Subject: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 24 Jul 19 - 02:49 PM Here we are then nearly into August and no complaints yet about WFW and I am not about to change that. Glaisdale Session 18th August 2019 For the last goodness knows how many years there has been a song session at Glaisdale on the Sunday of Whitby Folk Week with an invitation to travel by train if you fancy a beer or two. This was initially to get away from the Regatta on the weekends they chose to share their dates with Folk Week. No overlap this year but it is an interesting train journey and all are welcome. I am not sure how but the mantle passed to me last year and so the invite is here. The Arncliffe Arms No 1 Arncliffe Terrace Glaisdale, Whitby, NorthYorkshire, YO212QL Telephone Number 01947 897555 Email – contact@arncliffearms.com Nearest Train Station – Glaisdale The Arncliffe does an excellent range of good wholesome food and keeps a good cellar. We should hope to start the session about 1:30pm and go round the room. There is usually a natural break mid session. Suggested Journeys (Whitby-Glaisdale Sun 18th Aug) Depart Arrive Time 12:46 13:11 0:25 15:48 16:13 0:25 Returns from Glaisdale Depart Arrive Time 14:52 15:20 0:28 17:54 18:21 0:27 17-54 LAST TRAIN BACK Just to show how silly ticket pricing is on the railways these days Single Whitby to Glaisdale £4:90 Single Glaisdale to Whitby £4:90 Return Whitby to Glaisdale or vice versa £5:00 Prices are for one adult The usual railcard discounts apply so for a crumbly like me with a railcard it is £3:30 return. Hope to see as many as will cheers in advance Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: JHW Date: 25 Jul 19 - 03:35 AM Thanks Malcolm, hope to be there. Ticket prices Darlo to Saltburn similar. Often the conductor didn't come looking for fares on the way out but the free ride out was hardly a saving. (Now all the platforms have ticket machines and 'woe betide' notices - at what cost?) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: John MacKenzie Date: 25 Jul 19 - 03:57 AM I haven't been to this session before, mainly because I have been stewarding for the last 10 years, but now I'm free, I will try to join in this jaunt. Cheers Malcolm. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Raggytash Date: 25 Jul 19 - 10:31 AM You got it because you volunteered Malcolm, good on you for doing so. I will miss it again as I will be in Ireland but hopefully will to Whitby on the Monday or Tuesday. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Liberty Boy Date: 25 Jul 19 - 04:58 PM Well done that man. (Somebody has to do it Malcolm!) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Tattie Bogle Date: 25 Jul 19 - 06:25 PM Sounds good: got all the details last year, then didn't do it. This year maybe! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: JHW Date: 27 Jul 19 - 06:08 AM This do works due to the random mix of folks who decide to come. I could offer a lift from the station for a few less agile though its not far. Let me know. Not back though as I'll have had a few jars. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 01 Aug 19 - 08:47 PM Hey up Raggy - I suppose I did (volunteer). Good on you JHW - you are offering the hard (uphill) bit as a lift. Back to the train is downhill folks. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: SussexCarole Date: 04 Aug 19 - 11:23 AM Sounds like a great afternoon. See you there. Carole & Andrew(Crane Driver) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: sapper82 Date: 13 Aug 19 - 10:50 AM Hopefully the Dearly Tolerant & myself will be there. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 16 Aug 19 - 07:12 PM Nearly there! One more sleep and then off to Whitby. Two more sleeps and then it's the trip to Glaisdale. Picked up my train tickets yesterday so now all set. Hope to see a good crowd for an enjoyable session. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: JHW Date: 17 Aug 19 - 05:15 AM I'm booked in at the pub. Have gone by train from this end ie Dinsdale and Down the Esk valley but twice no train and I've had to drive down anyway. Fingers crossed for walking weather Monday. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Tattie Bogle Date: 19 Aug 19 - 12:53 PM Really nice afternoon, good session, and enjoyed the train ride through lovely countryside. Thanks to Malcolm for organising it all. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Matthew Edwards Date: 20 Aug 19 - 04:06 AM Yes, it was a lovely relaxed afternoon seeing the Esk Valley from the train, and enjoying a good session of songs and tunes in the friendly pub. They did nice food as well! Some of us wandered down to the Beggar's Bridge at the end of the session and read the romantic story behind its construction four centuries ago. Thanks to Malcolm for organising the afternoon. Matthew |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: JHW Date: 20 Aug 19 - 04:54 AM Last year the room was only half full. Fair enough as the session had been in doubt until Malcolm stepped in. This year it was only half full again so I fear folks will vote with their feet and abandon a dwindling event. This would be a pity as the room has hosted some grand sessions in previous years. