Subject: Lyr Add: BETWEEN TWO TREES (Charlie McKinnon) From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 01 May 01 - 11:27 AM Found at Frank White's Newfoundland Songs:
BETWEEN TWO TREES
(Written by Charlie McKinnon, popularized by Harry Hibbs.)
Between two trees, there lies a story true
Between two trees, we kissed as lovers do
And then we wed; We wed beneath two trees
Between two trees, the years have swiftly flown
Between two trees, we kissed as lovers do
Charlie McKinnon was from New Brunswisk, but that's all I've been able to discover. Harry Hibbs of Newfoundland lived from 1942-1989, and was a singer and accordion player. His album Between Two Trees was released in 1977. (Information from Canadian Music Periodical Index).
I couldn't find any information about the tune, so well done Sorcha! Malcolm |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Harry Hibbs From: Beer Date: 13 Nov 08 - 12:38 PM Nobody's Child As [D] I was slowly passing [D7] by an [G] orphan's home one day, I [A7] thought I'd stop a little while just to watch the children [D] play. Alone, a boy was [D7] standing, and [G] when I asked him why, He [A7] turned with eyes that could not see and this was his re-[D] ply. Chorus>>> I'm [G] nobody's child, [A7] nobody's [D] child. [A7] I'm like a flower, just growing [D] wild. No mommy's [D7] kisses and no [G] daddy's smiles, Nobody [A7] wants me, I'm nobody's [D] child. People come for children to take them for their own, But they seem to pass me by and why I never know. I know they want to take me, but when they see I'm Blind, They always pick some other child and I am left behind. Repeat Chorus>>> No mommy's arms to hold me and soothe me when I cry, Sometimes I feel so lonely, I wish that I could die. I'll walk the street of heaven where all the blind can see, Then I'll be like other kids, There'll be a place for me. Repeat Chorus>>> |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Harry Hibbs From: GUEST,Merle Date: 13 Nov 08 - 08:25 PM BETWEEN TWO TREES Between two trees, there lies a story true, a story true, that I will tell to you. 'Twas there that I first fell in love with Sue. Her hair was gold. Her eyes were, oh, so blue! Chorus: Between two trees, we kissed as lovers do, as lovers do, who know their love is true, we carved a heart, a heart deep in each tree, one heart for her and one heart for me. 'Twas there we wed, we wed between two trees, between two trees, we vowed 'till eternity. The trees looked down, looked down as though to say "God bless your love on this your wedding day". Between two trees, the years have swiftly flown. The years have flown. Now, I am all alone but I have my book, my book of memories of the one who sleeps. She sleeps between two trees. *Repeat Chorus* |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Between Two Trees/Nobody's Child From: GUEST Date: 04 Sep 12 - 11:34 PM Best I can tell, written by Charlie MacKinnon, (as meself figured), singer-songwriter and steel-man, born in Little Bras d'Or, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia (1919 – 1987), "Between Two Trees" was popularized by "His Nibs" Harry Hibbs, who carried his accordion and songs from Bell Island, Newfoundland (1942 – 1989) to tremendous success across Canada and the British Isles. There's some additional biographical info on MacKinnon to be found @ http://www.beatoninstitutemusic.ca/mining/when-youre-done-loading-coal.html His Grandson, Bobby Currie, released an album "A Tribute to My Grandfather" in 2003 - and it contains Currie's recording of "Between Two Trees" - http://www.bobbycurrie.ca/Discgraphy.html Today's generation of islanders now hold the torch, and the song, in an arrangement by Allison Crowe, was featured this Summer at the Gros Morne Music Festival in Theatre Newfoundland and Labrador's musical play, "Newfoundland Vinyl". Early one morning, four of the cast captured this sweet and soulful take: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151183921510719 In the video are (clockwise from front left): Jessy Rose Matthews, Miranda Power, Leah Pritchard and Stephanie Stella Payne (also on guitar). |

Versions by Charlie MacKinnon's, and his Grandson, Bobby Currie, don't appear to be on YouTube at present, but, there are several by Harry Hibbs, including this performance of "Between Two Trees" by "His Nibs": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r56JwUdUuJI And, here's bio material on Hibbs: http://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.com/articles/emc/harry-hibbs |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Between Two Trees/Nobody's Child From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Sep 12 - 01:58 PM It's a charming song. I've made a MIDI of it. It's interesting to compare the versions of it on YouTube. With Harry Hibbs, the accordion is so loud I can't hear the melody. The video where somebody (I think the first name was Poss) plays it on accordion is wonderful, but I could never transcribe the song with all those ornaments in the way. So I went with this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yb_KjfB8T1M&feature=related The singer will never win praise for his warm, resonant voice, but he makes it clear what the notes are and what the words are, and that's a good thing. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Between Two Trees/Nobody's Child From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 05 Sep 12 - 02:00 PM I should have said that I made the MIDI of 'Between Two Trees.' |
