Subject: RE: song to my daughter From: Amos Date: 18 May 03 - 12:54 AM You could recite "Prayer for my Daughter " (by WB Yeats) without fear of contradiction, I am sure. Once more the storm is howing, and half hid Under this cradle hood and cover lid My child sleeps on.... at which point memory staggers and reels. A |

Subject: Lyr Add: A PRAYER FOR MY DAUGHTER (W B Yeats) From: GUEST,Clint Keller Date: 18 May 03 - 02:20 AM Here y'are A PRAYER FOR MY DAUGHTER William Butler Yeats Once more the storm is howling, and half hid Under this cradle-hood and coverlid My child sleeps on. There is no obstacle But Gregory's wood and one bare hill Whereby the haystack- and roof-levelling wind, Bred on the Atlantic, can be stayed; And for an hour I have walked and prayed Because of the great gloom that is in my mind. I have walked and prayed for this young child an hour And heard the sea-wind scream upon the tower, And under the arches of the bridge, and scream In the elms above the flooded stream; Imagining in excited reverie That the future years had come, Dancing to a frenzied drum, Out of the murderous innocence of the sea. May she be granted beauty and yet not Beauty to make a stranger's eye distraught, Or hers before a looking-glass, for such, Being made beautiful overmuch, Consider beauty a sufficient end, Lose natural kindness and maybe The heart-revealing intimacy That chooses right, and never find a friend. Helen being chosen found life flat and dull And later had much trouble from a fool, While that great Queen, that rose out of the spray, Being fatherless could have her way Yet chose a bandy-leggèd smith for man. It's certain that fine women eat A crazy salad with their meat Whereby the Horn of Plenty is undone. In courtesy I'd have her chiefly learned; Hearts are not had as a gift but hearts are earned By those that are not entirely beautiful; Yet many, that have played the fool For beauty's very self, has charm made wise, And many a poor man that has roved, Loved and thought himself beloved, From a glad kindness cannot take his eyes. May she become a flourishing hidden tree That all her thoughts may like the linnet be, And have no business but dispensing round Their magnanimities of sound, Nor but in merriment begin a chase, Nor but in merriment a quarrel. O may she live like some green laurel Rooted in one dear perpetual place. My mind, because the minds that I have loved, The sort of beauty that I have approved, Prosper but little, has dried up of late, Yet knows that to be choked with hate May well be of all evil chances chief. If there's no hatred in a mind Assault and battery of the wind Can never tear the linnet from the leaf. An intellectual hatred is the worst, So let her think opinions are accursed. Have I not seen the loveliest woman born Out of the mouth of Plenty's horn, Because of her opinionated mind Barter that horn and every good By quiet natures understood For an old bellows full of angry wind? Considering that, all hatred driven hence, The soul recovers radical innocence And learns at last that it is self-delighting, Self-appeasing, self-affrighting, And that its own sweet will is Heaven's will; She can, though every face should scowl And every windy quarter howl Or every bellows burst, be happy still. And may her bridegroom bring her to a house Where all's accustomed, ceremonious; For arrogance and hatred are the wares Peddled in the thoroughfares. How but in custom and in ceremony Are innocence and beauty born? Ceremony's a name for the rich horn, And custom for the spreading laurel tree. clint |

Subject: Lyr Add: SONG FOR JESSIE (Sharon Fountain) From: Sooz Date: 18 May 03 - 09:57 AM SONG FOR JESSIE by Sharon Fountain is lovely: With your grown up garb and your page bobbed hair You're looking like a woman and it scares me Think how the years are slipping away I'll sing you a song to commemorate the day You began to look like a woman to me Out of the child it is plain to see All the things that you might possibly fear In the future not far from the now and here You are the battle I almost fought You are the poem I almost wrote You are the war I've almost won Now you're a song I've almost sung When you're young the world is a fine old place Protective arms and friendly faces Kill the dragons shoo the gremlins away Try to give you a better day But the time is coming thick and fast When you will stand alone at last And the dragons will bang on your own back door And the gremins'll come back drooling for more. So don't you come to me with a band upon your finger Complaining I never warned you of this Beware of the monsters and gremlins and dragons Hidden behind a young man's kiss But for now you're a vision of beauty and faith In all things wonderful and safe And I kick myself for thinking this way Surely tomorrow hides a better day Because you're young you're strong you're an open page Not wrestling dragons of a bygone age And you fight with your mouth and not with your fists And you'll not be fooled by a young man's kiss |

