Yes, people! Bill Shatner has taken the bull by the horns and spoken out. It's all on his official website. He poses the question: What would Captain Kirk do in the present international crisis? And answers it as follows:

Since world peace seems to be hanging by a thread these days, I got to thinking what Captain Kirk would do in such a precarious situation. As ToolPackinMama points out on the board ( See the thread "KIRK WOULD GIVE PEACE A CHANCE"), Kirk would emphasize peace, love, and unity above all else. Given these qualities, it seems as though he would emphasize peaceful negotiations as long as possible. Captain Kirk would turn to force only if he had no other option but to defend himself, his beloved friends, or helpless victims from a vengeful enemy. Even then, Kirk's ultimate goal is to preserve friendship and emphasize forgiveness and compassion for his enemies.

As far as fictional characters go, I think Kirk is an exemplary figure, complex and interesting, holding the best humanistic qualities close to his heart at all times. Are there any other fictional heroes you can think of that do the same thing? Some other interesting fictional heroes I can think of are also trying to preserve the peace. For example, Frodo from "Lord of the Rings" tries to get rid of the Ring of Power to preserve Middle Earth from the Enemy's evil control. My favorite female character, Ripley, from "Aliens" is clear that she is "not a soldier" when the story begins, yet is driven to fight the alien at the end in order to save herself and her "daughter" from certain death.

All these characters seem to share a common thread – violence as a last option. Of course, life as a fictional hero is a lot less complicated than life as a real human on planet Earth. I guess there is no answer that we can look to as a definite example of the way we should act. Our fictional heroes give us clues, though. After all, they have come from our writers' imaginations and we as readers and viewers have elevated them to public status. Maybe we're trying to tell ourselves something.

Go ahead. Whine, complain, and revile me, but I think Bill's making good sense here. Better sense than Bush and Cheney, for instance.

Well, he is getting pretty old, Clinton, so you may get your wish fairly soon. I don't look forward to the day when Bill passes on, no more than I do to the day when Dylan does, cos I will be sort of obliged to write their obituaries if I am still here.

This is one good reason to seek an honorable death (like the samurai did) while one is still young and limber, and before all one's heros and old friends have departed.

Are you stalking me, Clinton? If so, I'm just letting you know that I am planning to go out to Tim Hortons shortly for a tea and a donut, even though the weather here is vicious today.

No, no, no. Captain Kirk would go to the place where war is about to break out, and find the Queen, and, in the course of talking about peace, and friendship, and all that dope, would seduce her, and thus exchange piece for peace. She would be so conflicted that the whole war making machine would collapse ignominiously. In this case, his warmongering enemy is either George W. Bush or Saddam Hussein, and would Captain Kirk be prepared to go the whole 9 yards to preserve galactic peace with either of these two cuties -- and what would Mr. Spock, his secret beloved, say? To boldly go.....

yours, Peter T.

Ha! You're a very sick man, Peter. Actually, that's what Kirk would be forced to do by the scriptwriters, specially in the last year of the original show.

Is that Windsor, UK, Clinton?

Kirk would go up to both world leaders and ask.

If you love your country, how can you scrifice young lives fo oil profits.

Both Bush and Hussein would be thrown into "logic loops" and would immediately shut down.

Kirk would then recite the Declaration of Independance from memory, Put concrete on the horta's wounds and beam all of the tribbles into Disneyland.

I thought Kirk solved all his problems with fisty-cuffs and long wet kisses (depending on the sex of the 'problem'!). Sheesh, now if we could only get Bush and Saddam into one of those long wet kisses instead ....

Years ago I stayed in this hostel in Skye and my dorm was called "Star Trek", every bed named after a character of the series. I took "Captain Kirk's" bed and felt unusually sexy that night. I even seduced the aussie lass assigned to Spok's.

My God, you're a Canadian??? This really worries me. I'm not sure if I can tolerate being in the same province as you, Clinton. :-) I wonder if we've ever seen the other one play music somewhere?

