Well, seeing as I stepped in it HERE I'll try and make good.

The intent is a website/database with information about local festivals. We've had a lot of questions brought up, and a lot of great festivals touted, let's get them into one place!

The basics:
1. Where and when?
2. Is there a link/phone#/addy where I can get more information?
3. Types of music, general fare?
4. All the extras about camping, facilities, workshops, children, pets, alcohol...etc.

I have the events that are in current thread, anything else can be PM'd at the 'Cat, left to this thread, or e-mailed to [e-mail]

I'm thinking of calling it "Yeah, I can tell you where to go..." :)

The Goderich Celtic Festival is found at www.celticfestival.on.ca ... e-mail at [e-mail] ... If you send me a mailing address, I'll be happy to send you the brochure, but I think everything's on-line now. The Ontario Council of Folk Festivals might have a website and if I find it I'll send it along.

JenEllen- I second the nomination! It could be a lot of work for you but it will also be a really good resource for us all.

I wrote in the other thread about the Alaska Folk Festival in Juneau: its e-ddress is http://www.juneau.com/aff/. What a blast if Mudcatters came here one fine day!

It occurs to me that it might be helpful if we ourselves did the 'legwork'- in other words, if we give you the phone numbers and the other details upfront rather than making you get the info from the website. Let me know.

Thanks thosp! I wasn't looking so much for the day-to-day events, folks seem pretty good about posting when they are going to be somewhere 'what's going on then?', and local media covers things faster than ever I could.

I was thinking more along the lines of a state by state (and country too) resource for links and information on annual events. Some very interesting questions about amenities were brought up, and I'm willing to do the footwork, talk to folks, and gather the links. The individual festivals would be responsible for schedule information, etc.

I spoke with the guy that runs our festival, he's also given a lot of tips and folks to talk to. It should be quite the endeavor...Mooh, my application is probably under the pile of stuff that's collected already..:)

Old Songs: My favorite festival. Perfect except for the lack of shade in the camping area when it's sunny, and the hardness of the soil (bring steel tent stakes) lack of drainage when it rains.

Champlain Valley: My second favorite. Only major flaws are lack of any camping and limited space for jamming.

Basin Bluegrass Festival, Brandon, VT: My local favorite. Mostly regional, not national, bands, but much calmer and more friendly than the average BG fester.

My favorite festivals are:
Thomas Point Bluegrass on labor day weekend, Brunswick, ME
Grey Fox Bluegrass in July (formerly Winterhawk), Ancramdale, NY
Strawberry Park Bluegrass in June (next weekend), Preston, CT

well I'm not very computer literate yet so I don't have any idea how to do that stuff in blue.. But My favorite festival is of course the Rollo Bay Fiddle Festival in Prince Edward Island Canada.. Its always the 3rd weekend in July.. There is camping on site.. there are bathrooms and showers and it is VERY clean...For more information you could go to the site for Prince Edward Island, Canada.. The visitors guide gives a list of festivals and camp sites... Its really just the best.. Great musicians from Canada, the US and elsewhere.. Great dancers... great time for all ages.. Open air dance under the stars on Saturday night....This year it will be the 14,15 and 16 of July....call Peter Chaisson at 1-902-687-2584 for more info tell him Meg sent you....KGH

One of my favorite festiavls (I will have performed there four out of the last five years), has been the Redditch Folk Festival, now the Redditch-Arden Folk Festival, just a short bit out of Birmingham, UK. It's a real singers festival with some occasional legends such as Martin Carthy and Bill Caddock, both who performed there last year as well as a great many others with fabulous voices. Since they changed locations I believe they have also changed their web site address but you might be able to find it on a search (Redditch Folk Festival). Lost of fun and singing and "real ale" too.

For me there is only Whitby Folk Week. A chance to see freinds we have not seen for a year even though we all attend other festivals.Good concerts and dancing of all sorts the sessions in the pubs around the town. Plus whitby cod and chips, Now I can't wait for August. Keith

Whitby Folk Week this year runs from 19-25 August there is a PO box no for mail but I can't remember it but I am sure if you mail Whitby Folk Week PO Box? Selby N Yorks it will find the organiser. IT IS NOT ME. I will if possible supply any information that I can for intrested parties.I understand there is going to be a mudcat gathering at the festival. Keith

My favorite festival is not really a festival, it's the summer picking camp of FOAOTMAD (Friends of American Old Time Music and Dance) at Sacrewell Farm, Peterborough. This year it's from 11th August 'till the 20th. It only costs £2-00 per day camping in a superb field with good facilities + restaurant + excellent farm and watermill museum (great for kids), with peacocks wandering around. We get around 40 or so assorted pickers (banjo, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, stand-up bass, and the occasional dulcimer and autoharp. We play when we feel like it, which is often, in small or large sessions, and relax the rest of the time. If it rains, we have the Hen House - a large hall with chairs & tables and a stage.
The musical standard is excellent. Come to pick or just listen and watch for a day or a week - you're very welcome. Its so good, I'm coming back from Galax a day early!

To Timbrel: unfortunately, the Connecticut River Valley Bluegrass Festival at Sunrise Resort in Moodus, CT is now defunct. The CRVBGA still runs the occasionally concert, but can no longer lose piles of money attempting to run that festival without enough public support. Folks like us at mudcat support music every way we can. Sometimes that's just not enough. It was fun though, while it lasted and may revive somewhere else someday . . .

Marymac here... I enthusiastically agree with those who praise Old Songs and Champlain Valley, and I believe Mystic Seaport is good too, though I've never made it there. I also like Clearwater, Falcon Ridge, and Turtle Hill. I will be attending Appel Farm this Saturday. I usually go to Philadelphia Folk Festival, cause I LIVE here, but I don't camp there. Does anybody know about a festival in Canada, maybe Nova Scotia, that is held in honor of Stan Rogers, maybe around 4th of July weekend? Message me at Marymac90.