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Raggytash Date: 20 Aug 19 - 06:20 AM As you know John Christine and I organised this event from it's conception. We asked our many friends and acquaintances from years of attending folk week. Perhaps they came because they felt they ought to because I had asked them, they also told other friends and it sort of snowballed. It could have been, I like to tell myself, because I could "organise" a good do. But I suspect Malcolm is streets ahead of me in that department!! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Tattie Bogle Date: 23 Aug 19 - 03:15 AM My first time on this trip so cannot compare with previous years, but liked the fact that it wasn't overcrowded. The pub had set aside plenty of seats: will they continue to do so if it is only half full? Perhaps numbers could be boosted in future years by including it in the "Whitby Wailer" and on the Whitby Folk Week Facebook page? |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,David Nuttall Date: 24 Aug 19 - 06:37 AM Christine and Nick organised this event for many years to make possible this wonderful trip out. It gave a great many people so much pleasure with the whole experience of songs , tunes, fellowship , a warm atmosphere with superb scenery along the Esk. . Thank you both for your hard work. All credit to Malcolm for continuing to organise such a special trip. It would be a pity to see it's end in the future years and I do hope it can thrive and continue. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: John MacKenzie Date: 24 Aug 19 - 10:36 AM Yes, a good time was had by one and all, thanks again Malcolm. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: SussexCarole Date: 24 Aug 19 - 01:57 PM We both really enjoyed the session at Glaisdale. A relaxed and friendly afternoon of song and music. Thanks everyone |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 26 Aug 19 - 08:40 PM Thank you all for your thanks. I have ideas for perhaps encouraging more people along in future years. I initially did not want what was obviously an enjoyable event to cease and so, being the person I am, volunteered to do the liaison. The 2020 event will be on 23rd August 2020 and all are welcome. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: John MacKenzie Date: 27 Aug 19 - 11:02 AM I'll be there if the lord spares me Malcolm |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 27 Aug 19 - 07:27 PM Thanks John And so he/she should (got to be careful!) |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Tattie Bogle Date: 28 Aug 19 - 04:30 PM Thanks Malcolm. Grand job! As I kind of hinted above, if declining numbers are an issue, you might get more coming if one of your Facebooker gnomes could put it on the Whitby Folk Week Facebook page. However, if you're happy with things as they are, then so be it. Hope I'll be back next year, but declining hearing and balance may dictate otherwise! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 28 Aug 19 - 07:07 PM Thanks Tattie Judy is on Facebook so I will ask her. I also have some other plans. I ought to retire really. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: JHW Date: 29 Aug 19 - 05:34 AM Most of us have retired Malcolm. Thats why we've nothing better to do than go to folk clubs etc. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Tattie Bogle Date: 29 Aug 19 - 11:53 AM Ha-ha! Ah well, there's retirement and second careers and re-retirement! I know Malcolm has done a huge share over the years! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 30 Aug 19 - 08:41 PM Just read the thread again and realised that Nick & Christine had dropped in during the session - apparently travel lagged. So much so that Raggy left part of a pint before heading off for the sack. Good to see you - sorry we did not get time for a chat. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Raggytash Date: 01 Sep 19 - 02:16 PM Travel lagged true, very travel lagged!! But the true reason was that it was served by a VERY rude lass behind the bar AND the Guinness was shi*e! |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: Raggytash Date: 03 Sep 19 - 04:55 AM Thank you for your kind words David, very much appreciated. |
Subject: RE: Whitby Folk Week & Glaisdale Session From: JHW Date: 03 Sep 19 - 05:09 AM As ever I was drinking the real ale on handpump, several pints (not driving) ar £3-50 but when it went up to £4 that was the last I bought! |
