I'm was wondering if anyone knew off the top of their heads when the following oft-recorded ballads were first recorded and by whom. I'm in the process of researching the stuff, but if anyone could help me out or point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.

Stagolee Frankie and Albert (or Johnny) Casey Jones Any of the variously named Titanic ballads Butcher's Boy

thanks everybody, tomtom

Stagolee-- Missisippi John Hurt (who I think appears as "John Smith Hurt" on the record label 1927

Frankie and Johnnie-- race between Charlie Poole (who sings the wacky "when the winter wind begins to blow, the ground is covered up" version Columbia 1928 and Dykes Magic City Trio in 1927. There may be some earlier blues recordings but I don't know them

Casey Jones-- no help there sorry

Titanic-- Ernest V. Stoneman, Victor 1926. Down with the Old Canoe-- Dixon Brothers 1935 or so

All this is from the jellyware memory bank, my reference books are at home.

PETE