Subject: Lyr Add: BETWEEN TWO TREES (from Andrews Sisters) From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Sep 12 - 04:28 PM Apparently the attribution to McKinnon was mistaken. The song is quite a bit older than Hibbs' recording. I made this transcription from a recording found on Spotify, and I added discographical data from WorldCat and Billboard. BETWEEN TWO TREES Words and music by Virginia Walsh and Ted Johnson, © 1951. As sung by The Andrews Sisters on "The Ultimate Collection" (2009); originally released 1951 on Decca 27421. Between two trees, there lies a story true, A story true, that I will tell to you: 'Twas there that I first fell in love with you. Your hair was gold; your eyes were blue. Between two trees, we kissed as lovers do, As lovers do, who know their love is true. We carved a heart, a heart deep in each tree: A heart for you, a heart for me. And when we wed, we wed beneath the trees. Beneath the trees, we vowed eternities. The trees looked down and smiled as though to say: "God bless your love upon this wedding day." Between two trees the years have swiftly flown. The trees are bare and I am all alone. I close the book, my book of memories Of one who sleeps between two trees. |
Subject: Lyr Add: NOBODY'S CHILD (from Hank Snow) From: Jim Dixon Date: 05 Sep 12 - 05:31 PM My transcription from a recording found at Spotify: NOBODY'S CHILD Words and music by Cy Coben & Mel Foree As sung by Hank Snow and His Rainbow Ranch Boys on "Country Legends: Hank Snow" (2012); originally released as RCA Victor 21-0143 (78 rpm) and 48-0147 (45 rpm), 1949. 1. I was slowly passing an orphan's home one day, And stopped there for a moment just to watch the children play. Alone, a boy was standing, and when I asked him why, He turned with eyes that could not see and he began to cry: CHORUS: I'm nobody's child; I'm nobody's child. I'm like a flower, just growin' wild. No mommy's kisses and no daddy's smile, Nobody wants me; I'm nobody's child. 2. People come for children and take them for their own, But they all seem to pass me by and I am left alone. I know they'd like to take me, but when they see I'm blind, They always take some other child and I am left behind. 3. No mother's arms to hold me or soothe me when I cry, Sometimes it gets so lonely here, I wish that I could die. I'd walk the street of heaven where all the blind can see, And just like all the other kids, there'd be a home for me. 4. SPOKEN: I just can't seem to figure out why the folks all pass me by, 'Cause I know that it's true that God takes little blind children with him in the sky; And they tell me that I'm oh so pretty, and they seem to like my big curls of gold, But then they take some other little child and I am left here all alone. CHORUS |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Between Two Trees/Nobody's Child From: GUEST,L. Stead, B.C. Canada Date: 16 Feb 13 - 04:06 PM Can someone post the chords for "Between Two Trees" for my husband who plays guitar & writes music. Many, many thanks. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Between Two Trees/Nobody's Child From: Mick Pearce (MCP) Date: 17 Feb 13 - 11:35 AM Guest - the song can be done with just the three chords: BETWEEN TWO TREES (C)Between two trees, there lies a story (G7)true, (G7)A story true, that I will tell to (C)you. (C)'Twas there that I first fell in love with (F)Sue. (F)Her hair was (C)gold. Her (G7)eyes were, oh, so (C)blue! Chorus: (C)Between two trees, we kissed as lovers (G7)do, (G7)As lovers do, who know their love is (C)true, (C)We carved a heart, a heart deep in each (F)tree, (F)One heart for (C)her and (G7)one heart for (C)me. If you want a bit of variety, you can transition from the C to F on line 3 by inserting a C7 (at fell in the verse for example). And on the last line you can go to the G7 via Dm: (F)Her hair was (C)gold. Her (Dm)eyes were, (G7)oh, so (C)blue! Mick |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req/Add: Between Two Trees + Nobody's Child From: GUEST,Fred Isenor Date: 29 Jul 21 - 11:46 AM Charlie MacKinnon was from Little Bras d'Or, Nova Scotia and did not write Between Two Trees. It was written by Virginia Walsh & Ted Johnson and published by Southern Music Publishing Co. in Australia. The Andrews Sisters recording has the correct writer credit and I believe the first country recording by Billy Hicks in 1949 has it correct. |
