If you put Louisiana Hayride into Google you get a lot of info. Look for a write-up by Joey Kent who currently owns the name and back catalogue. His late father, David, revived the Hayride in the seventies and early eighties and continued the old tradition with some great country music. We played there in 1979 and 1980 with the Cobbers which shows that in some ways they stretched the boundaries of what they would present. In others, David was very fixed. I remember a conversation that went something like:
Me: We're in the heart of the Red River Valley here. Do you ever have anyone who sings the old "Cowboy" songs.
David: No. They don't really fit our format. We present more modern country. We did have one fellow though, a few months back who did all those old Gene Autrey and Sons of the Pioneers numbers.
Me: How did it go?
David: Very well. The crowd shouted for more.
Me: So, are you going to have him back soon?
David: I don't think so. It doesn't really fit our format.
And I thought it was only the commercial radio stations who worried about that. Mind you, to be fair, when we were on, there were 7.5 million listeners and that increased later when more stations took it up. David had to be very aware of his sponsors and their likes and dislikes.