Subject: RE: song to my daughter From: George Seto - af221@chebucto.ns.ca Date: 19 May 03 - 10:07 AM To A Sleeping Beauty Dear Daughter, I tiptoed in your room tonight and I looked down at you smiling in your sleep. You were so lovely my heart nearly broke; and I thought how much like Sleeping Beauty a little girl is. When I tuck you in at night I never know how old you'll be when you wake. One evening you crawl on your dad's lap and throw your arms around his neck, the next morning you might be much too grown up for that sort of thing. You're so quickly approaching the awkward age, too young to drive the car and yet too old to be carried in the house half asleep on daddy's shoulder. I have a secret that I've never told you, Sleeping Beauty, you're going on a very exciting trip. You'll travel from yesterday all the way to tomorrow. It's a rapid journey and you'll travel light, leaving behind you - measles, mumps, freckles, bumps, bubble gum and me. I promise not to feel too hurt when you discover that the world is more important than your daddy's lap. Yesterday you were blue jeans and pig tails, the neighborhood's best tree climber. Tomorrow you'll have pony tails and you'll view the world from a loftier perch - a pair of high heel shoes. Yesterday you could mend a doll's broken leg with a hug; tomorrow you'll be able to break a young man's heart with a kiss. Humh! Humh! Yesterday you could get lost one aisle away from me at a supermarket - now I have to worry about losing you down another aisle to some strange young man. You see, just at the point where your growing pains stop, mine begins. Yesterday you were kind of a pain in the neck when you were around, tomorrow you'll be an ache in my heart when you're not. Tomorrow you'll lay aside your jump rope and tie up the telephone lines and that little boy that used to push you in the mud; well, he'll fight to sit out a dance with you. The clock is counting the minutes for you and the sky upstairs is saving its brightest stars; and the sun is waiting with its shiniest day. Oh I, I can't expect you to live in a doll house forever. Sooner or later, the butterfly sheds its cocoon and the smallest bird must try its wings. But when you grow up and out of my arms; when you finally get too big for my shirts, I'll still recall how you used to scatter dust and dolls through every room in the house; but you spread sunshine too. The dust is settled, your mom picked up the dolls; but the sunshine will always fill the corners of our hearts. So, here I am talking in your sleep, because, well if you saw this look on my face, you'd laugh and if I spoke with this lump in my throat, I'd cry. Yea! Honey, when I looked at you tonight you were a Sleeping Beauty. So, I tip-toed over and I kissed you - you didn't wake up, I knew you wouldn't. According to the legend only the handsome young prince can open your eyes and I'm just the father of the future bride. So you sleep on pretty thing, tomorrow you'll wake and you'll be a young lady and you won't even realize that you've changed courses in the middle of a dream. But you might notice a little change in me; I'll look a little different somehow. A little sadder, a little wiser, but a whole lot richer. Tonight, I kissed a princess and I feel like a king. Subject: ADD: Charlie Is a Funny Kid From: Raggytash Date: 19 May 03 - 10:13 AM You will have to change the gender but I used to sing for my son Charlie is a funny kid or so the neighbours say you will never find him where the other children for Charlei is a solitary kind of little boy and the flowers are his play things and the earth his only toy. By the flickering television stands an empty chair there's an all star show tonight but Charlie doesn't care for in the misty meadow were the moon beams glow Charlies watching the flowers grow. I'm at work at the moment and theres two more verses If you want the rest let me know |

Subject: Lyr Add: CHARLIE IN THE MEADOW (John Conolly) From: Sooz Date: 20 May 03 - 02:55 PM CHARLIE IN THE MEADOW John Conolly "Charlie is a funny kid" you'll hear the neighbours say And you will never find him where the other children play For Charlie is a solitary kind of little boy The flowers are his playmates and the Earth his only toy By the flickering television stands a vacant chair There's an all star show tonight but Charlie doesn't care In the misty meadow where the daisies blow Charlie is watching the flowers grow Charlie watches life go by and dreams a sunny dream Of field mice in the meadow and tadpoles in the stream He listens for the cuckoos chime and hears the blackbird's song And Charlie has a feeling that they won't be with us long By the flickering television stands a vacant chair There's an all star show tonight but Charlie doesn't care In the misty meadow by the moonlights glow Charlie is watching the flowers grow Charlie's kingdom vanishes a little every day The countryside is shrinking and the mice have moved away Trees and flowers disappear before the hand of man And Charlie wants to see them all and touch them while he can By the flickering television stands a vacant chair There's an all star show tonight but Charlie doesn't care In the misty meadow where the stars hang low Charlie is watching the flowers grow |

