Phyllis Kinney (July 4, 1922 – June 29, 2026) has just passed away at the age of 103. She was an American-born singer, collector and historian who was a leading authority on Welsh folk music. She studied at the Juilliard School and was a soprano with the Carl Rosa Opera Company during the 1940s. After meeting her husband Meredydd Evans, traditional singer, collector and author, Kinney immersed herself in the culture of Wales. Through her writing, research and performances, Kinney helped to preserve and promote traditional music of Wales. The archives of Kinney and Evans are now part of the Welsh Music Archive at the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth.
I drove up to the county of Ceredigion years ago, and I interviewed Mered and Phyllis at their cottage in the village of Cwmystwyth. They were so friendly and charming; if fact, Phyllis cooked lunch for me!

Phyllis cooked for you??? She always said she was NO domestic goddess! But when you've given the world the book, "Welsh Traditional Music", you don't have to be.

I managed to visit her in January. I am going to miss her terribly.

sian, west wales (once upon a time)

I have added Phyllis to the "In Memoriam" thread. A very accomplished singer in the Welsh language she was 103 when she died. A great expert on the history of Welsh folk song. It is worth looking her up on the Internet. RIP Phyllis
