I used to write a column for the local newspaper here (in Orillia, Ontario), where I ruffled some feathers, but generally got a lot of enthusiastic reactions from supporters. I wrote a couple of vicious attacks on casinos (we recently acquired one) that one casino employee was offended by, but that was about it for negative responses. Sure, go ahead. If they're in a published work, there are formats to citing everything, including email and discussion lists. Someone sent me an essay to read recently, with several citations pointing to emails she had exchanged with the subject of her essay. I've modified them, and below you'll see a couple of forms you could follow. This first one looks like it's Modern Language Association (MLA) style.
Chicago Manual of style might do it like this (they want the author and date first, the order of the rest is a guess on my part):

However, I'm embarrassed to say my wife of many years not only knows all about WS but seems not at all averse to his techniques. Au contraire... I will try to Get a Life as soon as possible. BTW, my sister's son manages a theatre in Canada called the Centre on the Square or something like that. Maybe you could send him some bad actors. For example, I want to send someone a story Don Firth extracted from a memoir I hope he'll publish one of these days. On the top address line in Internet Explorer you'll see the usual: http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=54575 and when you mouse over his name in the top index of posts, you'll see (in the bottom address line in Internet Explorer) that IN ADDITION you'll find the location in the thread, or #846879. Considering the small population in this country, it's a downright amazing place for creativity at times. There was a point when the majority of the finest professional folksingers in the more modern folk genre were from Canada...such as Gordon Lightfoot (from my own town of Orillia), Joni Mitchell, Ian & Sylvia, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Gordon Lightfoot, Stan Rogers, Neil Young, Leonard Cohen, and Bruce Cockburn. The one we just missed getting by a stone's throw was Dylan...he grew up not too far south of the Canadian border in Minnesota. If he'd been Canadian, I predict it would have taken him 3 to 4 more weeks to make it big. :-) We have also made a notable contribution to the ranks of top comedians which far outweighs our meager population base, as compared to the USA. You gotta do something to relieve the long winters, you see, so people dream up all kinds of neat stuff. They inevitably go south and make it big in the USA at some point. |