Subject: RE: song to my daughter From: Abuwood Date: 22 May 03 - 03:39 AM I like this one by Small Everything Possible by Small We've cleared up the table leftover saved Washed the dishes and put them away I've told you a story, tucked you in tight At the end of your knockabout day As the moon sets her sails to carry you to sleep Over the midnight sea I will sing you a song no- one sang to me may it keep you good company You can be anybody you want to be you can love whoever you will You can travel any county that your heart leads and know that I will love you still You can live by yourself you can gather friends around You can choose one special one But the only measure of your words and your deeds will be the love you leave behind when you're done There's are girls who grow up strong and bold There are boys quiet and kind Some race on ahead some follow behind some go in their own way and time Some women love women some men love love men Some raise children some never do You can dream all the days never reaching the end Of everything that's possible for you. CHORUS Don't be rattled by names, by taunts by games but seek out spirits true If you give your friends the best part of yourself They'll give the same back to you CHORUS If you need a tape or CD PM me. |

Subject: RE: song to my daughter From: Alaska Mike Date: 01 Oct 03 - 10:30 AM Here's one I wrote for my daughter, when she graduated high school and was getting ready to go off to college. I Hate To See You Go Oh the leaves they are a turning and the weather's getting cold, There was ice upon the car window today. And the radio reported that the rain might turn to snow, And the geese are heading southward on their way. Oh, I think about this summer and all the fun we had, Playing music at the festivals and shows. And though I know its time for you to get out on your own, Tracy, I sure hate to see you go. When you were just a baby and I held you in my arms, I marveled at the way your brown hair curled. You would grab my finger with your tiny, little hand, And I was the proudest daddy in the world. It seems like only yesterday when you were just a girl, And there were so many things you didn't know. And now you're off to college and I am prouder still, But Tracy, I sure hate to see you go. But go, and see what you must see, And so, become the woman you must be. Like a little sparrow when it finally learns to fly, The time has come to leave the nest so warm. But you know your always welcome back whenever you decide, Just to visit or to shelter from the storm. So whenever you are happy, or feeling sad and blue, Or when the northern winds begin to blow. Just call me on the telephone and let me hear from you, Cause Tracy, I sure hate to see you go. Oh Tracy, I sure hate to see you go. |

Subject: RE: song to my daughter From: Andrez Date: 16 Nov 16 - 04:53 AM Every now and then I ask myself 'whats the point of me at all'? At times like this I think about my daughter who is blossoming into the special person we always knew she was and I stop that silly line of thinking and just get on with things knowing that by hook or by crook I managed to avoid repeating some of the most painful experiences of my own childhood parenting and still become a half decent dad and knowing that in a relatively few years I'll probably have the joy of a grandchild or even two and the agony and the ecstasy of watching life repeat itself all over again until my time in the cycle comes to a timely end. I'd love to hear if there are any new 'songs' or poems out there loving or honouring our children out there since this thread last appeared. Cheers, Andrez |

Subject: RE: song to my daughter From: GUEST,DTM Date: 16 Nov 16 - 03:08 PM I got this from the internet... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLyGae5mYoo LETTING GO Written by Leslie Bricusse, Frank N. Wildhorn • She'll take the painting in the hallway, The one she did in jr. high And that old lamp up in the attic, She'll need some light to study by. She's had 18 years to get ready for this day She should be past the tears, she cries some anyway Oh oh letting go There's nothing in the way now, Oh letting go, there's room enough to fly And even though, she's spent her whole life waiting, It's never easy letting go. Mother sits down at the table So many things she'd like to do Spend more time out in the garden Now she can get those books read too. She's had 18 years to get ready for this day She should be past the tears, she cries some anyway. Oh oh letting go There's nothing in the way now, Oh letting go, there's room enough to fly And even though, she's spent her whole life waiting, It's never easy letting go. Oh oh letting go There's nothing in the way now, Oh letting go, there's room enough to fly And even though, she's spent her whole life waiting, It's never easy letting go. |
Subject: RE: song to my daughter From: Andrez Date: 16 Nov 16 - 04:17 PM Thank you so much DTM, that pretty much hits the nail on the head. My daughter is a couple of years older and will finish postgrad Uni in a couple of years but the signs of change are there as she gets out and starts creating her own life, one that naturally wont include much of us at least for a few years…… we'll miss her every day even as we go about our 'new' child free lives…. that makes the time we have left even more special! Cheers, Andrez |

My grandfather used to sing this to me, a long time ago and I've been searching for the words to this for a long time - if you still know them, would you be able to send them across?
