I am a fan of neither tacky pop music nor soap opera. I wish any woman a full and prompt recovery from breast cancer. I naturally wish the same to Kylie Minogue.

But surely there is good, and indeed superlative, tacky pop music and soap operas. And bottoms, for that matter. Our Kylie transcends all petty categorisation. Good luck, girl.

I've always looked at her as a very pretty, but half-tallented airhead. However, despite her lack of talent she adds colour to this world and has given a lot of pleasure to a lot of people and I do wish her the best in this.

It's easy for some of us to profess our distaste for certain popular entertainers, when we consider their work to be lackluster or lightweight, beneath our contempt.

But when a serious illness or accident, etc., strikes such a celebrity, it is immediately sobering: we realize ~ or certainly should realize ~ that this is a human being not unlike ourselves, at the mercy of fate in a manner that could happen to any one of us. Whatever we might have thought about the person's artistic output suddenly doesn't matter as much anymore.

As an American who is not especially tuned-in to popular culture, I have only a vauge idea of who Kylie is, but I realize that she's huge in the rest of the English-speaking world, and has been for years, sorta like Britney Spears here in US, except for being more established for a longer period of time.

Here's hoping that it truly is early-stage cancer and that they caught it in time to knock it right out. Like a number of others hereabouts, I'm living proof that a cancer diagnosis doesn't have to be a death sentence, and that complete recovery is not only possible, but it is becoming more and more common every year. The treatment can be pretty debilitating, though ~ Ms. Minogue will undoubtedly be resting quietly for the next several months. Good luck to her and her loved ones.

Ms Minogue's music is most definately not MY bag , though I do think there are a lot of less attractive ladies involved in music . She sigs in tune and moves VERY nicely , so I wish her a good resolution of the situation !

Me too. I am no lover of her music, but having had personal experience of this in the last 6 months, I know how it is going to affect her, and I wish her all the best. No amount of money can help when this happens to you. And sad to say there is no such thing as 'full recovery'. It's about time they put more effort into finding out why the incidence rate is rising so fast.

And the point of this tread?

Discussing the health of someone who's music style is about as far away from what most people in the Mudcat have an interest in is an odd thing. Yes, let's all wish her well; but is that because we can't wish all people who are ailing well and so we stick to famous people with our wishes (outside of friends and family, of course)?

She's lucky she's wealthy. She can get the best treatments available. Would that the millions of women who contract breast cancer in the Third World get something close to that attention. Hell, forget the Third World. Try the millions of Americans who do not have & cannot afford health insurance but are too "well off" to qualify for Medicade.

Irrelevant Blackcatter I think,

This thread had been started in good faith and is simply about compassion and sympathy whether the person is famous or not or whether she is part of our genre or not.

If we take your argument we may as well obliterate all the BS threads.

Peace

moo

Amen Moo. And I hope she makes a full and speedy recovery. She's a bundle of energy who's made a modest amount of talent go a very long way, and she's brought pleasure into the lives of millions.
Fight it girl, we're with you.

I'm not saying wishing her well is wrong. I'm just trying to figure out why people feel the need to wish famous people well, even if they aren't interested in them in general.

I like to think it is human nature to wish anyone well who is ill regardless of creed colour or wealth, and most certainly the type of music has nothing to do with it at all.

Sounds a bit like sour grapes blackcatter.

I like Kylie and so do my wife daughters. I like folk music and have just started my club up again. I like most music including todays stuff.

I posted this because I can relate to what she is going through at this moment in time, having had cancer myself and survived. In fact I have to go back on Friday for my yearly check up and I dread it in case they say it is back. A year and a half ago my mother aged 88 had a month to live with cancer. They saved her and she is still alive.

It has to be one of the worst feelings in the world to be told you have cancer. It turns your life upside down.

How the treatment is paid for and how quickly it is done is another subject and nothing to do with this thread.

I saw her do a two hour show at Earls Court, whilst I was accompanying a wheel chair using relative. She didnt lip synch, she hit every note and she put on a fantastic show. She lives in Holland Park, she chats to the neighbours and shop keepers like human beings and she signs autographs for any kids waiting outside.

If only some bitter amateurs had half her grace they would be blessed.

Wishing her all the luck in the world.

Blackcatter..

you made your point,
that i mostly agree with, in your first post here..

so why do you feel the need to bang on about it repetively ?

Kylie is an icon of 21'st century culture..

are any of us Blackcatter ??

for 20 years she has generated much positivity and fun in our dreary nasty world..

..and she's no less talented than many of us hasbeens
and deluded wannabes in our own petty little folk entertainment world.

Last year I lost a very close relative to breast cancer
and the painfull and deabilitating suffering of the supposedly 'curative' medical treatment and surgereries..

..and our family has as much right as any to feel bitter
about the pitiful competence of UK NHS Drs and hospitals..

our response is to feel sad to hear that any woman is dignosed
with this illness at such a young age..

and Btw.. how are any of us in a position to know
if Kylie has a private love of Aussie trad folk or not..

who knows what she'd be singing 20 odd years from now
if she's fortunate enough to survive..???

Well, I never would have made it a point to publicly wish Kylie Minogue well had this thread not been opened. Like others, undoubtedly, my first reaction was "what does she have to do with what we are all about?," and then I wrote a little something trying to make sense of my reaction.

I fully endore Blackcatter's comments about the various injustices around the world in regard to the availability of medical care. You don't have to be wealthy or a celebrity to luck out on that score ~ as a currently-employed lower-middle-class American with fairly standard HMO coverage, I was lucky enough to enjoy state-of-the-art treatment for my tonsillar cancer last year ~ but it's certainly true, and relevant, that plenty of folks around the world are not so lucky.

Of course, he needn't have seemed quite so mean-spirited in his comments, but he certainly was not out of line...

I would like to add my best wishes to Kylie.

I hope this doesn't sound out of place, but maybe her diagnosis might get more women to be breast cancer aware. It IS treatable if caught in time.

I didn't intend to appear "mean-spirited." Sorry about that.

As for: "bang on about it repetively?"

I posted three times - the 2nd & 3rd time to respond to someone.

It just seems odd that so many comments above start with:

"I am a fan of neither tacky pop music nor soap opera."
"very pretty, but half-tallented airhead."
"I have only a vauge idea of who Kylie is, but I realize that she's huge in the rest of the English-speaking world, and has been for years, sorta like Britney Spears here in US, except for being more established for a longer period of time."
"Ms Minogue's music is most definately not MY bag"
"Hope she is back lip-syncing and healthy very soon."
"I am no lover of her music,"

I, for one, wish that all people who are ill get better. I also wish that everyone who is ill would have equal access to quality healthcare.

Well she did sing with Nick Cave on his very traditionally styled murder ballad 'Where the Wild Roses Grow'... I for one am a fan of her music and of course wish her the very best.
