I just found out I'll be playing at the Tucson Folk Festival on May 4 & 5 this year. Are there any Mudcatters out that way??

Fiddler's Dream is only a two hour drive north, Jed! Don't forget us Phoenix folks while you are in Arizona!

I'll be there some of the time with leading a contra dance demo/workshop with Tucson Friends of Traditional Music. Not enough trad at that festival for my tastes, though. Where are you coming from?

Becky in Tucson - I'm coing from Dallas. Actually, late as it is, I'd like to try to get a pub gig or house concert along the way - help defray costs, ya know. Any ideas? Do you know anything about these pubs?

Boondocks Lounge
Cushing Street Bar
Montgomery's Irish Pub
O'Malley's on Fourth
Stein & Dine

Doug - I suspect I can manage a trip through Phoenix on the way up or back. Maybe we can get a night out or visit the Fiddler's Dream open stage on Thursday - or something.

The Boondocks regularly books bands, mostly of the louder sort. Cushing St., having recently re-opened, I don't know their full plan, but they've welcomed the twice-monthly Irish session, and another time I was in there they had a jazz (or something??) band. Montgomery's also books a variety of performers (or at least there are two groups I know of -- one Irish trad, the other the Mollys). O'Malley's I think mostly has rock and loud stuff (I'm speaking from my biases, though, and assuming you're a solo singer type). Stein and Dine has new management -- that's where the Irish session moved from -- so I don't know what they're up to lately. Other possibilities I can think of are Plush (have a variety of music), Hazy Dayz (have a regular songwriters' series), Epic Cafe, and the Bookman's bookstores (an AZ used books chain).

(I frequently find myself trying to answer this question and I'm really the wrong person to do it, being a hard-core traddie who doesn't get out much. However, since my name's out in the world in assocation with TFTM, I'm often contacted, and try to be helpful... You could PM me a mailing address, and I could send you the "Night Life" page from the Friday paper!)

I imagine there's a lot of competition for gigs around the Folk Festival. Good luck in your search!

~ Becky

I've got a spare bedroom, Jed, and we might even be able to scrape up some Gunnness Stew or something.

You're on Doug! I'll manage a trip up to Phoenix before or after the festival. I'll be in Tucson for Fri, Sat and Sun nights - so maybe Thu or Mon I can swing through Phx. I'm going to get on the phone Mon and see if I can pick up another gig enroute.

OK - I've got a bit more detail, so I've pasted in below the text I sent to the Arizona Irish Music folks:

"I am going to be performing Irish and American folk music at the Tucson Folk Festival at El Presidia Park on May 4 & 5. I am scheduled to play on Sunday, May 5th at the Courtyard Stage at 5:45 PM. I have also been asked to lead a workshop on the Irish Immigrant Experience in Song (working title) which I expect to be scheduled for a slot on Saturday. You'll have to check the Festival Schedule for those details. For Tucson Folk Festival information please call 520 319-8599. Please come out to the show or the workshop, and please stop to say hello! All the best - Jed Marum"

Desert Dancer - thanks kindly for the newspaper info. I have decided to stick to the festival only, for this trip (they will be keeping me pretty busy over the weekend) ... but I definately use your info for future reference. I hope to eventually include AZ in my regular rotation, one day soon.

Please do come out to asy hello, if you can. I'd love to meet you and any other AZ region Mudcatters!

Doug - I'm not going to include Phoenix on this trip. I'll be in Tucson from Fri to Mon - and have dates in Dallas just before and just after - so my time is short, this trip.

I guess that just means you'll have to come to Tucson, to meet Desert Dancer, me, and any other Mudcatters we can round up from the wilderness!

Let me know if you can make it. I'll have info on my accommodations before too long, and we can figure out how to connect.

I'm looking forward to the festival. Sounds like they've got a great thing going - and I've managed to get a pretty prime performance slot (beginner's luck). Hope to see ya there.

Last Refresh of this thread.

The festival is coming up next weekend - I hope all the Mudcatters in driving distance will make it out to the festival, and will say hello.

I'll also be doing two workshops - both on Saturday. One on Civil War Era songs ... and I'll be sharing a workshop with another performer on Finger Pickin'

Doug, are you going to drive down to see us?

I might be able to make it down Saturday, Jed. I'm going to PM Desert Dancer for more details. Sorry to be so late in replying to your post on the 18th. I just saw it today. I've been busy sparring with Carol C. on a couple of other threads. Tryin' to set her straight. :>)

See you guys there! I'll probably be around mostly on Saturday. Tucson Friends of Traditional Music will have a booth.

