Subject: What UK events are there over Easter ?
From: Dave Bryant
Date: 10 Mar 04 - 05:26 AM

I've already checked on the FolkRoots Festival Site so I know about Gasport & Fareham, Burnley, Lancaster, Poynton, Stroud, & Wigan events.

Is there anything else on over Easter, reasonably near the SE, that would attract a couple of trad-ish singers who enjoy pub singarounds/sessions etc rather than more concert style events ?

Dave,

If you find anything can you please crosspost to the BBC? I've found nothing to suggest to those looking for stuff around London other than to help me move house which will certainly be musical but perhaps not quite what they had in mind...

Look at Mr Red's Festivals
Oxford FF is not that far from London but is 16th -18th and big on names.
Priest Weston (Shrops) is always Easter, and Miskin (nr Cardiff) is usually Easter, try the links/phone num on my site for better info. More of your session/singist events.

We have a modest Ceilidh at Randwick VH on the Easter Monday in Stroud. See dance dates.

Yes we have been thinking about Miskin, it's just that as Linda has a 15 year old son (who would not be seen dead at a FF these days), we would prefer not to travel too far from SE London. We have a small caravan and would need a site somewhere near.

Yes Padgett I know Malcolm, a fine singer indeed and a regular at Llantrisant Folk Club (which you should all be voting for on the Mudcat Alternative Folk Awards).

Back to the original request. Not a festival as such, but Tanners Hatch youth Hostel near Dorking has a folk event on, particularly the Saturday. Go to links from its own website.

Mock auctions!- Quizzes wth prizez!

Multiple mystery gusts- don't ask who they're going to be- it's a mystery!

I'm on the bill at Lancaster Maritime this Easter but if I was not I'd aim for either Miskin(near home), or Barnsley, which sounds very tempting. Another good reason for being there is the presence of Benny Graham from Co. Durham. I've been saying for years that Benny is one of the best singers in the whole of Britain and after hearing him just a few weeks ago I think he's never sounded better. He is not fashionable, does not get hyped, is consistently underrated, but there are few as good, let alone better. Well done Barnsley for having him on your do. Have a great time. Burl

Dave - You've chosen well as 'Cloudstreet' are there. Be prepared to be blown away - they are just superb. Give John & Nic my love, they are wonderful people, if a tad Antipodean!!

Me - I'm just not prepared to miss out on Fareham at Easter - fabulous and plain value for money - but sad to say no 'Cloudstreet'

I agree Dave - Miskin is great value for money, and I know that John & Nicole are looking forward to it.
One of these days I might forsake Fareham, but not yet.
