Johnny Cunningham and Susan McKeown with Aidan Brennan in Seattle - Concert

I went to a great concert last night at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle. It was a typical rainy night in Seattle, and Johnny and Susan brought their dark Celtic gloom from Scotland and Ireland - quite appropriate. But it was wonderful. Many of their songs were taken from their recent CD WINTER TALISMAN. Johnny began with his poem about a snowman built to protect a family and farmhouse - a winter talisman. Susan's singing was beautiful and moving as she sang (some in Gaelic, some in English) about wauking the cloth - a Scottish winter occupation, the beautiful "Mal Bhan Ni Chuilleannain", a Wexford Mummer's Song, etc. Johnny played fiddle backed up by the able guitar of Aiden. He recited another poem, "An Urbane Scotsman in Alaska", where a vactioning Scot wandered away from his Alaska cruise tour and came face-to-face with a hairy denizen of the wild, followed by a 4-part jig he wrote after a friend had a "Unfortunate Snow Incident" trying to "write" a yellow snow angel outside a pub after too much holiday cheer ("frostbite can be an ugly thing").

In the second part they sang, and Johnny recited, excerpts of Johnny's musical score to the theater production of PETER AND WENDY based on J. M. Barrie's classic tale of Peter Pan. They closed with a moving rendition of Auld Lang Syne in both the old and newer versions with the audience joining in.

They will be in Port Townsend tomorrow night, then down to Portland on Friday and then to Californian. They will be on their US tour through the middle of Dec (see schedule). Don't miss them if they come your way.

Cheers, S. in Seattle

I'm hoping to catch them here in VT in December. They were through in September and gave an amazing performance.