I can tell you frankly, this forum is messing up my state of mind...while also entertaining me...and I can't wait to get back to Trinidad, for a great variety of reasons which I am not going to explain here at this moment.

daylia - Nobody can kiss better than Kirk! Well, nobody male, anyway... Be warned that to post anything you really care about on a public forum is as dangerous as talking about it on the microphone in a hockey arena full of the local hosers, unless you've got a skin like a rhinoceros, and a sense of humor to match it. You never know who's listening.

This is why I often post about William Shatner. I like him, but I don't care if other people make fun of him, cos I do too.

One interesting technique for finding out who the least likeable people are on a given forum (from your point of view, I mean) is to talk about things you care deeply about and see who dumps on you for it and calls you an idiot (or some other derogatory term). Another way is to say things that are the dead opposite of what you believe, and see who agrees enthusiastically, but that gets confusing, unless you do it under a GUEST psuedonym, such as .Gargoyle or something else cute like that. You can even post as a GUEST and have fights with yourself about cogent issues. I would not doubt that some people have done this.

I definitely need to shoot this computer while there is still time...

Thanks for the advice about what to post about and what not, Little Hawk. I've got a flu today, so no students and time on my hands. And I have had my little heart trod upon a few times already here on Mudcat. That'll learn me!

Your right about that 'Kirk kiss'. When we were little kids, playing Spin the Bottle, we used to call it a 'Kirk-kiss' if someone could move their head around real convincingly while pressing the other one's teeth in for more than 10 seconds. We'd practice it all the time! Kirk was my first "love" - at the age of 8! Followed quickly by a long affair with Mr Pointy-Ears - who I found much more attractive because he was SO unromantic and therefore SUCH a challenge. You know, the grass is always greener kind of thing.

Hmmmm - have I said too much? Is someone going to jump down my throat now? Oh noooooooo

Yeah, Spock fascinated women because they were all wondering if they could break down his Vulcan reserve. Ha! Ha! There are some wonderfully funny anecdotes in Shatner's book "Get A Life" about those days. Anyone who doesn't read it is underprivileged, deprived, and probably a total sap!

By the way, this anonymous guy in a red top just beamed into the basement here, and I shot him.

"He's dead, Jim!"

That's one down. Damned if I know who he was.

So you'll leave it to me to fill in the details, Clinton? Well, I'll try my best. Let's see now, it was so long ago...

We're both from the Sault, but I first met Clinton Hammond just a few miles outside of it. Well, above it, actually. On the Mother Ship. I had already finished on the treadmill after the same old forcefeeding of broccoli and 3 bean salad for the flatulance tests (I still hold the record, I understand) and the Greys had me on the table and were practicing making their scoop marks on my inner thighs.

That was when they brought Clinton in to the other table across the room. (Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that only about your 2nd or 3rd time round with the anal probes, Clint?)

Anyway, I think I was the one who spoke first... something like "makes ya thirsty, eh?" I think it was. He answered, "Damn thirsty, yeah!" So I suggested we go for a few beers when they were done with us and Clint agreed.

As per usual, we woke up in the buffalo pen at Bellevue Park. Those bastard Greys heard us talking about going to the pub later and they thought it'd be funny to have us wearing each other's clothes when we woke up. Yeah... REAL friggin' funny!

After we'd exchanged clothes back and walked to the pub and got our beers, I told him how much I'd hated the Greys. But Clinton said he didn't really blame them too much since they were only following orders. The ones he really hated were their leaders: those damn talking rocks that ran the show up there.

"Yeah, well someday I'm gonna settle up with `em all!" I said.

"You do that!" he told me. "Me, I'm gonna fuck off to Windsor some day. Let `em try and find me. They'll never expect that. NObody wants to go there."

That's about how I remember it, anyhow.

You're quite right that nobody wants to go to Windsor. I avoid the place like I would avoid a severe case of hemmerhoids, but it's still heaven compared to Detroit. I think that your chances of extraterrestrial visitations in Windsor are fairly limited (because they're more clued-in than most Earthlings), so it sounds to me like Clinton has made the right move. Besides, they're too busy keeping an eye on the idiots who are deploying nuclear weapons here and there to be bothered much about Windsor.
