Subject: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Sarah the flute Date: 06 Feb 02 - 03:36 AM Does anyone know where you can buy a breton bombarde at a cheap price (preferably under £50) and also one that plays in a sensible key rather than Bb. Any ideas? |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST Date: 06 Feb 02 - 04:02 AM Hobgoblin Music" do a couple at £20 and £25 approx. Both are in Bb though, and having tried one, I can confirm that they're virtually unplayable. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST Date: 06 Feb 02 - 05:02 AM Bit above your price range but there's one here in C for £75 |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST Date: 06 Feb 02 - 05:05 AM The 'back home' link on that last page doesn't work. It should take you to the Early Music Shop |

Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 06 Feb 02 - 08:21 AM I remember hearing a piece for bombarde and church organ, recoreded at a Celtic festival (in Killarney?) many years ago. I reckon the bombarde won in a conter! Regards p.s. Conicidentally, I met a French guy last year who, having played piano and organ for many years, was now taking up the bombarde. The fact that HE wore earplugs when he played it, did not inspire confidence! |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST Date: 06 Feb 02 - 08:27 AM Auxiris and Martin Ryan, Your posts in no way help answer Sarah's question. In fact all they achieve is to try and put her off learning a new folk instrument. Is that what you want? If not, I'd suggest you keep you gob-shite to yourselves, and forget how wonderful hearing your own voice is. Thank you. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST,Pied piper Date: 06 Feb 02 - 08:45 AM The bomdards made in Pakistan and sold by Hobgoblin are usualy playable if the original reed is used but don't seem to want to play in the second octave.I have got one of these down to A using 3/4 sized bagpipe reeds from FCN, and tape over the holes to tune it. good luck |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST,Martin Ryan Date: 06 Feb 02 - 08:53 AM Calm down, Guest! I have enjoyed Breton bands hugely - in the right cirumstances, usually outdoors. Indoors, my preference is for something a little quieter. Sarah Good luck with your efforts. As someone who has never mastered an instrument, I am lost in admiration of those who do - whatever that instrument may be. Regards

Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Auxiris Date: 06 Feb 02 - 08:56 AM Hi again, Sarah. In addition, when I spoke of the bombarde earlier in terms of being an "instrument", I was being generous. . . it should really be classified as a weapon. Martin, you might be interested to know that the French musician you met isn't the only one who wears earplugs when he plays the bombarde. Apparently, this is common practice and for good reason! cheers, Aux |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Big Mick Date: 06 Feb 02 - 09:06 AM And Martin...........don't pay any attention to the asshole that made that comment. These folks post this load of shite because they don't have anything else to say. I would guess that Sarah, as well as the rest of us, took your comment in the spirit it was offered. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Sarah the flute Date: 06 Feb 02 - 10:23 AM I KNOW it's a weapon ha ha designed to drive off all other instruments!!! It's revenge for years of subtle flute playing. Actually in all seriousness I play an oboe and so reckoned a bombarde would be a good progression. The really mean thing is that ultimately I'm not looking for one but two as another member of the band thinks bombarde duets would sound good for the branles and bourees we play. Trouble is we don't want to play in Bb and I just wondered if you could get hold of the animals in D at a sensible price in case this experiment into French haute culture doesn't work Sarah |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Big Mick Date: 06 Feb 02 - 11:13 AM I checked www.elderly.com and they have one in C. But the cost is around US$150.00. Seems like a lot to pay for the privilege of blowing your eardrums out.........LOL. All the best, Mick |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: sledge Date: 06 Feb 02 - 11:48 AM I've not heard one of these instruments in use but given the response generated I was wondering:- Bombard, medieval gunpowder weapon of great (destructive)power. Bombarde, instrument that seems to evoke reactions similar to the above:0) Cheers Sledge

Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST,Martn Ryan Date: 06 Feb 02 - 12:00 PM In fact, Sarah, if I remember rightly, the reason my friend was taking up the bombarde was because it was as close as he could get to a medieval "shawm". I think he thought the oboe a bit refined! Regards |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Auxiris Date: 06 Feb 02 - 12:00 PM Geez, Sarah—in the interest of kindness, you could pass out pairs of earplugs at concerts, I guess :). Or maybe just warn people ahead of time! Duets? The prospect staggers the imagination. . . good luck to you and hope the band does well. cheers, Aux

Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Jon Freeman Date: 06 Feb 02 - 12:06 PM You don't know what you are missing sledge! They are LOUD and piercing - they would even frighten the Highland bagpipes away! That said, it is a wonderful instrument in the right setting. Jon |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST Date: 06 Feb 02 - 12:08 PM Sarah, so now you tell me that you want one in D. You could have said that in your first post. A thanks to those who had bothered to try and help you might have been nice too. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 06 Feb 02 - 12:17 PM A friend of mine got one for Christmas. Not sure of the key, I just remember the price was over 300, there again those are Canadian Dollars. At a dollar per decibel exchange rate he did get it at a good price though :) JohnB |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Micca Date: 06 Feb 02 - 12:41 PM Sarah, they play these in Catalonia too, dont know what key, if Manitas or Liz get on here they could tell you, they are called Graillers (prounounced Gri ars) there. They had a band of 12 in a procession we were in, with our Giant,in Catalonia and I could not get my friend to understand instructions tho' I was yelling at the top of my voice( and I am LOUD)from a foot away, they produced temporary deafness.. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Manitas_at_home Date: 06 Feb 02 - 01:58 PM Sarah, Micca is right I do have a grailla which is pitched in G and just as loud as the bombarde. I also have a bombarde in high D but they are very hard to play (perhaps not if you ar an oboeist). If you looking to play historical music as well have you considered a musette? They come in D (low) and are similar to an oboe. I think they can be played with or without windcaps and blend in with other instruments more easily. I think bombardes are great but they are really outdoor instruments and sound best (IMO)in pairs (kan han diskan?)or in bands (bagads). Another possibility is to look outside European culture. There are Indian instruments which are similar so you could try Jas Musicals (I think) in West London and who have a website. I once bought a Chinese shawm from Ray Man's. He has a shop in Chalk Farm Road and used to have one in Covent Garden. I don't know if he has a website. Chinese shawms come in several sizes. You may have to mess about with the tunings on the Indian and Chinese instruments but they are probably far the cheaper option. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 06 Feb 02 - 03:15 PM Sledge, I looked it up too, not being familiar with it. Definition from my dictionary: a late medieval cannon used to hurl large stones. Not defined as a musical instrument. I have several cds with musettes as one of the instruments; they blend well. Can someone recommend a cd with a bombarde in full flight? (Where do these gu-p-ests come from? Someone has turned over a rock) |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: MartinRyan Date: 06 Feb 02 - 03:23 PM That reminds me! I have a CD somewhere of "grallers" accompanying the construction of human pyramids (or, rather, castles) in Sitges, in Catalonia. Must dig it out... Regards |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Gillie Date: 06 Feb 02 - 05:10 PM You really want a bombarde??? |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: E.T. Date: 06 Feb 02 - 10:36 PM If you're reconsidering a bombarde how about a rackett? I have a friend who built one - just a steady hand with a drill and a bit of time - you have to fit about 12' of space into a 1' chunk of wood. Now there's a challenge! I took the easy instrument and just made a tabor. Sounds rather wonderful, a good, deep furry vibration. Elaine.

Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Sarah the flute Date: 07 Feb 02 - 03:46 AM Thanks to EVERYONE including mystery GUEST for all your help. I've now learnt a lot more about the possibilities of pseudo bombardes as well. The Spanish things sound a good alternative in particular - can you buy them from anywhere? Manitas we were thinking along the lines of using them in Kan har diskan with maybe just a drum beat behind but then we thought it might be good to add in other instruments half way along and therefore easier in a key other than Bb. The C looks a possibility but they seem to be dearer than the Bb. Might saunter down to Hobgoblin shop and have a go if they'll let me. I am mortified by GUESTs comments and hope everyone doesnt think I,m being offensive. I really am very grateful for all your ideas. It doesn't have to be in D it would be OK in any other key too but Bb is not best for the others in the band. THANKS THANKS THANKS x 100000000000000000000etc Sarah |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: JeZeBeL Date: 07 Feb 02 - 06:57 AM Sarah, what band are you in. cos I know a couple of sarah's who want bonbardes and one sophy Ball aswell. Mrs Duck may be a good person to contact as she has a bombarde that they purchased in france. I will be over there in august if that's any help. Anyway, what's wrong with Bb???? I'm a trumpet player at heart and have played in Bb for 11 years!! Although I've only just picked it up again after 2 years!! If it's sarah from Ola, I'll see you at the maltings some time soon. If it's ickle sarah hayes I'll see you at some festivals over the summer hun. TTFN Emma Kitchen xxxxxxxxx |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Snuffy Date: 07 Feb 02 - 08:59 AM The Duck's bombarde is in the unwanted Bb, Jez. But I'm sure you'd all be delighted if they sold it! WassaiL! V |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Ned Ludd Date: 07 Feb 02 - 02:14 PM Manitas is quite right a grallia is a good alternative. As far as I know they are only available in Spain. There is a great Music shop on the Ramblas in Barcelona that would deal by mail though.I no longer have its address but someone else might be able to help. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: JohnInKansas Date: 07 Feb 02 - 02:26 PM A short clip, in .wav or .ra at bombarde. The page is in French, but the clickies are easy to find. Sounds like an oboe with a bad reed to me, but then it's only a short sample. John |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: RichM Date: 07 Feb 02 - 04:43 PM Jayzus Lass, find someone who owns one and do him/her a big favour: steal it! In any case I hope my wife (Suetheflute) never hears of such a device; myself and all the cats would be sufferin'... Rich |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Bert Date: 08 Feb 02 - 02:08 AM You might try Lark in the Morning. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Sarah the flute Date: 08 Feb 02 - 03:43 AM JeZeBel - yet another Sarah with bombarde aspirations I,m afraid. Part of The Flying Chaucers - wot can be found on a website that I can never remember the name of www.folkicons I think. Sarah |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 08 Feb 02 - 12:18 PM Has the bombarde been recorded? Or is the sound too much for recording studios? |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: GUEST,JohnB Date: 08 Feb 02 - 12:25 PM Apparently in Breton, the Bombarde is always accompanied by the Binieou (sp?) which is a single drone bagpipe pitched one octave above the bombarde. ANYONE GOT ANY EARPLUGS? JohnB. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Auxiris Date: 11 Feb 02 - 02:51 AM Hi, John; it's spelt "biniou" and are either large (braz) or small (koz). The small ones are nearly as horrible as bombardes. . . ! Hi, Dicho; yes, unfortunately the bombarde has been recorded (many Breton bands use them), but I don't have a clue how they managed to do it without ruining good sound equipment cheers, Aux

Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Sarah the flute Date: 11 Feb 02 - 03:32 AM You are so cruel Aux, they have a LOVELY sound just listen to those Breton bands in tiny village festivals all over North West France .... ah happy memories.... ah happy holidays..... EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!! Oh listen it's a lovely Bombarde. Actually I havn't bought it YET but look out South London... Coming soon to a place near you. |
Subject: RE: Where can I buy a bombarde? From: Auxiris Date: 11 Feb 02 - 09:02 AM Moi?? Cruel? Naaaawwwwwww. . . just don't want to go deaf, Sarah (grin). You see, the trouble is, all those Breton bands don't stay in Brittany; they've also invaded other parts of the country and now we can't get away from them. Think I'll have to fight back: get the banjo out more often! At any rate, good luck with your search! cheers, Aux
