from the Levy Sheet Music site:

THE POWDER MONKEY
(Words by Hugh Cummerford. Music by Odoardo Barri.)

You ask me for a sto-ry, boys
I've told ye times be-fore;
_ How in_my pow-der monk-ey days,
We sail'd from shore to shore;
How lit-tle Joe, the small-est lad we had in all the fleet
Was just as full of mis-chief
As_an egg is full of meat
A pro-per mon-key he for tricks as ev-er car-ried can
And many a good rope's-end-ing got,
but spite of it, each man
would laugh and hail him com rade
And_at night both young and old
Would bid him join the chor-us
When_their jolly jolly songs they trolled

Cheer-i-ly boys, the winds blows fairs.
Pipe all hands and a-way we go.
three long cheers for our cap-tains share
and one for the pow-der monk-ey Joe.
Cheer-i-ly boys, the wind blows fair,
Pipe all hands with a Yo heave ho!
three long cheers for our cap-tains share
and one for the pow-der monk-ey Joe.
And one for the pow-der monk-ey Joe.

Our cap-tain was a right good man, as kind as he was brave;
He'd face the hot-test fire in fight
And court a soil-or's grave.
Yet two a-mong our good ship's crew
Con-spir'd his life to take;
To shoot him as he lay asleep, (They dared not when a-wake)
But pw-der mon-keyy Joe o'er-heard the cowards' wick-ed plot
And with some grog con-triv'd to soak
their pow-der and their shot;
He saved our cap-tain's life, he did, and
reap'd his pluck's re-ward
For soon they made him sec-ond_mate and
now he wears a sword
