-Joe Offer- Can you suggest any songs associated with the month of October ie: (A) Any songs with October in the title (B) Any songs with an October date given in the lyrics (C) Any songs referencing an event that is known to have occurred in October even if the lyrics do not actually say so. It would be very helpful to have links to performances of the songs and also more sources of information about them. This is an edited PermaThread moderated by Geoff Lawes. Below is an alphabetical index of the titles collected in this thread so far. If a title in this index is clicked then you should be jumped to the section of the thread in which most of the discussion and links for that title occurs. If you just want to add a new post to this thread use the “Post to this thread” or POST buttons to jump to the end of the thread. I shall sometimes rearrange “ late” posts to group them with the appropriate main area of discussion so that they are not overlooked. When I add to someone’s post I make this clear by doing so beneath an orange line like the one below. - Regards, GeoffLawes INDEX OF OCTOBER SONGS

"Are you my father the king" she said "Are you my brother John Or are you my truelove William From Scotland coming home?" "I'm not your father the king" he said "I'm not your brother John But I am your truelove William From Scotland I've returned?" "Margaret, Lady Margaret" he said "In love, in charity Will you give me back the plighted troth That once, love, I gave thee." "No I'll not give you back your plighted troth Nor any other thing Until you take me to your father's house Where oft-times I have have been." He's taken her to his father's house And as they did enter in The gates swung open at their own free will To let young William in. "Margaret, Lady Margaret" he said "In love, in charity Will you give me back the plighted troth That once, love, I gave thee." "No I'll not give you back your plighted troth Nor any other thing Until you take me to the chapel hall And marry me with a ring." He's taken her to the chapel hall And as they did enter in The locks flew asunder at their own free will To let young William in. "Margaret, Lady Margaret" he said "In love, in charity Will you give me back the plighted troth That once, love, I gave thee." She took the cross from around her neck And laid it on his breast Saying "Take you back your plighted troth And in Heaven your soul find rest." Silent stood the red red cock But loudly called the grey "It is time for the living to depart the dead And so you must away." From: The Sandman Date: 16 Sep 21 - 07:42 AM HALLOWEEN by The Singing Postman The Singing Postman – Halloween https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-ogTQqP6NQ Some folks say by the light of the day They don't believe tha's true That folks will roam, far from their home And the witches make their brew Dew you go where the lights are low They don't seem quite so keen And they don't dare, go anywhere On the night of Hallowe'en. Now we all go down to the old churchyard I dust you go inside You're not far from the old hall beyond Where the headless horsemen ride Then you prick those doors seven times And I know that you will scream When the devil pops his head out the top On the night of Hallowe'en. Ghosts don't like nobody They all make awful cries They weep and moan, grunt and groan And they don't like exorcise See them walk through the castle walls As though there's nothin' between So don't you stray, too far away On the night of Hallowe'en. Now we all know Shuck he's a rare old dog He likes to prowl around Waiting for, down on the shore The master who was drowned His hair is black, his teeth are red His eyes oh how they gleam If he gets you, it's toodle-oo On the night of Hallowe'en |

Subject: RE: Any October Songs? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Sep 21 - 01:32 PM Another "Hallowe'en" - from the poem by Violet Jacob, set to music by Jim Reid, and here sung by Sheena Wellington and Karine Polwart: it refers to the poet losing her son, Lachlan in WW1. Absolutely haunting. Hallowe'en (Violet Jacob) HALLOWE'EN words by Violet Jacob (1920) Music, Jim Reid. The tattie-liftin's nearly through, They're plooin' whaur the barley grew And efter dark roond ilka stack You'll see the horsemen stand and crack O Lachlan, but I mind on you. I mind fu' aften we hae seen Ten thoosand stars keek doon atween. The naked branches, and below Baith fairm and bothy hae their show A-low wi' lichts o' Hallowe'en. There's bairns wi' guys that's at their tail Cloorin' the doors wi' runts o' kail And fine you'll hear the screechs an' skirls O' lassies wi' their drookit curls Bobbin' for aipples i' the pail. The bothy fire is loupin' heat. A new heid-horseman's kist is set. Richt's o'er the lamp whaur by the blaze The auld yin stood that kept yer claes. I cannae thole tae see it yet. But gin the auld folks' tales are richt An' ghaists cam hame on Hallow'n nicht, Oh freend, oh freends, what would I gie Tae feel yer rax yer hand tae me Atween the dark an' coral licht! Awa' in France across the wave, The wee lichts burn on ilka grave An' you an' me their lowes hae seen. Ye'll maybe hae yer Hallowe'en Yont whaur you're lyin' wi’ the lave. There's drink an' daff an' sang an' dance, An' ploys an' kisses get their chance, But Lachlan, man, the place I see Is whaur yer auld kist used tae be, An' the lichts o' Hallowe'en in France. Subject: RE: Any October Songs? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Sep 21 - 01:42 PM Another favourite, by Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem, Tommy having written the song. The Grey October Clouds THE GREY OCTOBER CLOUDS Tommy Makem The summer birds have gathered on their journey to the sun, I saw the wild geese heading South on their October run, The last crop has been harvested and all the work is done, And the grey October clouds go drifting by. Chorus Drifting by, drifting by, and the grey October clouds go drifting by. At summer dawns I walked along by silver singing streams, The lark song filled the early morn, and I could dream my dreams, The good times passed so quickly, that was long ago it seems, And the grey October clouds go drifting by………….. Chorus In memory’s field my fancies ran, wild flowers can be seen On every hill and valley and meadows in between, The leaves of brown came tumbling down from trees that once were green, And the grey October clouds go drifting by……………… Chorus In the summer of our lifetime, the skies seemed always blue, We’d dream our dreams with youthful thoughts and hope that they’d come true, Believe in all your youthful dreams and they’ll live on for you, And the grey October clouds go drifting by………………… Chorus x 2 |

