Here we are then nearly into August and no complaints yet about WFW and I am not about to change that.

Glaisdale Session 18th August 2019

For the last goodness knows how many years there has been a song session at Glaisdale on the Sunday of Whitby Folk Week with an invitation to travel by train if you fancy a beer or two. This was initially to get away from the Regatta on the weekends they chose to share their dates with Folk Week. No overlap this year but it is an interesting train journey and all are welcome.

I am not sure how but the mantle passed to me last year and so the invite is here.

The Arncliffe does an excellent range of good wholesome food and keeps a good cellar.

We should hope to start the session about 1:30pm and go round the room. There is usually a natural break mid session.

Single Whitby to Glaisdale £4:90

Prices are for one adult
The usual railcard discounts apply so for a crumbly like me with a railcard it is £3:30 return.

Thanks Malcolm, hope to be there. Ticket prices Darlo to Saltburn similar. Often the conductor didn't come looking for fares on the way out but the free ride out was hardly a saving. (Now all the platforms have ticket machines and 'woe betide' notices - at what cost?)

This do works due to the random mix of folks who decide to come.
I could offer a lift from the station for a few less agile though its not far. Let me know.

One more sleep and then off to Whitby.

Two more sleeps and then it's the trip to Glaisdale.

Picked up my train tickets yesterday so now all set.

Hope to see a good crowd for an enjoyable session.

I'm booked in at the pub. Have gone by train from this end ie Dinsdale and Down the Esk valley but twice no train and I've had to drive down anyway. Fingers crossed for walking weather Monday.

Yes, it was a lovely relaxed afternoon seeing the Esk Valley from the train, and enjoying a good session of songs and tunes in the friendly pub. They did nice food as well! Some of us wandered down to the Beggar's Bridge at the end of the session and read the romantic story behind its construction four centuries ago. Thanks to Malcolm for organising the afternoon.

Last year the room was only half full. Fair enough as the session had been in doubt until Malcolm stepped in. This year it was only half full again so I fear folks will vote with their feet and abandon a dwindling event. This would be a pity as the room has hosted some grand sessions in previous years.

As you know John Christine and I organised this event from it's conception. We asked our many friends and acquaintances from years of attending folk week.

Perhaps they came because they felt they ought to because I had asked them, they also told other friends and it sort of snowballed.

It could have been, I like to tell myself, because I could "organise" a good do.

But I suspect Malcolm is streets ahead of me in that department!!

My first time on this trip so cannot compare with previous years, but liked the fact that it wasn't overcrowded. The pub had set aside plenty of seats: will they continue to do so if it is only half full? Perhaps numbers could be boosted in future years by including it in the "Whitby Wailer" and on the Whitby Folk Week Facebook page?

Christine and Nick organised this event for many years to make possible this wonderful trip out. It gave a great many people so much pleasure with the whole experience of songs , tunes, fellowship , a warm atmosphere with superb scenery along the Esk. . Thank you both for your hard work. All credit to Malcolm for continuing to organise such a special trip. It would be a pity to see it's end in the future years and I do hope it can thrive and continue.

I have ideas for perhaps encouraging more people along in future years.
I initially did not want what was obviously an enjoyable event to cease and so, being the person I am, volunteered to do the liaison.
The 2020 event will be on 23rd August 2020 and all are welcome.

As I kind of hinted above, if declining numbers are an issue, you might get more coming if one of your Facebooker gnomes could put it on the Whitby Folk Week Facebook page. However, if you're happy with things as they are, then so be it.
Hope I'll be back next year, but declining hearing and balance may dictate otherwise!

Just read the thread again and realised that Nick & Christine had dropped in during the session - apparently travel lagged. So much so that Raggy left part of a pint before heading off for the sack.

As ever I was drinking the real ale on handpump, several pints (not driving) ar £3-50 but when it went up to £4 that was the last I bought!
