NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- Jerry Reed, a singer who appeared in the "Smokey and the Bandit" movies, has died of complications from emphysema at age 71, his longtime booking agent said Tuesday.

Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Jerry Reed was known for his roles in Burt Reynolds films.

Carrie Moore-Reed, who is no relation to the star, said Reed died early Monday morning.

Reed was a gifted guitarist who later became a songwriter, singer and actor.

As a singer in the 1970s and early 1980s, he had a string of hits that included "Amos Moses," "When You're Hot, You're Hot," "East Bound and Down," and "The Bird."

In the mid-1970s, he began acting in movies such as "Smokey and the Bandit" with Burt Reynolds, "Gator" "Hot Stuff" and "High-Ballin'."

I have an old LP featuring Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed just "foolin' around," as only they could. They were obviously enjoying jamming with each other, improvising as they went. It comes close to a sort of country jazz. Jerry Reed was considered a prodigious talent and highly respected among the Nashville music crowd, especially his fellow instrumentalists. But, he'll probably be better remembered by most folks for "Amos Moses," "When You're Hot, You're Hot" and the Burt Reynolds films, all of which showed his down-home humor and hearty laugh to good advantage. I loved the guitar work, as I'm sure many others do. That's my memory of him. R.I.P., Ol' Buddy.

I understood he was Chet Atkin's son-in-law.
Got lots of his stuff, loved him for his attack and jokey attitude, also his revitalization of Phil Harris material.Not to mention the fact he was an excellent picker with an original approach. Liked his movies, he never seemed to take 'em too seriously. Jerry, you'll be missed.

Man I am so sickened to hear of another hero of mine has passed. I was fortunate to meet Jerry on several occasions and he was not only a great musician and actor but a great person as well. Jerry was just as witty and jovial as he was portrayed on tv. He had a zest for life that I wish I could muster. I am very saddened to be writing this right now. I will miss Jerry but I am thankful for the music he made and the vision of what was possible. Jerry changed my playing around the minute I heard Jerry's Breakdown. I remember siiting in Paul Yandell's mothers living room and Paul tearing into that song. I about flipped man I was totallu tore up by it. I had just turned 17 and that time only knew Jerry from Smokey and the Bandit. I remember how alive his songs sounded to me back then. I met him a year later in Nashville with Paul. He and Chet Atkins were prepping to record I think Neck and Neck was the title. Paul introduced us and he was the coolest and funniest person. He laughed so hard with his whole body into it. I have a ton of stories from the few times I met him but Jerry was that way. He was the kind of person that had something going or was saying something constantly. If you hung out with him for an hour it was like a whole day with someone else. I know this is long but I am really saddened to hear of Jerry's passing. I found out from Paul yesterday and he had been to see Jerry over the weekend. I am deeply saddened and will miss the Alabama Wildman.

No I think the CD was Sneaking Around. Neck to Neck was Chet and Mark Knopfler I think. Does anyone on here know for sure. Also Chet and Jerry did a show together on TNN (the nashville network) called The American Music Workshop. On it they did an incredible version of Summertime. My personal favorite Reed tune was Stumpwater. Funny though that is one I never learned to play. I know several of Jerry's tunes but that one I never did learn.

Jerry Reed's hits--which is all I know about him--were a lot of fun. "Lord, Mr. Ford" is an absolute classic. Ditto for "When You're Hot, You're Hot". His guitar work was amazing.

Jerry Reed was one of those people who just had to be. As the old saying goes, if he hadn't been there you'd have had to invent him. Country Music needed Jerry as much as he needed to pick and tell endlessly bad jokes and tales.

Karen and I were just talking about him Sunday..............There was a certain style, sound, and even type of song, that was a Jerry Reed song or style or sound.................

My favorite on was when we met. My brother is 3 and 1/2 yrs younger than me and he and I were running arounf the hotel being ignorant as usual. We got up on the top floor and you could see all around the hotel. Well Joey (my brother) popped his head out from the edge and saw the bar right beneath us. We could make out a couple sitting at the bar and the man was wearing a bright blue jacket. Well we were (still are I guess) a mischevious duo and I dared Joey to see if he could float a leaf down into this persons drink. No need for anyone to tell me how rude this was because I knew then and I know now lol. Well Joey pops his head back up leaf in hand and sends it floating. We both saw it land a few inches from the womans drink. The man looks up at us really quickly and we jumped back behind the ledge and laughed. Well a few minutes passed and here we go again. This time he got it closer to the drink and the man in the coat looked up again. This time the bartender yells out "Hey!". Well we lit out of there and made our way downstairs to the lobby. A few minutes after we got into the lobby here comes Paul Yandell walking up to us with the man in the coat. It was Jerry Reed I about croaked right then and there. I told Jerry about that several years later and he had a serious laugh about it. The last time I saw him was after a gig he did in Ownesboro Kentucky. Jerry was (like all thumbpickers) a fan of Mose Rager. I was there with Mose's daughter and we hung out with him after the show. She had brought him some pictures of Mose with different guys like Chet Atkins, Merle Travis, Lenny Breau, I think there was one of him and Mose but I am not sure about that. She also gave him some tapes she and I had put together of Mose sitting around the house picking. I remember he and I talked about a symphony of guitars all playing the stars and stripes forever just like an orchestra. I wanted acoustics involved and he didnt lol. Actually he shot me down when I mentioned resonators lol. Jerry was a great guy and a tremendous talent. He made an impression and a half on me. One that will last the rest of my life. JR Hubbard was a true gift. Thanks for letting me bring up memories I haven't thought of in yrs. It is sad that it seems it takes events like this to bring back such great memories. Memories that you should be thankful for everyday.

Jerry Reed was the consummate performer. He was a great guitarist, song writer and singer. One of my favorites is Amos Moses. Another is East Bound and Down from Smokey and the Bandit. He was good to his fans and also to veterans. We will miss you. God rest your soul.

Of course, he wrote/recorded US Male and Guitar Man which Elvis recorded; infact, I think he played guitar on Elvis's version of Guitar Man. One of my favourite tracks/compositions by Jerry is humous Tupelo Mississippi Flash.

La Madrugada is another beautiful piece of music Jerry wrote. That was the 2nd song of his I ever learned. The 1st was The Claw (of course lol) Jerry's Breakdown was the 3rd.... you get my point lol. Jerry is one of the few people I can tell you what order I learned thier songs in. I was doing a gig about 2 weeks ago with my cousin Alonzo Pennington. We broke out an impromtu version of Amos Moses. It was funny the crowd was all in thier early to mid 20s and they all broke out yelling and singing along. I never dreamed they knew it but they did. When I 1st met Jerry he looked bad very bad. I didn't think he would make it another year or two tops. Then it was a while before I saw him again. When I did he looked great. He had gained weight and got his color back I was happy to see it. He was a very special person one that I will miss very badly.