Subject: RE: Any October Songs? From: Tattie Bogle Date: 16 Sep 21 - 01:53 PM And for anyone doing kids' Hallowe'en parties, here are a couple more less serious songs! 1. HALLOWE'EN (From Music Time for Brownies) Tonight is the night when dead leaves fly Like witches and switches across the sky When elf and sprite flit through the night Om a moony sheen, on a moony sheen. Tonight is the night when leaves do sound Like gnomes in their homes far beneath the ground, When spooks and trolls creep out of holes, Dark and mossy green, dark and mossy green. Tonight is the night when pumpkins stare Through brown sheaves and leaves almost everywhere, When ghoul and ghost and goblin host Dance round their queen, for it’s Hallowe’en. (Suggested accompaniment for this is a spooky “wobble board”! or gentle use of a “thunder tube” might work) The whole thing can be accompanied by a drone in A or B minor. Can supply the tune if anyone wants it. 2. THE HALLOWE’EN QUARTERMASTER Trish Santer 24.10.06. (You'll know the tune for this one, I guess!) There were witches, witches, wearing stripy britches In the stores, in the stores, There were witches, witches, wearing stripy britches In the quartermaster’s stores. Chorus My eyes are dim , I cannot see, I have not brought my specs with me, I have not brought my specs with me. There were rats, rats, big as tiger cats, etc. There were spiders, spiders, drinking pints of cider, etc. There were wizards, wizards, eating chicken gizzards, etc. There were bats, bats, we were wearing them as hats, etc. There were ghouls, ghouls, playing with garden tools, etc There were pumpkins, pumpkins, brought in by some numpties, etc. There were brooms, brooms, flying round the room, etc There were ghosts, ghosts, bumping into posts, etc |

From: Tattie Bogle Date: 18 Sep 21 - 07:06 PM In answer to Geoff Lawes, no that's not Jim Reid singing in the YouTube link you gave: it's Daniel Kelly (as it says in the script accompanying the video!!) and he does make a nice job of it, though he has a deeper voice than Jim's. You might like this track of Jim singing: the songs are seasonal anyway and include what is perhaps his best-known setting of a Violet Jacob poem - Norland Wind (aka The Wild Geese): Jim Reid songs |

I'll have a look through my Jim Reid CDs to see if I can find it. |

Subject: RE: Any October Songs? From: GerryM Date: 22 Sep 21 - 03:18 AM THREE JOLLY COACHMEN also known as LANDLORD,FILL THE FLOWING BOWL has a stanza that goes, Here's to the man who drinks water pure and goes to bed quite sober. Here's to the man who drinks water pure and goes to bed quite sober. He falls as the leaves do fall, He falls as the leaves do fall, He falls as the leaves do fall, He'll die before October! (Ho! Ho! Ho!) Recording by The Kingston Trio. |
Subject: RE: Any October Songs? From: GeoffLawes Date: 22 Sep 21 - 05:51 AM LANDLORD FILL THE FLOWING BOWL Many recordings of Landlord Fill The Flowing Bowl on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Come+Landlord+Fill+the+Flowing+Bowl Come Landlord fill the flowing bowl Until it doth run over, Come landlord fill the flowing bowl Until it doth run over,
CHORUS For tonight we'll merry merry be
The man who drinketh small beer And goes to bed quite sober,
The man who drinketh strong beer And goes to bed right mellow,
But he who drinks just what he likes And getteth half seas over,
The man who kisses a pretty girl And goes and tells his mother,
The maiden who enjoys a kiss and comes back for another,
Come into the garden Maud And don't be so particular,
If I had a pile of bricks I'd build my chimney higher. |
