Im looking for the lyrics to a song I used to hear when I was a young lad sitting on the stairs listening to parties that my parents used to throw.I have a live version of the song sung by the Wolfetones but I cannot make out all of the words. If anyone can help me it will end a long time of frustration.

here is one version, not necessarily the one you look for but it might nevertheless help in making out the rest of the words.

HIGHLAND PADDY

1. One evening fair as the sun was shining
to Kilkenny I did ride,
I did meet with Captain Brady
a tall commander by his side.

Ch: Then you are welcome, Highland Paddy,
by my side you'll surely stand,
hear the people shout for freedom
we'll rise in the morning with the Fenian band, rise in the morning with the Fenian band.

2. In the morning we rose early
just before the break of dawn
blackbirds singing in the bushes
greetings to a smiling morn.
Gather round me men of Ireland
gather Fenians gather round
hand to hand with sword and musket
spill the blood upon this holy ground. Ch

3. There's a glen beside the river
just outside Kilkenny town
there we met this noble captain
men lay dead upon the ground. Ch

4. There's a grave beside the river
a mile outside Kilkenny town
there we laid our noble captain
birds were silent when this Fenian died.
All my life I will remember
I'll remember night and day
that once I rode into Kilkenny
and I heard this noble captain say: Ch

This version from Sodlums "100 Irish ballads Vol 2" differs from the Fureys version I have heard. I miss bits like "I saw the captain sorely bleeding" but I hope this version is close to the one you are looking for.

Enjoy it Wolfgang
