Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: The Shambles Date: 26 Nov 00 - 12:24 PM No it is a different song. It has the last line of 'Just to be with my Colly Malone'. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: The Shambles Date: 26 Nov 00 - 12:33 PM Not too sure about what the spelling should be. Don't think it's about a breed of dog though? It may be about being in love with a prize winning vegtable? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: Noreen Date: 26 Nov 00 - 12:48 PM *BG* Had me puzzled there a minute, Shambles. It's not a mishearing of Colm alone is it? Never heard it myself, but that's never stopped me having an opinion before... Noreen |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: The Shambles Date: 27 Nov 00 - 10:51 AM This is bothering me now. A couple of people I know, play this one, it can't be that obscure surely? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: GUEST,Russ Date: 27 Nov 00 - 12:20 PM It's "Colleen Malone." Not in Digitrad. Popular among Bluegrassers. For example Tim O'Brien sings a great version on Hot Rize's "Take it Home" (Sugar Hill 3784). |
Subject: Lyr Add: COLLEEN MALONE (Goble & Drumm) From: Malcolm Douglas Date: 27 Nov 00 - 01:08 PM Armed with Russ's information, I was able to find the following, at musicpotential.com:
COLLEEN MALONE
(Written by Pete Goble & LeRoy Drumm)
It's been ten years and three since I first went to sea
On the day I returned to my sorrow I learned
As the soft breezes blow through the meadow I go
She was faithful each day as I sailed far away
(chorus)
All the years of my life I will not take a wife
(chorus) |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: GUEST,Russ Date: 27 Nov 00 - 01:11 PM Thanks Malcolm, Whatta team! |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Nov 00 - 07:33 PM Did you say there's a dog parody of Molly Malone in the DT? Well the DT gives me Connection Refused when I try top go to the DT, like so many things about the Mudcat these last few days.(I DEMAND A RECOUNT) Anyway, there should be a dog parody of the song - here's a start, in case there isn't one already.
In Dublin's fair city There's a pavement that's slippy Where I first set my feet on where Colly Malone Had had this great notion, Of passing a motion That set my feet slipping and tripping so low. A-tripping so lo-ow - That dog's got to go-o! I'll strangle that mongrel called Colly Malone.

In Dublin's fair city |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: Snuffy Date: 27 Nov 00 - 07:48 PM Kevin If you get Connection refused, just go into the Address Bar at the top and change "www" (or "shorty") to "loki" and then you'll get in. Loki seems to be the only one that's working - I think the others have come out in protest at the bad treatment the media have handed out to their cousind in Florida! Wassail! V |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: Snuffy Date: 27 Nov 00 - 07:56 PM Not quite as easy as I said. I changed shorty to loki and got a mudcat header and the message Connection Error (shorty, ragtime and www all give a flat "Connection Refused"). But it also has a Super Search box - I clicked Go and that brought up both the DT and the forum. It's a bloody long-winded way to go about it, but with a bit of persistence you can still find things. Wassail! V |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 27 Nov 00 - 07:57 PM Earlier today loki wasn't working either, nor was shorty, nor was ragtime, so I tried the "help", which I've also got as a favourite. And that gave me a Connection Refused as well.
I hope to many people aren't giving up on the mudcat, or jumping out of windows because they can't get through.

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: Ebbie Date: 28 Nov 00 - 12:45 AM Since I know so little about it, would someone indulge me on 'Dublin's fair city'. In Cockles and Mussels it says the same thing. Dublin is a city, right? So why...? Or is Dublin a county also and it's talking about some other town? I've learned not to mind letting my ignorance show- I just don't like the ignorance! Ebbie |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Nov 00 - 05:34 AM Dublin's a city and it's a county as well, which is bigger than the city. Like New York really. And of course it's also referred to as Dublin Town. (It depends what sort of rhytme you are looking for...)
|
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: The Shambles Date: 28 Nov 00 - 05:43 AM On the subject of rhymes. I thought that the rhyme of city with slippy, was a bit of a cop-out? *Smiles* Or were you just leaving it as bait, for someone to tackle the the next verse?
|
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 28 Nov 00 - 06:27 AM A cop-out? Not really, it's playing with the expectations of any listeners. They think they'll get "shitty" and instead they get "slippy" - and then later maybe you might use "shitty" which would by then be a surprise, precisely because it hadn't been used before. In a way the effect is one of reimposing an eroded taboo, and then breaking it.
Two for the price of one.
How'd that for a retriospective rationale? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: The Shambles Date: 28 Nov 00 - 08:32 AM Pretty slippy. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: Crazy Eddie Date: 15 Jan 01 - 11:59 PM Hi Ebbie, Cockles & Mussels, is actually the song Molly Malone. "Cockles & Mussels is a repeated line in the refrain, so people often think it is the name of the song. Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, & Kilkenny are all Counties, AND Cities. In England, they have a similar habit, but they tend to distinguish the City from the County by adding "Shire" to the County name: thus you have Leicester (the City) & Leicestershire (the county). Of Course, while you still have York (The city) Yorkshire is now adminintered as several counties. This is done to confuse visitors :o) Eddie

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: GUEST,Fibula Mattock Date: 16 Jan 01 - 11:53 AM Dublin is known as the "Fair City" (though I don't know the origins of this), much like Derry is the "Maiden City" (that one I do know - it's because her walls were never breached). The <SARCASM>innovative, brilliant and entertaining</SARCASM> Irish soap opera "Fair City" is all about Dublin. So no one bothers watching it. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: collie maloane From: Ebbie Date: 09 May 02 - 10:05 PM Well, now then. Curiouser and curiouser. This thread is refreshed, evidently, but no such notation was made. 'Twasn't me, or I, either. But now that it's open, I'd like to remark that 'Colleen Malone' is a totally different song from 'Molly Malone'. Though they may have been sisters. :)

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Colleen Malone / Colly Malone From: SharonA Date: 10 May 02 - 09:49 AM Refreshing this thread in order to put "Colleen Malone" in the Subject line, in case anyone ever looks for the song using a Forum Search. Okay, so we have lyrics posted here, but what's the tune? Does a MIDI of it exist anywhere on the 'net? I went to the www.musicpotential.com site and found a chord progression for the song, but that's all. It is: VERSE: 1 - 4 - 1 - 6m 4 - 2 - 5 - 5 1 - 4 - 1 - 6m 4 - 5 - 1 - 1 CHORUS: 5 - 5 - 4 - 1 4 - 1 - 5 - 5 5 - 5 - 4 - 1 4 - 5 - 1 - 1 Here's a link to the page with lyrics and chord progression: http://www.musicpotential.com/SONGS/BLUEGRASS%20SONGS/Bluegrass%20Songs%20(C-D)#anchor1702122 |
