00 - 02:39 PM Eric, are you trying to stir up trouble? Even the English don't claim Dublin as part of the UK, and Dubliners are very proud (and rightly so) of their CITY |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Phil H Date: 08 Feb 00 - 03:02 PM Thanks, at least that gives me somewhere to start. Phil |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: AKS Date: 08 Feb 00 - 03:04 PM Yes, Gogarty's (go up the stairs) in Temple Bar would be my choice, as would also Devitt's (upstairs again) on Camden St (or was it Wexford St? anyway, the one that goes from Temple Bar to Rathmines and has several names along it). slán AKS |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Petr Date: 08 Feb 00 - 03:47 PM I only spent one 2 days in Dublin last summer and would say that pubs in Temple Bar are touristy and sessions there tend to be done by paid performers and even though I joined them for some tunes its usually not done. They let me play with them for a bit but werent terribly friendly. Quite the opposite in the country though. Also, there is a web site www.sessioneer.com which has a listing of current sessions all over. pint of guinness and a packet of crisps please. Cheers Petr |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: Liam's Brother Date: 08 Feb 00 - 04:33 PM Hi Phil! Martin has steered you in the right direction towards Hughes's. If you're very keen on singing (no instruments) only, there is the Goilin Traditional Singers Club at the Trinity Pub on Pearce Street on Friday evenings. But don't go if you want to hear the flute and fiddle. In the Temple Bar area, you might stop into the Claddagh record shop. Ask the fellow behind the counter about sessions. (Johnny Moynihan was involved in 2 when I was there last March.) He can point you in the right direction. Ask him to suggest a few new CDs too! All the best, Dan Milner |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: Jon Freeman Date: 08 Feb 00 - 06:29 PM It's quite a few years since I last went over for a session in Dublin but a group of us used to go over from North Wales once or twice a year. Apart from Hughes which has already been mentioned, the other one we went to was a pub called Keatings. Jon |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: Lady McMoo Date: 08 Feb 00 - 07:00 PM Yes Hughes is good. I personally find the Gogarty a bit touristry and unfriendly. All the best mcmoo |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: paddymac Date: 13 Sep 00 - 11:45 PM I've always found "O'Sea's Merchant" on the south bank to be a delightful place. Not seisiuns, but a mix of good trad, folk and set dancing through the week. Music every night of the week, about half nine. |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Jim Dixon Date: 22 May 03 - 04:15 PM See the threads Dublin - best pubs? and Real Dublin sessions please. You will note there is some debate about whether the pubs in Temple Bar (a small district south of the Liffey) are "authentic." Undoubtedly, these places cater to tourists, but that includes Irish tourists, so they aren't too far off the mark. The advantage is, there are many pubs crowded into a small area, so it's easy to do a pub-crawl. And the area is safe at night, which isn't true everywhere in Dublin (I'm told). |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: Jim Dixon Date: 22 May 03 - 04:38 PM Wups! I posted the above message to the wrong thread. It was supposed to go in England/Ireland in August: advice?. |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,Antóin Date: 22 May 03 - 06:17 PM The Góilín Club has moved from Pearse Street to somewhere near Parnell Square. Can't remember the name of the pub (hic!). Worth finding if you want to hear unacompanied singing in various styles and way different from the touristy ballad groups. |

Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: shanty_steve Date: 23 May 03 - 05:10 AM The Goilin now meets at Tom Maye's pub at the corner of Dorset Street and North Frederick Street. Their web address is www.goilin.com |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: JennyO Date: 23 May 03 - 11:57 AM I was in Dublin in July 2001 and found a lovely friendly session going on in Gogarty's in the middle of the afternoon. They also had a CD called Gogarty's Music which I bought so that I could capture the atmosphere. I finally got to play it when I got back to Oz and was so glad I had bought it. It is one of my favourite CD's. I know where I'll be heading if I get another chance to go back to Dublin. Jenny |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: PoppaGator Date: 23 May 03 - 01:05 PM Having read "Portrait" several times (once per decade or so), I have an idea of *who* Oliver St. John Gogarty was, but have never been sure how to pronounce his name (and therefore the name of the pub). Is it "SIN-jin" or "Sin-JON"? "GO-gerty" or "go-GAR-ty"? I think I can pronounce "Oliver" well enough without help, thank you. |
Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: musicmick Date: 23 May 03 - 04:46 PM I haven't been in Dublin for over ten years. Is O'Doneghue's on Merion Row no longer in business? When I lived there, that was the center of Irish traditional music in Dublin. The sessions there were frequented by all the finest players in Ireland. Luke Kelley was a regular as were Tommy Peoples, the Furies, Paddy Keenan and the Pavies, bands like Napper Tandy and the Dubliners and an occasional immigrant like myself. There were sessions every evening in the front and back rooms and on Sunday there was a magnificent gathering in the front room that was like an all-star jam. |

Subject: RE: Real Dublin sessions please From: GUEST,JTT Date: 23 May 03 - 04:59 PM O'Donoghues is still in business, but I don't think the folkies hang out there any more. I think the management changed. |
