Subject: Obit: Gerry Squirrell. From: Rusty Dobro Date: 31 Jul 26 - 08:38 AM I understand that Gerry Squirrell, for many years a stalwart of the Suffolk folk scene, has passed away. Even in advanced old age, he was a frequent visitor to acoustic evenings far and wide, arriving on a rather scary motor scooter, and later in a Smart car, which was always guaranteed a parking space as no-one wanted to be too close when he reversed out! He was a true eccentric, performing on sax and clarinet with alarming results when the reeds misbehaved, but genuinely respected for his word-perfect recall for lengthy poetry such as ‘If’ and ‘The Highwayman’, and the monologues of Marriott Edgar. He owned a motorcycle workshop specialising in vintage machinery, and had raced extensively in grass-track in earlier years - he was particularly disdainful of any song that added non-existent keys and pillion seat to a Vincent Black Lightning…… I suppose we knew that he couldn’t be with us for ever, but he will certainly be much missed by those of us who knew him. |

Subject: RE: 2026 Obit: Gerry Squirrell. From: Waddon Pete Date: 07 Aug 26 - 10:57 AM Now that is sad news. Gerry was one of life's great characters. He was very loyal to the folk clubs and sessions he frequented. He must have clocked up quite a mileage as whenever you went to a session, Gerry would be there adding his contribution to the evening. When the god's were with him, he could play wonderfully well. When the reeds misbehaved they sometimes derailed what would have been a fine performance! We all loved him and are sorry that he has gone. I'm sending my condolences to all those who know and love him and have added his name to the "In Memoriam" thread. RIP Gerry. |
