Subject: The Old 'Morning Star' From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 22 Nov 00 - 10:15 PM woke up the other morning inspired to write a song in memory of the little sailing ship that took my G.G.Grandfather over to the mission feilds of Bulgaria in 1864 (we have the diary he kept on board during the voyage). for what its worth, here are the lyrics. Still working on the tune.
The Old "Morning Star"
1.
The "Morning Star" sails at the crack of the dawning;
Calling each redeemed Sailor, and born-again Tar;
We'll haul up her anchor while the tide is a-turnin';
Spread her main to the Spirit as we roll o're the bar!
Chorus:
A-weigh-HO!; Set the mains'l; We're outward bound rollin';
Point the "Morning Star's" bowsprit out over the bar;
Her Captain's none other than the "Lion of Judah"
Safe passage to Zion on the Old Morning Star!
2.
When mission fields white to the harvest were calling,
Our faithful forefathers set out o're the bar;
With her sails filled with prayer, and her holds full of promise
plowing over deep oceans 'board the old "Morning Star".
3.
Though the course set before us by Patriarch Prophets
Leads through troubled waters, and tempest, and war;
And the blood of dear martyrs runs mixed with deep currents,
This sea has been sailed by His Pilgrims before.
4.
Through dark night and tempest, her lamps brightly burning;
Her crew up on deck holy vigil to keep;
Strong hands on the wheel hold true course, never turning;
tho' pierced by cruel nails, never slumber nor sleep.
5.
When you find yourself floundering, your keel smashed asunder;
or afflicted with pestilence, tempest or sword;
Won't you call out to Jesus just before you go under?
So we can heave out the life - line and haul you on board!
6.
The Old "Morning Star" sails through mists of the morning;
We can tarry no longer; the call has come clear.
Step up to the altar, and sign the ship's roster;
pick up your old sea-bag, and lay down all fear!
( Chorus)
Dedicated to the memory and ministry of the Christian Mission Barque "Morning Star"

Subject: RE: Lyr Add: The Old 'Morning Star' From: GUEST,Uncle Jaque Date: 23 Nov 00 - 09:14 AM It's coming - I just stick the tinwhistle in my head and listen to what comes out. It's in a minor mode (as many of the sea songs tend to be) and metricly draws heavily from "Streets of Lareado", or may be an arrangement thereof. It's got a pretty constant EM - C - AM - G - AM chord progression and a hefty backbeat. I'll share it on Paltalk some nite. Also working on one called "Innagain Outtagain Finnegan", an Irish pub song, it seems.. Where are these all coming from?? |
