THis song was recorded by Maria Mulduar several years ago. My wife says she wrote it. I say she got it from Clara or Mamie Smith or Sippy Wallace or someone from that era. Anyway, we sure would like to get the lyrics. Thanks Seth from China

Well, my goodness. I don't know how I missed this one... I don't know the song, but I appreciate the sentiment. I'll stay tuned ...

There is a short bit of Real Audio of it HERE. From the 'Meet me where they play the blues'.

Can't find a writing credit or the words yet though.

Southside Johnny and The Ashbury Jukes recorded it in 1976 on 'I don't want to go home'. Still can't find the words but the writing credit is to L. Mann and H Grover?

The song is also on her second album, "Waitress In A Donut Shop" which is a great album. I have a copy in vinyl and made a cassette of it coupled with a David Bromberg album. It's one of my favorite cassettes.

Maria will be at the Chocolate Church sometime in 2001. I ought to get the dates for the upcoming season into What's On!

Didn't Robby Burns have a counter-arguement with "Nine inch will please a lady" ??

Actually, we're counter-posting here. that reply was in answer to Shambles' question...

I like that CD -- "We Can Let it Happen Tonight" also sounds good. Damn! I swore off ordering any more CDs for myself until after Christmas ...

Damn...

From the album notes on the old 1974 l.p. record, Waitress in a Donut Shop, "It Ain't the Meat It's The Motion" is by Henry Glover and Lois Mann.

Well as you know butchers traditionaly deliver whole sides of meat hanging from rails in their trucks. There was one such truck that was having trouble driving up this hill. It would get a little bit up the hill, then would not be able to continue and would jerk back to the bottom again.

A passer-bye suggested to the driver that his truck was overloaded. The driver responded replied that it was well under its wieght limit. Saying it's not the meat it's the motion.

That passer-bye was Henry Grover who later mentioned the incident to Lois Mann and the song was born...........

Honest.

Shambles -- that story may be the writer's "official" explanation, but I've read (tho I can't find the source now) that the song was written as a bold sexually explicit commercial attempt--following the success of "Sixty Minute Man" by the Dominoes, released in 1951.

Or maybe you were just joking about this explanation!

I watched a documentary last night about John Barry and he explained how he and 'oops I've forgot his name' came up with the lyrics to 'diamonds are forever' so I guess anythings possible, but I'll never be able to buy a diamond again.

I suppose it's really what sort of meat it is we are talking about. Myself I've never liked tongue !

I think "Sixty Minute Man" was a tribute to Mike Wallace. In the meantime, not to disrupt this discourse, does anyone have the lyrics to this song?

Well...sorry about the missing lines... (Chorus) "It ain't the meat, it's the motion, Makes your mama want to rock; It ain't the meat, it's the motion; It's the movement that gives it the sock."

Well, I knew a fella who was short and fat; Most girls don't want to see 'em like that; * * * * * * The bigger they come, the harder they fall.

(CHO) Well,I knew a fella who was tall and thin, Not much on him but bones and skin, * * * * * * He wraps himself around me like a rubber band. (Cho.)

Lyrics copied from http://www.bonjovirocks.com/ja2/ssj/ssj_records_02.htm

IT AIN'T THE MEAT (IT'S THE MOTION)
(Henry Glover & Lois Mann, Jay + Cee Music Corp. BMI)

It ain't the meat. It's the motion
That makes your daddy wanna rock.
It ain't the meat. It's the motion.
It's the movement. It isn't the stock.

Well, I got a girl that's so darn thin,
There ain't much of her but bones and skin.
One thing about her I can understand:
She wraps all around me like a rubber band, baby.

It ain't the meat. It's the motion
That makes your daddy wanna rock.
It ain't the meat. It's the motion
It's the movement. It isn't the stock.

Well, I want a girl who's built real fat.
Kenny don't like to see 'em like that,
But I like to see 'em big and tall.
The bigger the come the harder they fall.

It ain't the meat. It's the motion
That makes your daddy wanna rock.
It ain't the meat. It's the motion.
It's the movement. It isn't the stock.

Well, I want someone who feels like they got to have love,
Love to look at the stars above.
My little baby, I want you to know,
She'll bring me home all of her dough.

It ain't the meat. It's the motion
It ain't the meat, uhm uhm uhm.
It ain't the meat, I say, the action
That makes your daddy wanna rock.

Bring it down one time.
It ain't the meat. It's the motion.
It ain't the meat, I say, the movement, girl.
It ain't the meat. It's the action
That makes your daddy wanna rock.

[As recorded by Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes on "Live at the Bottom Line." Originally recorded by The Swallows. (Their version is often anthologized.) Also recorded by Maria Muldaur.]

Shambles, it's not 'want to rock'- it's wanna rock. That explains it. Remember the pet rock craze? This must have been written then, see?

It's sort of like those ben-waaaaaa rocks, don't ya know??

Just "hits the spot" (as they say) and then ya just rock on it "'til the bow breaks and baby will fall"---and off will go baby--cradle and all.
