Looks like we've got a programmed Mudgather at Upton-upon-Severn this year, many thanks to the Organisers!!   It should be on the Saturday 2nd May at tea-time and hopefully in the Swan Barn, fabulous venue!! Here's the Upton Fest web-site!

Shan't be at Upton this year Hils, so I shall miss it. No Herbaceous Border under the bridge either! Instead I shall be dancing at Rochester Sweeps with Exmoor Border.

We're at Upton this year, but we'll be on the way to Minehead at teatime Saturday, so we'll miss it again!

Hi Hils !!
          I am trying to get Karen interested ! She hasn't been before, but I have --I remember Splotty & The Dame doing a song with the tune "The Ash Grove" (love it !)in it, and a load of drunks started singing the rugby-club version words---shame on them !!
               I don't think it clashes with anything else in May,so there's a good chance---shame about Sue,though ; I would have liked playing for HB under the bridge !!

i think it is mate went there 6 or 7 years ago with the english civel war mob. good beer and Indian restaurant, and always a plus the locals were a good laugh

Hope you'll be able to get along then Andy, it's a great town for a Folk Festival! The website should have campsite info, though I think it'll only be for weekend ticket-holders.

Thanks for that Snuffy, looks like it'd be a bit far to do both!!

Have heard from the organisers that they're starting on the Friday with a 'meet & greet' event in the museum, the following is from Bev's email:

Could you tell everyone about our birthday celebration - we are going to have a gathering from 8pm on Friday night in the museum for all involved in Upton over the years. Gill and I are doing loads of grub and the first drink will be free- then bring your own! We are expecting people to drop in mingle and then go on to what they want to do. We will try to have programmes and lots of information on what's on around and we want people just to chill!

This looks like fun, I'll definitely be popping in to meet & greet and probably throw in a few hugs aswell *grin*

Chunky jumper: You probably won't get a parking space in the town but there's a car park at the Rugby field where the festival campsite is. The Swan pub is down by the River & the barn is the right-hand side of the pub as you enter via the 'garden' gate. Hope you can get along!!

Blast, this is the Exmouth Shantymen schedule. Exactly overlapping the mudgather.


Saturday 2nd Star downstairs, Sea Shanties 14.00 - 15.00 (1hr)
Saturday 2nd Conway Castle (passenger boat moored on waterfront), sea shanties, 15.10hrs (45 mins sailing I think).
Saturday 2nd Star upstairs, 'Meet the Shantymen' 16.45 - 18.00 (1hr 15)

BTW, I think we're actually programmed fringe and I don't think we'll be stewarded, we tend to look after ourselves.....

My heartfelt thanks to all who came to the MudGather, for staying despite the loud music created by the people playing so close to the doorway and for singing so well and so loudly. Thank you for keeping the MudGather spirit alive and for giving me your warm support, it was a difficult situation and it's obviously not a good venue for us. Hopefully we'll have a more comfortable venue next year if we're programmed in. The White Lion was fairly empty at that time apparently and the landlord happily agreed that we could eat chocolate there if we so wished *grin*

Mr Happy & the Gloom Band were otherwise engaged folking about elsewhere when the Mugather was on [that's a prob with fests - too much happening simultaneously!]- but was in the Swan far end with Degsy & Julia of Trim Rig & also Analww.

Most've the other seshes we enjoyed were in the Anchor with John & Pauline,& Mr Red peeping through the winder! the Muggery with Dave4 Guild & Acorn4, & the final best sesh Sunday night in the Anchor.

Fab festival, completely missed it, as usual!!

We spent a couple of worried hours waiting for Rusty the kitten to return to the caravan so we could set off for home. I think she's outgrown the van now *sigh*

Know what ye mean about cats.

We used to take ours camping to fests when she was a kitten & Mrs Happy'd take great delight in taking her in pubs which had notices saying 'No Dogs'!

Was always very popular with both adults & children on the various campsites, being on a long lead to prevent inexperienced wanderings & getting lost.

As a kitten, she'd settle down very well in pub seshes, as we always had her on a harness & lead, but would sometimes walk about the tops've the tables, much to everyone's amusement.

We nearly lost her once at Hardraw, when she managed to slip the secured end've the lead off its fixing & went off roaming the field in the dark.

Luckily, the lead was trailing behind her, so Mrs Happy was much relieved to retrieve it with Sakura on the other end!!

At Upton craft fair, we came across our old chum, Pete Grassby, who over the years at many fests has been renowned for his very well trained cats, who'd walk alongside him wherever he went.

Sadly the old one had passed away, but he'd a new one, being nurtured in the same way & accompanying him around just like a dog!

Yes, I remember your kitten Mr Happy, many thanks for your story! Didn't you have her with you at Bishops Castle, not sure which year? Yes, I know Pete's cat who wanders around, as does Jan the Van's cat, and there's also Colin & Lisbeth's cat, but she stays in the van.

Rusty managed to slip her harness off at Upton. She was outgrowing her kitten harness, so I changed her to a cat one, but obviously I didn't get it on her securely enough *sigh* We've decided that she's outgrown the caravan now, so we're looking at ways to keep her at home while we're off gallavanting!
