There is a new Folk Club starting in Bude, Cornwall The first meeting is tonight at 8 p.m. at The Falcon Inn. All are welcome. The dates for future meets will be fortnightly but this will not be the case immediately, as the hotel has a couple of bookings to honour and the Festival of course, I will post a date list after tonights gathering and let you all know when the next few will be.
But if you are near these parts, look in tonight! I look forward to meeting some of you!

That's great, Lucy. There's been nothing in that area, as far as I'm aware, since the old Stratton club. Now, that was a good one!

We'll try to get down at some point, although it's a good hour and a half from us.

Well, it was with trepidation on our 18th wedding anniversary that KB and myself waited at the Falcon Inn in Bude to see if anyone would come! Oh us of little faith!
A fantastic evening of superb talent rewarded us! Huge thanks to the ideford Folk Club members who attended, what a talented lot you are, Tim The landlord joined us with his guitar, Mothy joined us - you have a lovely voice young man, We loved the unaccompanied song you sang! Towards the end of the evening a group of curious people from the bar came in, it was a real highlight! one of them was a young man from Sweden, he borrowed the landlords guitar and we all held our breath, WOW! I have NEVER seen fingers mive so fast on guitar strings, it was sad that several had left it was an amazing performance and one which I will long remember. The youngest person there was 11 and though shs didnt perform on her own, she did join in all the choruses - well done Izzy! The oldest was 78 and he played fast and furious on the melodeon! We had Music and song, traditional and contemporary, old and young. I am now really looking forward the the next one on May 13th - put it in your diaries! Why not stay on after Fox & Hounds and come along! We will be going from one to the other!
Thanks again all those of you who supported. We couldn't have done it without you!

A long shot but a question for all you "Budeites" - have you ever come across a chap called Geof (Godfrey) Walt in the Bude area - He used to run one of the biggest folk clubs in the NW back in the 80's and then emigrated to Bude to open a restaurant - lost contact with him - he'd be pushing 70 now!

Yes, he did used to run a restaurant in Bude, you are right, haven't hard anything of him in a while.

Thanks for that. Any idea which restaurant or where in Bude it was? He was an avid folk promotor and I assume that he ran concerts in ther area as he used to in S. Manchester.

Im not sure of the name, The Troubador comes to mind, but I cannot be certain! I dont think he has the restaurant now, He did do a little with folk down here, he had a hand in the last Bude Folk Festival in 1991. I'll ask around. and see if i can find anything out, it may take a couple of days, keep looking at the thread!

Thanks Lucy, no rush, I'd just like to find out what hapened to him. He had no background in the restaurant trade - he was previously a rep. for a ready mix concrete firm although his wife was a rally good cook.

Geoff ran several clubs in the 70's & 80's with all the ususal suspects performing (I remember a brief conversation with Jasper Carrott as we were leaving the stage and he was going on!) and therefore he had all the contacts. I ended up organising the sound for him at his last but one venture at the Deanwater in Woodford (Cheshire) - it was the only folk club I know of which had a video link to the bar area so you didn't miss anything.

Ray I used to live in Macclesfield! I used to go to Pynton club in my youth - 'cos they would serve me under age and i could dance with every bloke in the room at their ceilidhs! After a brief sabbatical with more modern music I came back to being a folkie when I met my other half and moved to Cornwall! small world eh!

Lucy, When exactly was your youth - if that's not a rude question? We were resident at the Poynton club for a brief period before falling out with the place and moving down to the Deanwater in 1974. Perhaps we may even have met.

My youth was when I was 16 / 17 and that was about 30 years ago!
My Mum & Dad still live in Gawsworth, are you atill around that area? You may be a good contact to see whats on when we come up to visit!

We now live up in the Derbyshire hills although not really that far from Poynton. Unfortunately, I haven't had much contact with the folk scene in recent years especially that on the Cheshire side; although we did run one of the singarounds at the Woodford festival over Easter. I suspect that you'd be likely to get more info from posting on this board.

The second meeting of The Bude Folk Club was held last night, Following wider advetisement, we only just had enough chairs this week! More new faces and great talent, Canberra Chris from The Shiny Bums came along and was stunning, what a lovely voice and such a nice person too! We are really blessed to be able to welcome them to Bude festival in 2 weeks time and I really do reccomend that you take the opportunity to see them if you can! (visit the festival website here:

We had a mix of all sorts last night, and a lot of people just came to listen too, It seems they were delighted that there is a Folk Club Back in Bude.
The next one should be in 2 weeks time but that is the festival, 2 weeks after that is 10th June - PUT IT IN YOUR DIARIES!!

The legacy of The Tree folk club is still there, in the form of a fortnightly session of regulars ("Three in the Bush and friends") playing broadly Irish stuff. At least a couple of us cut our performing teeth at the old folk club and are eternally grateful to John and Cheryl who ran the club brilliantly for so many years.   This Friday and fortnightly thereafter, so it will never clash with the Falcon folk club! :-)

So that gives you more to enjoy when you come to Bude - Tree on a Friday and Falcon on a Sunday!
Steve, One of the reasons the Club was put on the Sunday was so that it didn't clash with your session, so that you could join us if you wished - and there is really no point in having all the folky things on in the Bude area on the same night.
Yes, John and Cheryl ran a great club, which has been greatly missed.
They took it on from Larry MacLaughlin, who ran it for a time before John & Cheryl moved to Cornwall, A great legacy to follow! Hopefully We here in Bude can do it the justice it deserves and keep it going as long as they did! Breezy who posted here last night used to run a folk club in The Summerleaze Hotel before I was out of nappies!!!!! (I was a late developer!! LOL)

oombanjo, that looks like the 8th July that the club will be here, Sadly I will be on holiday that weekend, so the club will be in the tender care of one of our members, and I will miss out on getting to meet another mudcatter face to face! (Bugger!) Do still come and enjoy. There will be other 'catters there I am sure.

BB you are welcome to steal the thunder! Its great for people to know where in the westcountry they can partake of the great music and song this area has to offer! I am starting a Club mailing list and, as you requested, will make sure to let you know when things are happening here.

Thanks to Lucy, Kevin and all at the Bude folk club for a lovely warm welcome to myself as the scout for the Shiny Bum Singers, and for a chance to hear you as well as sing myself. The room has to be one of the most beautiful folk venues, with acoustics (and host) to match. I'm sorry I missed the earlier rounds of music, but after driving from Bristol the scenic way I had to eat first!

The people at The Tree in Stratton were also most helpful and friendly in showing me around - I left a book and CD with them for Lucy which I had forgotten to pass on at Bude. I even caught the tail-end of the departing Sealed Knot guests, and have been explaining to my Aussie friends that I just missed a Civil War battle and the chance to test my memory for period songs.

We will be coming from east Yorkshire "Beverley" and hitting the south coast in the banjomobile somewhere below south Wales, Then with a few stops down to St Ives.around the lizard and a few stops towards Plymouth and ending up in Brighton and the Lewes folc clud if it's still going.cheers Oombanjo.
