The schedule is up for the 2007 Washington Folk Festival at Glen Echo MD June 2 & 3. I heard last night that there will be 500 performers, some really recruited from the field. Musicians from Indonesia, Iran, Turkmenistan, Bosnia....and a "bunch" of Mudcatters. And then there are the crafts...I'm looking forward to my annual trip to Ferrara's booth. This festival, in 2000, was my introduction to the FSGW and the entire world of folk music in the Washington DC area.

Work to put the festival together physically is happening now. I'm coordinating the volunteers and I am looking for people who want to help, before, after, or during the festival. Please use the link or PM me if you want to volunteer.

This past weekend the tents were washed. On Saturday May 19 and the next day these BIG tents will go up and more people are needed. It's really fun to be part of the group effort of raising TONS of canvas. At the festival, you look up at the huge white tent over the Bulgarian folk group or Hula dancers and feel so proud, "I helped erect that pole - I tied (after 17 unsuccessful tries) that perfect clove-hitch knot!!"

During the festival you can help with greeting and helping the public, supporting the stages, welcoming the musicians, collecting donations, and making the Festival run smoothly. And if you just sign up to chop carrots to make soup for feeding the performers, you don't have to miss a single note...

Ohboy. I can't wait. I love this Festival!

Hmmmmmm??? Not much blues... I played it last year with the Archie Edwards Blues Foundation...

...but Rick Franklin will a gopod job with what little time the blues is being alloted this year...

And I'm flying in on the 4th. RATS! Can't be helped though, I've got a friend's Memorial and a gig on Saturday, and a friend staying over that evening. Even if I headed down Sunday I wouldn't get there in time for all of the fun. BOTHER!!

The Archie Edwards Blues Foundation folks will be doing a lot of stuff at the Washington Folk Festival. The actual Barbershop jam will be for an hour on Sunday, plus there are six different groups --friends of the Barbershop-- playing on either Saturday or Sunday. Also probably some people planning on casual jamming around the park.

The soup is usually vegetable soup! (something for everybody...)

Leadfingers & Mary, hope you'll find time to visit with us at our booth in the crafts market (Bumper Car Pavilion). We are in charge of the crafts as well as selling our crafts there so we don't get away to see much of the festival!

Well, I'll be sure to attend the Joe Glazer tribute at 3:15 Saturday (hard to believe he was gone just a few months after performing at last year's WFF).

I seem to recall the Saturday program going until 11 PM in recent years, but according to the schedule it wraps up at 7 this time around.

The evening schedule will be shorter this year due to financial considerations...(cost of paying park staff/security...etc...) The park is under a different management system now, and since we rely only on donations, and not a straight admission fee, we couldn't be sure of raising the extra money.

It 'may' be that we have a solution to that situation for the future, but it did not develop in time to plan for this year.

Refreshing this thread -   Leadfingers and I will be there on Saturday - probably will plan to arrive at opening time and will stick around till closing.   Are there any scheduled sessions? If so, we'd like to be there!

no 'sessions' as such, but there will be lots of impromteau music all day in the picnic grounds of Glen Echo...(Right in the middle of the activities...this is not a big park)
Friday night there will be an 'open sing' in the same general part of the Maryland area...if you are around then.

Get there as early as possible, as late arrivals will need to park at a more distant lot and ride a (free) bus.....this is really easy to do...all marked and clear.

We would love to go to the open sing, but we'll be performing at The Blarney Stone in Fredericksburg tonight. The plan is to get up early and head out from Richmond at a reasonable time in order to get there early and park close by - we'll have some instruments in tow!

It's a wonderful festival - I'm sorry we couldn't make it this year, but baby Kiran is just too young. Enjoy the music, dance and good-times, and don't forget to stop by the Bumper Car Pavilion to see what Bill Day and Rita Ferrara, among others, have created! (Bring your checkbooks.)

The old expression that you learn something new every day is definitely accurate. I'd heard recordings of the song "Kilkelly, Ireland" by Laura Burns & Roger Rosen - and by Seamus Kennedy - and (if memory serves) Liam Clancy. But I had no idea that it was actually written by a Washington, DC area artist until today's Joe Glazer tribute session at the WFF.

Prior to performing the song, Peter Jones (who I'd never heard of prior to today) told the fascinating story of how he came to compose it.

Well we had a great day , caught GutBucketeer's band and Mary LaMarca
who I knew of but had never heard in real ! Also got some good jamming in and had a wander around with Sev ! The atmosphere over the whole Festival area was excellent and it was really nice to renew acquaintance with a lot of people I had met at the Getaway .

Today (Sunday) was a lot wetter! I didn't see much once my band was done, bacause I didn't have any acoustic instruments and didn't want to wander in the rain, so I left.

Due to a minor family emergency on Sunday I didn't get there till 2:30. Caught for the first time, Flory Jagoda and her troupe doing those lovely Spanish/Bosnian/Sephardic melodies and rhythms. I think I finally "get" 7/8. There was the amazing Rapper Sword troupe complete with back-flips, a great guitar workshop, with explanations, Judy Cook (who was up against the Sunshine Skiffle Band) with her usual presence and delivery -- good harmonizing from the audience. And the Sunshine Skiffle Band itself, with not one, but TWO musical saws, closing out with a whomp! What a day. Completely different from Saturday.

Different event, SRS - the Washington Folk Festival is held at Glen Echo Park, a former amusement park and current arts center. The tragedy you're referring to happened at Unifest, a church-sponsored festival in the Anacostia neighborhood.

We were at the Williamsburg do for Elizabeth LaPrelle in the rain , but a VERY good lttle Festival then headed down to the Shore to Chincoteague (sp) and wandered round the nature reserve in glorious sunshine after the mornings rain had cleared