Jed, unfortunately your workshop will make you miss my friends' band that does Irish stuff: Round the House. The other Irish stuff (that I know of!) is from Trim the Velvet on Sunday at 1:15, and the Bringers, from Phoenix do some too, I believe (4 pm on Saturday).

No, no, no, Jed! I did't make myself clear. I meant to say I was TRYING to set Carol C straight. I gave it up as a lost cause finally.

Sorry I won't be able to see you this trip after all, Jed. I checked my calendar and realized I had committed to play in a golf tournament Saturday, and have family plans Sunday.

I'm going to be in Dallas sometime during the week of May 13. Maybe I can catch you and Emmon's Kitchen playing a gig while I'm there.

see you Sat - if not sooner. Apparently there is some sort of event happening on Friday night at the Old Time Artisan's (does that sound right)? I believe it begins about 4PM - sounds like Happy Hour blends into dinner blends into all night drink 'til they kick you out sorta thing. I donlt drink, but I'll enjoy the music which apparently happens all the way through!

I MISS Tucson! I played at the Festival with the Titan Valley Warheads, Bluegrass band from Tucson. Are they still picking?
I played at downtown saturdaynight a lot too, great fun.
Any out of towners try to visit "The Folk Shop", a neat all-folk related music store. I assume they are still there. I left AZ 5 years ago for Boston. Tucson is a big city but it dosen't feel like one.

'mon back to Tucson, Lonesome Gillette, all is forgiven!! 'sides it ain't so lonesome out there as Boston (my old home town)!

;-)

I'll try to find the Folk Shop, and check up on the Titan Valley Warheads.

you know Jed, that's true about Boston being lonesome v.s. Tucson.
Seems like my wife and I had lots of friends out there and were more social, it wasn't as hard to be, here we know a few people, mostly band members and stuff but everyone seems so isolated.
I guess this is no big news to anyone.
I remember going to many outdoor music parties in tucson with lots of people, drums, electric guitars, banjos, whatever, that would NEVER hapen here.

Weather wouldn't co-operate for one thing...

But part of the problem is BOSTON - I mean - just get out of the city - got to Cape Ann, or Cape Cod, or NH or even Worchester! Salam, Quincy,Plymouth, anyplace but BOSTON!

*shudder* I don't like to even think about that place!

Hi Jed and all

My band, Round the House, will be playing (nearly) traditional Irish music on Saturday at 3:30 on the Plaza Stage. I'll be co-leading an Irish fiddle workshop with Clare Aylward on Sunday at 2 pm, I think at area B.

Round the House will also be playing for the contra dance in the evening.

Looking forward to meeting you Sharon G.

Alright Sharon G! Thanks for the message. I have been told I am to be pretty busy - I haven't seen the schedule but I have a two workshops on Sat (Civil War era songs session and a Finger Picking workshop). Then I have a show on Sun and some sound stage duties in between. I will do my best to find you and say hello. Please do the same! I would love to meet as many Mudcatters as possible!

The Folk Shop is at 2525 N. Campbell Blvd., a block north of Grant Rd. Definitely not to be missed. Across the street is Hear's Music, a nice independent CD retailer (listen before you buy), and next door to them is a nice used book store, The Book Mark.

The Titan Valley Warheads are still going strong! They split a show with Ralph Stanley back in January. They'll be at the Festival.

Jed, I'll PM you with the whole schedule. Roung the House is during the second half of your fingerpicking workshop, unfortunately, but see if you can connect up with some of them. They'll likely be hanging about the TFTM booth some of the time... Also, Claire, the Round the House singer & drummer, is also doing a clogging workshop, Dave the mando and banjo (4-string tuned as an octave mando) player will be doing a mando workshop.

TFTM newsletter with Festival schedule appeared in mailbox yesterday. Thanks to whoever worked that out in time to tempt folks to mosey on down there..

Besides, bound to be some AZ-Sonoran style food booths tucked away in the corners.

Well then, thanks Becky! Looks like a fun line up with plenty of ancilliary activities, workshops (Craig's clawhammer) and such. Noticed the city crews setting up the ubiquitous green bleachers this week.

Oh, got my TFTM card around here somewheres... You helped us with tickets and directions when Ken Perlman performed at house concert awhile back. Everything worthwhile always seems to depend on a certain few dedicated souls who make it all happen.
